In retrospect, the irony of changing characters like Hades and Ravana from tanky classes to damage classes is that this allows them to use the various Items meant to make squishies tanky, shifting them back into their classic tanky roles. Making them better in them than they otherwise ever could have been, too. Lonos Mask is special.
That old Nox 3 design looks like so much fun to play with. Having an offensive root/cripple (while inside an enemy? Unclear if that's how it works but it could be cool) or a shield while inside an ally is quite cool imo. Abilities with totally different modes of play to them are awesome, and we don't really have many multipurpose abilities in smite right now. Could be super interesting if done right.
Yeah I love those abilities honestly, the ult being usable from inside an ally too so you can pop into them for a shield, silence and stum when they dive in then pop into enemy and root.
Would be cool, but the few times they tried a bit end up nerfing them to the ground, like the gods mentioned here, persephone etc EDIT: by nerfing to the ground I mean the summoning aspect.
Hypothetically Speaking, many gods could, by their lore, double up on magical and physical roles, or at least have abilities that deal hybrid damage like Surtr alone currently does. Odin for example could be as much a Mage or Guardian as he is a warrior, because he’s literally The Norse god of magic (So much so that he was basically the inspiration of the modern take on Wizards, with their cloaks and hats and stuff. Also Santa Claus too, but if THAT translated into smite they’d just combine Odin’s ult with Apollo’s.) Cabrakan on the other hand is a magical guardian, yet is also a literal living mountain with a VERY Assassin/Warrior style, rough and tumble physical kind of play-style, so he could easily be a warrior or assassin (He already has a Fat Loki skin and everything to hammer the point home).
You missed a major change with hades, his 3 got nerfed to do only half dmg to god. As a support built damage you easily one shot people at lvl 4 by dashing them and fearing them into the wave into your 3. This also ended up healing you and allies more than what hel's heal does which was op.
I like Ravana as an assassin personally as he fits the role of a "safe" jungler. His main problem right now lies in his shield and overall base damage that lets him shine with protections. Tone these down and he'll find his spot back in the meta as jungler with a built in aegis & beads for a safer playstyle.
I'm still holding out hope that Thor will be reverted back to a Warrior. Everything about his kit shouts "warrior". Stronger when surrounded by enemies. Spinning around wildly. A deployable wall that stuns. An ult to dive into the enemy backline. The boomerang is the only one that doesn't really fit. Plus, just listen to his voicelines. "Hiding is more Loki's thing..." "Ah, a warriors tool!"
I played during closed beta and I remember some pretty funny things of how broken certain characters were. I remember seeing Guan as really bad through most of it when compared to other gods. His ult was missed so frequently in matches that I never played him during beta and before rework. Several games saw Bakasura played a lot who used to have cc immune during the entire ult duration so he would run in ult kill anyone because no one could stun or dps him. Though one change that you missed that most people might not know is Zeus was a guardian when he released and his detonate skill stunned. He had a poor early game but as the match went on it got worse to deal with. Old Nox was cool and I remember my friend was one of the few people who could use old Nox effectively.
For Ravana I'm pretty sure the reason they changed him was because there were warrior only items that he could take too much advantage of being a warrior with an assassins kit, so the change was mostly to stop him from building certain items
AFAIK there have never been warrior only items. Just physical melee only ones like stone cutting sword and Arondight which he could build before and still can now.
I'm just hoping Nox have a better passive that fit into support role at this point, also Morrigan passive change to be more utility based is also not bad. Like Movement or something, so that she can be a good jungler pick. Mage passive needs more variety and utility tbh
Thinking of Cupid as a Mage and Hachiman as a Warrior really makes me want to see HiRez utilize archers in non-Hunter classes. Some mythically powerful archer whose bow is magic would be an insanely cool mage (similar to Morgan using a magic sword at range). And I know it's already extremely rare to break the rule that Hunters and Mages are ranged while the other 3 classes are melee, but even like an Assassin using a bow (maybe with a shorter max range like Sylvanus) would also be incredibly cool to implement.
I dislike Hades change to mage. Even though he was ranged and players commonly built damage on him, I feel like his kit worked better for disruption and leading the charge on enemies. His kit should've been given to Charybis and him given a rework.
I’ve been on the fighter/brawler train for years now. I also feel like with guardian like Charon and Yemoja, and mages like Aphro and Nox, there could be a new classification for these backline supports that aren’t played like other supports.
Original Cupid and Guan Yu I wasn't around for (although I've heard many tales of how broken Guan Yu was). Hades was my main in solo lane in seasons 3 and 4. I really like Hades, but he feels rough to play until you have both defense and lifesteal built (okay, or did years ago, maybe not now). Nemesis I also wasn't around for as a warrior. Ravana was my most-played assassin for a long time due to the time he spent as a warrior. Thor as a warrior I wasn't around for, but with his lore he seems more suited to being a warrior. Vulcan as a guardian doesn't sound good. Now, when tyrannical plate helm was introduced, it buffed Vulcan turret and until that was changed I would usually build it on him. For things not covered in the video, Loki seems like mage might have been better for his lore than assassin. Still, how they actually implemented it was good after the rework a few years ago (before the rework, I generally regarded him as a cheap-shot character who got a free kill with ult and was either useless or PvE farming the rest of the time).
Wasn’t Tiamats first concept a warrior I mean you can see it from the original concept art and her ground stance is very warrior like. Plus on release she was meta solo laner. At least that’s what I remember correct me if I’m wrong
I've been calling for a rework to the whole class system tbh, but if they only did one single part of it, I'd agree with you and say they should add fighters as a class for the tanky assassins and damage warriors
I used to main Hades back when he was a Guardian, and I was the kind of player who didn't read patch notes so I was pretty confused when he suddenly became a Mage. I do still main Hades btw. I'm the guy who plays him in Mid, for better or worse.
Nemesis and Thor should stay as assassins while Ravana could be brought back to Warrior. Nem does have that 'all-in' vibe assassins have. A friend was the one that convinced me Thor is a great assassin. He isn't a sneaky boy that creeps around to stab you in the back he is One-Punch Man that kills things a single blow he does looking you right in the eye. Ravana has that semi-defender vibe that makes him look good in a warrior slot. He still needs a nerf though, I think if the passive only stacked on god hit with abilities it would be better for Assassin-Ravana it could help limit the shield gain.
Yup, originally just a slow with no damage, then did damage. Then did damage and stunned. Then back to stun but no damage, then back to some damage again. It's had a wild ride.
I think changing Rav back to a warrior would be pointless. Assassins and warriors share the same melee basics, physical damage, and item pool. There is a chance that he will be predominantly played as an assassin in the future because his kit works well in both roles, so it's meta-dependant and we might end up wanting him reverted back to assassin in a few years when the meta favours burst Rav.
Honestly i like to play Eset but somehow i feel like i don´t do shit with her. Either in damage im superhard lacking (especially after the item nerfs) And for raw support i kinda feel like i don´t do enough. Maybe thats also more on me idk.
(New to smite don’t judge me) Why doesn’t smite have more gods catered to just the support role, I’ve seen cases where guardians are always being moved to solo lane. I’m a past league player so wrapping my head around it, is kinda confusing cause in league there are sometimes when supports are in other lanes, but just not as often to the point where they switch lanes or entire kit changes into a bruiser
I've only been playing heavily for about 2 years now, but in my opinion it's easier to use a warrior in the support role than it is vice versa. Sure, there's a few outliers like jorm or terra, but I see much more warriors in duo than I do guardians in solo
i’ve been saying for a long time that smite should remove the warrior and guardian role and replace them with “support, tank, and fighter” so obviously gaurdian are considered “supports” when some aren’t even supports like jorm. I think smite should separate warriors and guardians into these classes as some gaurdians are obviously meant to be and play as a support like yemoja for example. then some gaurdians are just simple tanks like kuzenbo or jorm and even some warriors fit the “tank” idea better too like guan or nike. And of course, the fighter class like intersect said would fit perfectly with those bruiser/brawler gods like gilgamesh, erlang, etc. This would allow smite to have a lot more variety in how they label certain gods with roles- a main and sub role. an example would be yemoja: she would clearly be a Support/Tank. being primarily a support but secondly a tank. Aphro would be a Support/Mage. Primarily a support but secondly a mage. Or even someone like achillies would be a Fighter/Tank. Primarily a fighter/bruiser/brawler, secondly a tank. This could allow smite to really highlight that gods playstyle. Kinda like how some mages like zhong and hades are really weird mid range mages that could be made to shift more on the tanky side like a Mage/Tank, primarily a mage but secondly a tank, you know what i mean?
Nilohotep that love craft fucker, that should be added with old vulcan thought process, dude is literally all about rituals and summons from what i knos
I don't play Thor but for the first few months I played Smite I just assumed he was a warrior. I mean Thor God of Thunder as an assassin? That doesn't fit lol

I think smite needs to handle assassins and Warriors like how league handles physical assassins and fighters. Although not in much of a better state in terms of balance they do manage to make better item sets for each subtype, for example they created lethality for the sole purpose of assassins using it making them very front loaded and not sustain based and Fighters work on dealing more sustained damage but less upfront damage requiring trades to be precise. Smite can achieve this same harmony in a variety of ways but here is some ideas I would like for them to try. 1st: They need to try and make fighters mostly sustain based and assassins burst based in terms of damage by reworking a ton of heroes. This will of course make both roles feel less diverse but it will make it easier to balance both in the long run. And I say this as a braindead Chaac main I want to do more than just chuck axes at people. 2nd: They need to rework bluestone pendant and brawlers beatstick. As they deal a lot of damage over time for little investment, this means that both Assassins and warriors profit from them, heck even ability based hunters benefit from them as well. Its a lot of free damage for low amounts of effort. Instead try and change the items to have a higher skill floor or rework their effects entirely, because at the moment half the roster can use Bluestone pendant. 3rd: They need to find a way to balance investments between protections and damage instead of forcing gods to choose between protections and damage. Because right now the reason why Ravan is so strong going tank is not only due to his passive but also due to the fighters can get damage for building more tanky. And he can deal a lot of sustained damage for an ability based god. Its also why Vamana is so strong as he can build a lot of damage and still be tanky during his ult. If you want fighters to be balanced they need to split their builds up a bit between two different item types or just risk being both front loaded and hard to kill with low down time.
#revertravana but also consider thor being a warrior he fits better as a warrior then an assassin because of the amount of stuns and aggressive passive imo Edit: also, i always thought culcan would be an interesting god if he was a melee char instead of a ranged, always looked and fit better

imo i want vulcan to be a guardian again ... he just doesnt sound like a frail mage :D
Personally the only rework ive never agreed with was ravanas. Hes always been a warrior to me his kit just screams brawler not assassin.

#revertravana but also consider thor being a warrior he fits better as a warrior then an assassin because of the amount of stuns and aggressive passive imo
