I DEFINITELY want a multimeter troubleshooting video! It's the one thing I see a lot of other channels promise and never come through on. As I type this I'm looking at Kramer with no sound output that I know isn't a busted output jack so "YES!" on that video!

A bath mat from Dollar General works great as a guitar mat.

Great video Dylan! Well thought out and presented. Thoughtful comments about when to buy better quality tools and when to buy tools that are less expensive because those types of tools sometimes don't last a long time, like your flat file, and will need to be replaced. I have a Weller soldering station and iron exactly like the one you have. I use it pretty much all day every day while repairing and restoring vintage, and not so vintage, guitar amps so the iron is on a lot. I can go through an iron every couple of years so I buy two irons at a time. The last batch of irons came with a rounded triangle at the business end of the handle instead of a circular end and LEDs in each of the corners of the triangle. I was skeptical at first because I have a fairly well lit shop but those LEDs do help with focusing light in the area that you are solder in. I do some wiring work for a local music store that offers guitar repair and the LEDs really do light up the control cavity when you are soldering the pots, caps, and wiring. The Weller model number is SP40NUS and they run about $16.00 on Amazon. You should try one out.

Great list Dylan. I like the breakdown based on the tasks. Wish I had seen this video when I was starting out.

A string spacing ruler is pretty helpful if you’re making a nut from scratch. A fretting hammer and/or fret setter are kind of important for fret work since sometimes you can fix a high fret without filing. A fret slot saw, fret bender, fret nippers and fret pullers are necessary for more intermediate jobs.

This is so true! I started with a crappy, $12.99, 15 W soldering iron and it was almost impossible to swap pickups. Got a good one and now it takes a minute or two tops to solder.

Very helpful, like how you divided the the task list, like Dastardly Dave (comment below) wish I had seen this before, but now when I break or wear something out I know what to replace it with, thanks again and I like your down-to-earth instruction method.

I'm a carpenter/ maintenance guy . Also do my share of woodworking. So I'm pretty much tooled up. Done a fair amount of mods, as far as changing any of electronics, nuts and other hardware. Also have filed and recrowned frets. My next thing I wish to do is pull and replace frets. I was looking at your press. I know you use it for your pickups but I'm thinking of finding one like it, perhaps a little bigger. And rigging it to put in frets.

We have the industrial-grade Weller soldering irons at work. I'm not a wiring guy professionally, but the techs we have told me to buy a cheap Weller, like the one you have, because even their cheap stuff is fantastic.
I will offer one other suggestion for a multimeter. I have the TekPower TP9605BT. It cost me about $80 years ago, but it looks like you can get them for about $45-50 now. It's true RMS, has capacitance and inductance as well. We put it on the o-scope at work and it was actually just as accurate as the $200+ Flukes we have.

I love that Weller iron. I had a couple of cheap ones, but I didn't have the best heat control. With the Weller I don't have to worry about it at all.

Doing a Tele Build now. Last thing to order is the pickup set. Your flat six set seems like a good option. Neck not too boomy with some air and the bridge does not rip your head off. The last Tele build I had search for the right bridge pickup that didn’t want to ice pick my ears. It was the Pre B-1 by Dimarzio I used. This time I don’t want search forever. The flat six demo you did sounds good. Gonna try the super switch mod as well.

Nice comprehensive and educative presentation. You’re right about tools. Cheap tools just kill the fun in it. Make me so 😡. I’d rather not do the job. Hey! That’s a great idea! Sorry honey but my tools are so cheap that I cannot repair the dishwasher. Then I go with my well made guitar tool kits for a wonderful day. Thanks Dylan, you just change the course of my life 😝. That’s not my fault honey, Dylan says.........

Thanks Dylan, great concept with the different 'levels'!
It's like you read my mind, I'm shopping for my first basic tools but already thinking of nut files. Question: do I need different sets of files for different string gauges? Or can I get away with using the 10 set for 9s (and maybe 8s or 8.5s) too?

      If I may....
Guitar tools are like wedding favors. You can get a candy bar for $2....but if you call it a "wedding candy bar" , now its $8.
You can get slot files for $1 on ebay , call them guitar nut files......well now you're paying $15 .
A mix tape is a dearing sentiment, call it a burnt cd and it's a felony.
      It's all about wording.

This video is quite helpful! 2 Quick question regarding potting...#1: Best setting for the crock pot Low, High or Warm? And #2: I have an SD pickup that was potted, but has microphonic squeal. Can I just dunk it in to re-melt the wax and Re-pot it? Thanks for all the helpful tips over the years!!

Oh. And about using multi meter - any tips on how to use it to find out parameters of unknown pickups? For example, finding out if humbucker you get from garage sale bin is neck or bridge? Or figuring out which one of three goddamn identical looking singles is the one with reverse-wound and which cable is which on it? (There are sometimes huge discrepencies when it comes to cheaper ones and nobody seems to follow set standard + all I could check was magnet polarity ^^')

++ to cheap soldier irons suck, even my electrical engineering students are afraid of soldering till I get them on an adjustable iron with a new tip and a flux pen.

Hi Dylan! I bought that orange LCR meter you showcased in previous video (hopefully you got some affiliate change!). When I measure capacitance of some humbuckers at the 200PF setting I get a -1 reading. Is this because the capacitance is beyond the readable range of 200PF? Any suggestions? Still learning, thanks for all the info. Cheers!

Say Dylan, any chance for a deep dive video about Varitone circuit? Ya know - BB King Lucille 6-pos fixed cap switch-o-dingy. I've been checking out whatever info I can find about it and it seems there is a metric TON of discrepancies in what people say of forums... ofr example - is that 1.5 henry choke at the end necessary? Can you wind one yourself easily?? Shouldn't it be 3.5H or even 15H as some say?? What do the parallel 10M resistors really do? (swapping them in and out of the circuit doesn't really seem to make any impact on sound...) Whatever other stuff you feel like mentioning / a proper deep dive into this forgotten cousin of the tone pot will be welcome :)

Dylan you forgot, without the support of your personal therapist. Forty acres surrounded by empty forties so when you just want to take a stroll and and let it out so to speak. It can be annoying if your neighbors are apartment dwellers. Nothing's fare fair fayer whatever I have to glue a nut in, my first in so many quarters, I just walk around with my Elvis Presley lifted upper lip smile.
