What Was It About “Killing In The Name”?!

- A radio station in Vancouver, Canada is, for some unknown reason, playing Rage Against The Machine's "Killing in the Name" on repeat and they won't stop! It's driving people crazy, but is that really such a bad thing? It's a classic rock hit that provides us with such incredible riffs, not the worst song to be on repeat. Let's have a look at this track and talk about why it was so popular amongst us rock and music enthusiasts! Are you fan? If so, why? If not...why?!

Was Jim Morrison assassinateby the CIA? ‘I don’t know and I don’t know why you think I do.’ Just perfect!
As one of your patrons. I enjoyed learning about whammy pedal. Was fascinating. I find your analysis interesting. However have never been fan of this band. You can't rage against the machine when you are part of it.in their youth it may have been protest but after. They are corporate band now. Based off statements . It's just my opinion. Never found them as appealing. More radio filler ...just my thought, opinion. Dont anyone get knickers in a knot. Opinions. Everyone has them. Neither right or wrong. Love to all. I would really love a or some pink Floyd analysis. I havent seen you cover their work yet. It would be quite interesting. See you in the chats sir! 😉😄
Someone at Netflix is a fan … check out this blurb they wrote for Stranger Things:
“DARKNESS returns to HAWKINS JUST IN time for spring break, igniting fresh terror, disturbing memories - and an ominous new threat.”
Whaddya think about that Iggy Pops Justin?
Your guitar pick giving you a “f*ck you, I won’t do what you tell me” at the end there.
Ha! Brilliant.. 🤣
It was a moment of poetry when that song kept Simon Cowell’s dross of the Christmas number 1 in the UK. Another very fine 10 mins of life thanks
I remember that. Never been so proud of the British public
Only thing about that is Simon cowell’s Syco records is owned by Sony and rages’ epic label is also owned by Sony. It may feel good to stick it to cowell but buying killing in the name was actually great business for him.
There's something quite cathartic about watching someone else try to shake a pick out of a guitar
Reminds us of our humanity.
Only way....shake it like an infant
Love how there was a second pick in there lol
ONE OF US!! ONE OF US!!
I concur
I love that you left the bit in with the pick getting stuck in the guitar! Hundreds of thousands of guitarists all over the world can relate!
LOL!.... I've never ever EVER done that over a thousand times in my guitar playing life.
So true. Happened to me a few times too
My instinct was to grab the guitar and give it a few shakes myself
@@tulleybrownpresnell7508 Maybe your technique is all wrong!
@sean mckinnon Definitely happens the more "laid back" one is feeling!!
The best part about RATM has got to be Zach’s absolute fury on the vocals. The lyrical themes and unapologetic anger directed at those who marginalize and oppress others being shouted against the backdrop of a groovy, hard-hitting rhythm section and an absolute monster of a guitar churning out memorable riffs is what makes them one of my personal favorite bands. Their messages are still relevant to this day too, if not more than ever.
theres no such thing as a best part of the music, try to listen to the vocals without the backing
Lol, relevant? They're Champaign socialists!

I love Rage. "You can hear the zeros and ones coming out of it" is the perfect phrase to describe the sound of that solo. It made me smile so much I commented. Well done Jussy.
Justin, I think you know we all love moments like the 'pick out of the guitar'.....
That would be a great Spinal Tap type thing to do at a show. Spend twenty minutes trying to get the pick out of a guitar.
I know nothing about playing guitars but I am totally engrossed by all Justin' s videos. Thank goodness for intelligent reviews and conversation. I am a new fan. Best videos on You Tube by far. Love him.
I agree 101% Very entertaining indeed.
Playing guitar is a very small part of Justin’s videos lol. I guess sometimes he talks about theory
Smashing stuff altogether!
Thanks Vicky!
Yes! Would love a whole segment on the whammy pedal and everything regarding gear really! Said it many times, love your reviews of songs, but it's the musical knowledge that I like! I learn something about gear and process every time n I love that about your channel!
I concur!
I second that concurrence.
I'd happily watch a video entirely consisting of Justin trying to get that blessed plectrum out. That's the kind of content we're here for.
I love how Justin can simultaneously offer commentary and information for musicians and non-musicians alike. Something for everyone in such a lovely way. THANK YOU! Great channel.
Best part was dropping your pic inside the acoustic 🤣. Even Rockstars look ridiculous trying to shake those bad boys out 😆!!
The ending to this video made me so terribly happy. No matter of experience can stop that.
I am once again here to comment on Andy Wallace's amazing mix on this record. A real punch in the face, just what it needed to be.
The “I’ve got a bullet in my head” comment at the end had me rolling. Reminded me of some of the humor in the old Beatles movies. Then followed up with trying to shake the pick out of the guitar! Comedy gold 🤌
Mr. Hawkins, I always love the dry humor and upbeat attitude you express in these videos. The losing the pick in the guitar was classic. And yes, it indeed can be frustrating. Although obviously unplanned, it really added to the fun aspect of this video. Peace.
Dimebag made great use of the Digitech Whammy. It would be nice to hear you discuss some of his stuff.
Absolutely!
Love the plectrum recovery attempt! I want to see that acoustic interlude.
Glad JHRA stumbled into my life. He is so engaging and just manic enough but then wait here is a music theory lesson. Bloody brilliant content.
I died when the pick went flying but the guitar was still shaking 🤣 “ it’s going to be in there forever” JH you’re awesome
I love that he wrote most of his riffs on Nylon string guitar..
And then hearing what his pedals would do in his mind
YES, MAKE A WHAMMY PEDDLE VIDEO!!! Doing an occasional Justin Hawkins examination of game changing pedals, who used them, and how they used them would be FAB-O!
Thank you Justin for showing us all that there is no shortcut to getting a pick out of a guitar. Excellent video as always
Finally found something I'm better at than Justin on guitar. Getting the plectrum out of the guitar is one of my specialities. Only takes me a couple of shakes.
Yeah but getting the inside of your guitar clean after you've emptied a couple of shakes into it. Nightmare
Love how this went from a Killing in the Name breakdown into a guitar pick rescue fail 😂
Great channel Justin !
Thank you for educating those of us who don't play guitar. Just one of the many reasons I love your channel!
What he's on about goes way over my head most times, but this one was really enlightening, especially for music lovers who knows almost nothing about it, but love to get a fun little glimpse under the hood.
Holy crap, I couldn't stop laughing when you were trying to get the pick out and said you wanted to do a concert just shaking the guitar. Genius.
Would love to see content on pedals, other tech involved in the music process. Happy fishing that plectrum out of the acoustic! 😂
I remember watching a gear video where Justin says he doesn’t use any pedals. His brother does though.
I love how much you give credit to those you discuss of.
As a former singer of a band. I really appreciate your videos going into the music on a explanatory level
Love watching you show so much knowledge. Love reading a few comments, entertaining too! 🙂😂
Drop D, some special guitar riffs and the whammy pedal.
The best bit was when you thought the pick had fallen out, but it hadn't! Confusing, funny and sad at the same time. 🤗
Yes do some rundowns of iconic gear 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I for one have been waiting for this reunion and cannot wait to see it go down live! Thanks for covering this one 😁
To this day the energy of kitno is unreal. Combine that with a sold out venue singing the lyrics like a prayer.y Goosebumps galore!
First and foremost!! Thumbs up just for dropping that D 💪🏽🎸🤘🏼😎 you did it J Hawk!! We know ya love your E!! Good on ya mate 👍🏼
Loved today's show! Loved the summertime outfit and the guitar pick bit made me laugh so much. Just genius. I do the music programming for a university radio station, here in Australia and have shared this article with the students - in an effort to instill some old people '90's outrage. It probably won't, but such a great article, thanks so much! Viva La Radio Revolution! PS: Tom Morello is just the best!
yes please do a video on the whammy pedal! i've owned a few, being influenced heavily by both ratm and radiohead. my current (new) guitar is an ed o'brien strat and i'm really interested to hear what it'll sound like through the whammy - with the built in harmonics, to boot! will have to find a place for the whammy on the album i'm making.
Hehehe! Such a good vid. Quality Matt Berry moments, great break down of a classic song and solo... yes please to the digit tech whammy pedal break down... and thanks for the pick loss laughs. Um... diabolo note?
Morello has said in interviews that that riff was written during a guitar lesson he was giving teaching the wonders of drop D tuning. Some lucky kid, Now an adult was there when it happened, he even used the kids tape player to make a quick recording. Who is that kid, where is he now?
he wears brown trousers and takes a slap from his wife after work before cry wanking in bed.
None other than Matt Bellamy himself
@@Ghost-lo9ei lol
That would make sense seeing as Matt has been another’s very inventive guitar player lol
09:35 :) that toast of london voice hahaha
I'd like to see some episodes where you bring out an electric guitar and amp, Justin! Love your channel!
As somebody mostly into old school hip-hop (Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys etc) RATM were one of the first rock/metal bands I could get into. Zach De La Rocha is a terrific lyricist and Tom Morello makes sounds with the guitar that you'd never think were possible. I was able to get into alternative and even in the infamous genre of nu metal. I like when different sounds from a variety of genres are fused effectively hence why I could get into likes of Deftones, Linkin Park, Korn, System of a Down etc.
Came for the commentary, stayed for the plectrum retrieval.
Justin you legend. Your Witt and and immense guitar skillary really makes my day. Also has bridged me to your band The Darkness 🤟 in the words of your fellow countryman Russell brand "I Love you man"! Cheers from Aus
👍👍👍👍👍
I have a drop D play list to play along with the guitar and I got "Killing in the name" before "growing on me". Some ot the most fun songs to play.
OMFG…watching you shake the pick (plectrum…British) out of your acoustic…this is so real! You aren’t a god after all, but a real man. Thank you! You are awesome! Fuck, I love you, but in a purely platonic way. You made my day.
Never thought one day I would be getting Music/Guitar lessons from you through UA-cam! You are hilarious by the way. Great channel
I’m definitely interested in an episode on the whammy pedal / pitch shifter , I’d absolutely be intrigued as fairly new guitar player. Love your channel Justin !
You are sooo funny. Plectrum in the sound hole! 😂 what I do, is position the plectrum just beneath the hole, then a quick flip. If your lucky (and rehearsed), it’ll drop right through. 🤞
10:00 the struggle is real 😂
Fun watch. Yes to hearing your thoughts on the DigiTech. Love your music AND your channel.
Not sure if that offer still stays, but please do an episode on Whammy!
By the way. this channel is addicting. I love talking about music but sadly have no one to talk to about it in such details. Listening to you talking so passionately (and knowledgably) about music makes up for that!
I've been huge fan of The Darkness when you first emerged to the world! "Love is only a feeling" would definitely by on my playlist if I were to be stuck on desert island with only few songs to listen!
and after hearing your vocals @3:36, The Darkness NEEDS to cover this song live. PLEASE!!!!
It's one of the few songs that I can remember exactly where I was when I first heard it. A real turning point.
yeah can you please make a full episode on the whammy pedal!🤙Your a badass love that your doing this channel, very entertaining/informative!
Excellent Toast impression 👍 Keep up the good work 👍
I've never been a huge fan of the band in general. But, the one thing that I liked about this song was the guitar riffs. I've played this style of riff since I started playing at 9 years old, influenced by Extreme, Electric Boys, Joe Satriani, all of those riff-heavy guitarists. And this *almost* fell into that same category of guitar, style-wise.
Whammy pedal episode would be FANTASTIC!!! :D
That whole thing with the pick at the end had me dying 🤣. This guy is great. Admittedly, I never listened to much of The Darkness besides what was on the radio but this youtube channel? Top notch lol
Genuine lol moment at the end. Great work!
" I got a f**king bullet in my head" - very hilarious ending :) Justin Hawkins Camps Again!! You should be in a movie. Please, somebody, cast this guy. Cheers mate!!
The pick in the guitar 🎸 part was hilarious 🤣.
I used to listen to this song on my way to work, to get pumped up for the day.
Thxs again Sir Justin much appericated
Proving not only a better songwriter, voice and guitarist. Love the man (stylish and starlike) but not the lesson. Love from VanHallenville CA.
Marvellous Justin. Font of knowledge. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻
I still find it so incredible that Morello's riffs, and what became his signature sound, was achieved simply by drop D tuning and a Digitech Whammy Pedal (plus a whole lot of talent!). Fucking guy is just amazing.
whammy epi!! absolutely down for this.
Love playing this on guitar! Makes me feel like a rebel rock star
I played a few shows when I was a young man and we played this song. It got the best reaction of everything we ever did. What a night
That plec is in the Twilight Zone. I once had a rattle coming from my bass cab, turns out it was a fork, yes a fork that was causing the vibration! How the feck did a fork get into my cab! 😅
Fork knows
9:34 just on my way to work, taking some of my Creon tablets and that made me spit them out - and possibly made me a little late for work, I salute you sir!
I saw RATM at the Big day out, Zack had the crowd in the palm of his hand, best mosh pit I’ve ever been in.
As always, excellent my friend
You had several picks in there! I always do that but i found the trick is slightly tilting the guitar to the neck side and doing more gentle shakes, comes out pretty quick
I try and get the pick to slide over, central to the soundhole then invert the guitar quickly.
Shaking a pick out of your acoustic guitar and then watching it fall on the floor into another dimension where all lost picks live. Glad to know it happens to all of us.
We need to see a Digitech whammy episode for sure. Great video Justin
Boy, I sure can relate to that guitar shake and the elusive pick retrieval trick .
I saw them live once. It was WILD! 🤘🎸
I watched The Darkness at Godiva Festival in Coventry some years back.
"Lets get The Darkness back on the fucking map" this fella said. Great to see he's still out and about.
you crack me up! keep it up young man! oooh young man! 😆😆
Had me is stitches at the end there trying to get the pick out . Just had visions of you trashing the guitar on the floor and saying. Finally lol
As a guitar player, I would enjoy hearing you get into the weeds with commentary on gear and behind the scenes takes!!!
Mosh pit classic!
So brings back memories of happy, happy times.😁❤️👍
...vacuum cleaner? 🤷
As a Vancouverite, I loved every minute of it. Also it happened the day after the Hosts were let go.
Real enjoyed this video, keep going !
This once happened with another song, on radio M80 here in Portugal. Bryan Adams' "Run to You" repeated at least 7 times. I think it was by accident. Survivors of this event, please comment.
I saw them at Reading 93.One of the best live performances l ever experienced.
Lights out, Vancouver radio. Turn that shit up!
I’d definitely watch gear centric videos and how they relate back to songs like that!
I love the blue shades 😎 I'd love a pair but od like purple 💜
Please so a whole episode on the digitech whammy. Not a huge effects fan but this pedal is intriguing, and a legend of guitar equipment
Neil Young was a “ Pioneer “ of drop D tuning in the early 70’s most of his songs were double drop D tunings. Cinnamon Girl is one giant of a song.
@@jamesnunn7181
I think that was in Down By The River, not Cinnamon Girl.
@@jamesnunn7181
Yes. Go to the one minute 54 second mark of Down By The River for Neil's classic one-note solo. I remember my mom and I laughing about that when I was a teenager, even though we both loved Neil Young.
@@jamesnunn7181
The Cinnamon Girl solo isn't really one note though - sounds like he's doing a double-stop lick.
@@jamesnunn7181
Jesus is a great guitarist, but we're talking about Neil Young here.
Christmas number one. BBC 7 am. When Zack started swearing. Best moment in BBC history 😂
THE PIC DID DROP OUT!!!!!!!!!!! but you carried on shaking the guitar. dying lmao
I've never been to a Rage concert but every recording of their live performances I've seen is nearly flawless
Uhm.... "Rage" is a completely different Band.
😖😳😖
Dude you are all time. Love it.
