  • Two saxophone giants from different era's, what an energy! Hear Phil Woods (sorry, he looks a bit like Dr. Phil) and David Sanborn (he looks like the professor from "Back to The Future") on an arrangement of "Willow Weep For Me" (with hints of "All Blues").
This was taken from David Sanborn his tv show called "Night Music" in 1988 with guest Phil Woods: • Phil Woods and David S...

Apologies to them serious jazz friends, but I can't unsee Phil Woods as Dr. Phil (don't know what does it mostly... the name or the moustache) and David Sanborn really has a nutty professor vibe hear. But boy, are they on fire! Two icons of the alto sax, with both different sounds and approaches, yet, complementing each other graciously.
What part do you like the most? The joint Bernstein quote towards the end, or maybe the fact it was in the year of bending...
As an aside, that incredible lick at 2:10 is a featured lick and completely broken down in the "21 Saxophone Licks unraveled" among others also including one by Sanborn (different solo). If interested, get more info here: www.sharpelevenmusic.com/saxophone-licks-unraveled

Loved how Phil was cuttin' Dave with his own stuff with his high note intro.... reminds me of Roland Kirk at Carnegie Hall with Mingus...

Not only that, Phil also demounted the horse as Dave did.😂

But yeah, Roland Kirk doing all those impersonations is great. What a talent.

Loved this clip since I first saw it in the 90's on a friend's VHS tape. Huge Phil Woods fan. Sanborn has an impossible choice--solo first and get cut by Phil after, or follow Phil and try to hold up to what he just played...kudos on your ears for the transcription.

Phil was such a great guy. Always to the point, even to a fault. He never had much patience for people who didn't put their all into their music, and i think that showed in how he played.
Fun fact, his house in PA (before he passed) had wooden carved saxophones as the porch balusters. Always knew which house was Phil's lol

Sounds like you've known him and live around where he lived? Such a great voice on the sax, love his early work with Quincy Jones' big band

@@SharpElevenMusic yeah, he lived about 10 minutes from me. In his later life he pretty much lived at the Deer Head Inn in Delaware Water Gap, PA. Ran the COTA programs there. I had the pleasure of knowing him and playing with him a little at the end.

@@SharpElevenMusic definitely, he was killing it all the way to the end. Best memory I have of him was we were playing at a local college, he decided to take a solo so he stood up, ripped out his oxygen tubes from his nose and absolutely shredded for like 32 bars. Then sat back down and put his O2 back in, dude was a beast.

Amazing that Dave recovered after getting cut this bad!! I knew Phil was cold but dayum. For my chorus I'm gonna do everything you just did but better...

The first time I saw David Sanborn was in another video that is an ABSOLUTE banger of performance that totally would fit your channel for an epic transcription. "Stormy Monday" with David Peaston and Dianne Reeves

Didn't know that one yet, just checked it out, amazing! The essence of the blues in all respects, that sax solo, and omg, David Peaston and Dianne Reeves...

Phil's last low Bb also revealed his sense of humor as he quoted "Zoot" playing the very last note of the Muppet Theme, followed by (Zoot's) semi-confused glance into the bell.

Phil and Dave were also together on the series that Ramsey Lewis did for PBS. They did “Willow” and also “Senor Blues” which Phil dubbed “Senior Blues” 😂
