  • This video is in the Re-Engineering the Chess Classics series! To celebrate the publication of my new book (written together with my childhood coach Steve Giddins) I am examining a series of classic games - just as we did in the book - using the creative engine analysis techniques I described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" At the same time, I get to indulge my current obsessions for a couple of classic players ;) and this time the lucky "victim" is the great Swedish player Gideon Stahlberg. I've been inspired by the wonderful book "Gideon Stahlberg An Epoch in Swedish Chess - Volume 1 The Musketeer Years 1908-1939" by Peter Holmgren (Verendel Publishing) which has led me along all sorts of wonderful paths related to the Swedish chess scene of that era. This lovely attacking game against the Swiss player Oskar Naegeli has lots of additional and beautiful tactical points revealed only by the engines!
I’m grandmaster Matthew Sadler, a 2-times British Champion, and ranked in the world’s top 50 for many years. I’m also a prolific author. My latest book "Re-Engineering the Chess Classics" appeared in May 2023. It uses the techniques described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" to analyse afresh thirty-five of the most fascinating and complex chess games ever played by World Champions and other top grandmasters.

"The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" - which came out in October 2021 is, just like this channel, all about learning from and training with engines.

The award-winning Game Changer - written together with Natasha Regan - brought the amazing chess games of DeepMind’s AlphaZero to the world. I'm really enjoying your analysis Mathew, great game! Will you be playing in the Bury Congress this year?

Thanks James! No not planning to play Bury this year - work is going to be really busy until November for various reasons! But hoping to start playing the odd game next year maybe! Best Wishes, Matthew

    Lovely game!
An anecdote: I was told by Argentinian players that Stahlberg wrote his book on the queen's gambit completely by heart. Just pen and paper. No board, books or archives. Not even a typewriter.
Of course, engines were still not available back then! 😂😂
