I have been duped. I came here for a set up in fifteen minutes, and I got some tosser talking about E flat and a guitar tech who clearly hates the tosser.
I don't think so, he seems a bit stressed out by the rush of the video but other than that, the other guy is just trying to have a conversation whereas the tech is trying to do his job ^^
Handy tip! If you don't have a feeler gauge for checking neck relief, on a Gibson les Paul, hold 1st and 15th fret on high E , on the 7th fret the distance between the bottom of the string and top of the fret should be no more than the thickness of your high E string 👍
I finally did a whole setup on my first and only electric guitar after putting it off for 6 months. This whole video series has been all the information i've needed, i've watched all the videos multiple times!
Congratulations! I'm in almost the exact same boat as you and it was so rewarding. You really feel accomplished! And it's in large part thanks to video series like these :)
@@AlexSoutheyMusic Amen. I almost gave up after ruining the area behind the nut 😅 but finally today after 6 months of being scared to mess it up further I finally got it done. To my surprise it actually does feel 10x better than when I bought it.
This guitar tech knows his stuff! What a pleasure to see someone so passionate about his craft. Thank you so much! My ukelele looks brand new and plays better than ever!
I just started playing my grandpas 67 flying v and it hasnt been played in about 6 years. The neck and everything needs adjusted. So here i am learning.
I get the feeling that you could slip in a few sentences about some body parts in your fridge and the set-up guy would be like 'Yep. Sure' and go right on.
How far a turn is safe or recommend when adjusting the truss rod? I couldn’t tell from when he turned it. And how quickly do the results show in the neck relief after turning the truss rod?
I learnt a lot from this series/playlist/course, really appreciate you taking the time to film and put it up. Some really good insights, ignore the haters in the comments. Carry on the good work you are doing on this channel!
One should never use steelwool on the frets, without masking of the pickups. Should you do it anyways, use masking tape to remove the steel debree from the magnets afterwards!
What do you mean? By rubbing the strings against the frets? Eh. Just get some 0000 steel wool. Don't even need to take the strings off. Just take out the tension and move em aside.
It makes perfect sense. He is saying that he is going to set up the guitar for E flat tubing. Each different tuning has different amounts of tension on the neck. Standard E will have more tension, and E flat wil have less. He is going to adjust the action and truss rod to the correct tension. If he adjusted it to standard E, and the player is always in E flat, that will result in the bow of the neck being off, and can affect fret buzz, bending notes etc.
I like to set-up my own guitar and basses. But every year, I take them to my old luthier friend. He looks at them, looks me in the eye and says, "If you watch, 100% extra, if you help, 200% extra, if you tell me how to do my job, 500% extra." A few days later, my instruments are better than new and setup just as I like them. We often have a few ouzos together as he is an older Greek gentleman. The kindest thing he said to me was, "You are an idiot, but you play OK." I have been going to him for many years.
I always wondered why guys with Les Pauls always have their tailpiece so high? I never have mine like that. I always make sure there’s a good string break angle to help tuning stability. And my Les Pauls hold tune almost as good as my Floyd equipped guitars. Those never go out of tune. But then again, I have the TP6 tailpieces on most of my Les Pauls. I like them so much I put an imperial “made in USA” Gibson TP6 on my metric spec’d ESP Eclipse. Took a little ingenuity, but that guitar never goes out of tune either. Having the fine tuners on the TP6 is awesome too. I bought them initially because I have a lot of Floyd guitars. I got used to tuning at the bridge. But it turns out they are killer for tuning stability too. And dialing in perfect pitch. 👊🏻
So I'm doing my own fret job and setup for the first time. All taught via UA-cam videos. That's right! I'm leveling, crowning, and polishing my frets and then doing a standard setup on my Epiphone Les Paul SpecIal II. Let me tell you! These frets have the best mirror shine they didn't have from the factory. I have a question. I know that to continue, I must restring, set the action, adjust the radius of the bridge and adjust the releif of the neck. What I don't know is after I put the strings on, what's next? Relief, then action? Or action, then relief? Or what?
Relief. Only because if you do action next you will have to adjust it a second time once relief is done. Action will not change relief, but relief will change action. Intonation comes last since both relief and action will change intonation.
I heard this from Phil McKnight when you do a setup, remember to TRAIN. T = Tune R = Relief A = Action I = Intonate N = Nut & Noodle Hope everything has worked out for you!
This gentleman will get a 15 minute setup and spend the evening's gig pulling small pieces of wire out of his fingers and off of his P-90’s. No need to use steel wool in basic daily cleaning. I’ve played for 50 years and have relied on the Jim Dunlop Cleaning System to maintain the entire guitar. Fretboard care, Cleaning and polishing the body. No residue, no harsh chemicals. Dude I absolutely hate the idea of using steel wool. that's why I pretty much refuses to take my guitar anywhere because all these luthiers seem to think that steel wool is ok. And on another note it might be one-hundred-percent okay. I just don't like the idea of it and I'm not going to ever put it on my fretboard
I cringed when I saw him break out the steel wool. And then too be so liberal with it and not even covering the pickups! That shit’s gonna stick to those pickups forever… Me thinks “setup guy” no likey the annoying guitar player? 😵💫 He really was annoying…
There's obviously a lot of ways to do things and diffrerent techs will do different things, but a couple of things.... Always put some masking tape on your pickups before you use wire wool on the neck. If you don't you will get pieces of it stuck to the pickups. I prefer to use just the cleaners and sometimes a credit card to scrape off dirt. The other thing is, there is no neck relief that is good for every neck. 8 thou is a good benchmark but you can go lower if the player doesn't hit the strings hard and maybe higher if they are doing Townsend windmills. It also depends on the guitar. Sometimes they will even go down to 3 thou. Pluck the low E string to see if you have buzz and if you do, you need more relief (and vice versa)
Everything seems straightforward in this video. I'm just unsure where I should start my bridge height at. I've taken my saddle and pins off the guitar and have no idea to what it was set to before. I understand how to change the relief, set the action and intinate. Again, is there a measurement off the body or bridge humbucker ring that can get me close? Then I can adjust my action accordingly? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

hahaha So it should be cheaper but you also don't understand why so many shops have a 1-2 day turnaround? Perhaps it's because the price they charge is fair and they are clearly busy. It's simple economics. Also the amount of time a job like this takes is not relevant, you're paying for the result and the experience of the person doing it. If they are good at their job and people think the price is fair, they get more business and can charge more.
Respectfully, I did not find this useful. I have yet to find a setup video where they have left no detail out. It's as though the luthiers don't want to tell all.
Hi Peter, sorry you didn't enjoy it. Yes, this is a very sped up version of the set up... However, you may find that going over the full course is more useful to you. We cover pretty much everything I think! www.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/james-collins Give it a try! :)
Old cats pots like on that les Paul have a hole in them. You should spray some of the cleaner in the hole and wipe the contacts with a couple of turns of the nobs.
Maybe someone can help here... I changed strings on my epi es335, and i should adjust the truss rod, cause i have fret buff. But the problem is, that i cant put my gripper wrench in. I use the correct size. I read on some websites, that it can happen when someone is trying it with the wrong size gripper wrench and destroys it, but thats not the case, i bought the guitar brand new. I dont know what to do, its really frustrating. Is there anyone who has solution?
Hi Peter, the problem might be able to be fixed by an adjustment to the bridge rather than jumping straight to the truss rod but if the neck isn't quite right I'd recommend finding a local luthier to take the guitar too if your having some truss rod issues as they'll be able to sort it no problem! :)
PLEASE DONT USE WIRE WOOL ON YOUR GUITAR FRETBOARD! The tiny metal particales will harm your pickups even when covered. this stuff stays on the surface and can get into the electronics even after wiping the residue. theres always residue even if you think you got it all.
James said: "I believe they’re just some rubber washers, not sure why, they’re certainly not original! Possibly for vibrations?" Hope that helps a little!
When you stretch your strings, you pull and tug all the way up and down the fretboard. It will go flat from the stretching, keep tugging at that fugger until it stops going flat. Then your strings are ready for all that bluesy, bendy abuse you will subject those metal wires to...
Probably not necessary. If this is his main gigging guitar and not a new one, he probably has the pickups set to the height he likes already. Since they're going to set up his action to his preferred height, then there's no reason to reset the pickups as the distance shouldn't have changed.
Seems like the type of guy that, asks you how you are, but disagrees with you, but then proceeds to tell you in a round about way how you are feeling. To which you have just told him.
Yes, simply because his challenge was to do it in 15 minutes... Leaving no time for that! This is defo not an advert for the perfect set up, just a basic idea!

@@yga After this video
I saw that you provided a few more DETAILED videos. Those indeed are useful.
@@yga I hope you asked him to put the shield back in !! ;-)
MrSongwriter2 He made me do it myself, can you believe it?
Peter, look up Ed Reynolds and Lance Keltner, a series of videos on setting up your guitar. I found it very useful.
Why is the tailpiece so high and what's with the black rings underneat the tailpiece posts?
God If I was the tech I’d have told the dude to come back when it’s done😂😂
What guitar oil brand is that?
Nice Video ! There is interesting wedges on the stop tail piece ! Where can'i find that?
Hi there! Good question - I'll double check with James and get back to you :)
James said: "I believe they’re just some rubber washers, not sure why, they’re certainly not original! Possibly for vibrations?" Hope that helps a little!
0000 wire wool, and no protection on the pickups. :(
Stefano Musica I noticed that too. I always put painters tape over mine before I do it
Yea, those pups are toast if any got on them.
Isn't it a little bit to much to always use wire wool when you clean the fretboard after removing the strings? 🤔
Why not replace the Pot shield? Keep the guitar original surely?
If I was that guitar owner I would've taken it and put it on after.
he used wirewool on the fret board but didn't cover the pickups? won't that cause later issues?
One guy is very rude and the other talks too much.
One guy is being rushed to get a job done faster than he normally would feel comfortable with, the other is bothering him with chatter.
The luthier looks remarkably like Simon Pegg
Simon Pegg is a good guitar tech.
Can someone tell me which is better for heavy metal humbucker or single coil...
Humbucker
I prefer humbuckers, but you can get decent tone with single coils. I.e Yngwie Malmsteen
ART KENSTEIN humbucker
It depends on what you want to play.
Wanna play blues and clean stuff?
use single coil
Wanna play high gain stuff?
use humbuckers.
That's my opinion.
@@Penttinen893 the single coils Yngwie used are humbuckers in single coil size. They're not true single coils
You don't need to open up the bottom of the guitar to clean the contacts. Take the knobs off and spray the cleaner right on the dials of the pots .
When you stretch your strings, you pull and tug all the way up and down the fretboard. It will go flat from the stretching, keep tugging at that fugger until it stops going flat. Then your strings are ready for all that bluesy, bendy abuse you will subject those metal wires to...
What is that tele there in the background??
"Thinline".
Does anybody needs an electronics metal cover?
Great but you forgot the pickup height adjustment.
Probably not necessary. If this is his main gigging guitar and not a new one, he probably has the pickups set to the height he likes already. Since they're going to set up his action to his preferred height, then there's no reason to reset the pickups as the distance shouldn't have changed.
@@spekkio101 In his case yes but this comment was more for the audience than the client in the video.
@@spekkio101 doesn't matter this video legitimately does not show you how to do an actual set up
Wait, did you use steel wool to scrub the neck? That's a huge no no
it's ok to use 0000 steel wool on a fret board
@@DF-mw1sh I still don't like it
Good video with the basics of setting up a guitar. With respect I don't think the tech was 100% comfortable in front of a camera
6:46 you forgot something
@Anonymous Really, and the guy says "that's alright, don't need the shielding". Buddy you have p90s you need all the help you can get.
Let’s just run through this as fast as we can and explain as little as possible 👍
He stated there’s already videos explaining everything in detail,if you pay attention you’d know what’s goin on
what about pickup height?
If this guitar had anything acrually wrong with it, i would personaly feel like i could learn more.
How “mm “is that standard string action “inch” ?
Seems like the type of guy that, asks you how you are, but disagrees with you, but then proceeds to tell you in a round about way how you are feeling. To which you have just told him.
Just wasted 16 minutes of my time.
You used wood soap and left it on? Hmmm... is that good long term to leave a detergent on the fretboard wood?
the tech seems to hate the other guy so he probably did it on purpose lol
You didnt mask of the pickup while working with the steel wool? 🤔🤔
Yes, simply because his challenge was to do it in 15 minutes... Leaving no time for that! This is defo not an advert for the perfect set up, just a basic idea!
