I remember Conroy relating a story about helping out in the aftermath of 9/11 in the kitchen. One of the other helpers recognized the voice and got really excited yelling "Guys guys, we got Batman volunteering in the kitchen!" When no one believed him Conroy belted out in his Batman voice "I am vengeance, I am the night! I. Am. BATMAN!" and of course brought the house down. I always liked that story.

That's a ridiculous misunderstanding of Batman, pervasive in virtually everything post TAS.
Bruce is Batman, and vice-versa. One is not more real than the other.
At the same time, Batman on the beat is as much of a mask as Bruce at the office.

      @sebastienvondoom8615 Рік тому +8

@@JanetStarChild It really is not. Batman is the real man, Bruce Wayne is the public face he puts on. There are some interpretations where this isn't true (Nolanverse springs to mind) but even going back to Adam West and the silver age I'd argue that it's still the case for the "main" Batman.
At most I'd say that neither Bruce or Batman are real and maybe the only time we see the real man is when Batman is talking to the Batfamily or Superman (though Superman is heavily continuity dependent).

Thank you for making this video. Conroy was a man of dignity, empathy, and heroic character. As a small addition to your great overview - pay attention to the cadence shift Conroy uses when shifting between Bruce and Batman. Bruce's cadence is flirtatious, trailing, rising and falling. Batman's cadence is measured always and halting between short thoughts. This is the kind of careful character building detail a true actor finds and delivers. RIP Kevin. Kevin Conroy will always be the voice of Batman for me, for the range and depth that he conveyed and the wonderful stories in which he was a part. This was certainly a touching episode, but I often think of moments such as the Justice League Unlimited episode "Epilogue", which includes a truly devastating moment of compassion with Ace of Spades from the Royal Flush Gang. It's something that often feels lacking in the live action versions, which tend to use a cold demeanor for Bats and give Bruce more warmth (even Bats with his mask off, if you understand yhe difference).

Batman didn't lie. You really can't read in a dream. However, dreams sometimes just tell you things and you believe them (your critical faculties are off, basically). So your dream can tell you "you read this book, and it says this", but you're not actually in the process of reading. This is also why you can dream impossible things. Since the dream can just tell you "you're seeing X" and you believe it, but you're never actually seeing anything (after all, your eyes are closed), it doesn't have to be something that is actually possible in the real world. People can be short and tall at the same time and you accept it.

One of the reasons B:TAS was my favorite Saturday morning cartoon as a kid was that Batman almost always beat the villain through either a moral victory-talking them down from the ledge or exploiting the villain's vice in some way, or through out-thinking them, usually in ways a 12-year-old could understand like the brain hemisphere stuff in this episode. I think it's fitting that he escaped from his version of the "Man who has everything" trap in this way, and shows the balance that B:TAS had. He wasn't an omniscient genius who pulled some solution out of nowhere to show off how smart he is: but he always stopped and took a moment to think, and the solutions he came up with were ones that a grade schooler could see and think, "yeah that makes sense."

I know you have mentioned Mask of the Phatasm before. I think the scene at the grave of his parents is the best scene of Conroy's career and why I think MOTP is the best Batman film. I am 52 and I still tear up thinking about the anguish in the voice as Bruce is begging his parents to let him move on. To my way of thinking it was after this that Batman won out and did become the main identity and Bruce was the disguise. That dichotomy was why, when written well, the Two Face stories are some of the best Batman stories because Harvey is how Batman somewhat sees himself.
Thanks for the info on the DC Pride stories. I gave up regular comics reading around the time of Knightfall, when I realized what I was spending per month would make a car payment when I needed a new car. It is funny to see so much of the 80s and 90s runs of DC stuff continue to get new life in JLU or even more modern DC animated projects, Killing Joke, Death in the Family, Judas Contract, etc. Not sure if that is more of an indictment of newer material or just the play it safe and go with the classics that Execs fall back on.

That was a very nice analysis and history of Conroy's Batman.
And I agree that he, in the end seems very genuine in his outlook towards other people.
I will probably always love the story he tells of 9/11 where he calls and asks if he can help in anyway, and they ask if he has restaurant experience, and of course, as an actor, he does from early in his career, and they ask if he'll just go make meals for first responders, which he happily does. He didn't really interact with them directly, being back in the kitchens, but one of the other volunteers realized who he was, and encouraged him to say a few lines for the guys out front who didn't believe Batman was making their lunches, and when he did, the whole cafeteria of exhausted first responders lit up, with many of them telling him that they took up this kind of career in part because of him, because they wanted to help people the way Batman did.
I really like that story not just because it shows how powerful a story and a character well played can be in inspiring people when things are at their worst, but because when things were bad, Conroy the actor turned up to help in the small way he could as someone who is not actually Batman. And I think that's important, too, that he was genuinely a good person, and that it's possible to help in small ways even if you don't have the training to help in the large ones.

A beautiful tribute to a wonderful man and actor, Steve. And your observation about Adam West and Kevin Conroy being the two memorable Batmans is a fitting one, as West deserves a similar respect for being able to juggle personas due having to - in live action - rapidly switch between his Bruce Wayne and Batman identities while taking to Commissioner Gordon to sell the idea of two different men having a conversation while at two different locations. As much as the 60s Batman series gets labeled as camp, West's Batman was one who did what he did to stop another child from losing their parents, not to beat up people for tiny indiscretions. Like Conroy's later take did. It's why the episode where Conroy's Bruce Wayne thanking Adam West's Simon "Grey Ghost" Trent for inspiring him in "Beware the Grey Ghost" makes it one of my favourite B:TAS episodes.

Perchance To Dream is an episode I remember really well. It's one heck of a psychological rollercoaster which like you stated, is quite relevant even in the thoughts of peoples nowadays. It puts you right there deep in every moment and eerie feeling. The writing as always is bloody phenomenal the way it dives right into such a wicked mind f*ck, and it reminded me a little of the classic Total Recall. Have to say though, my all time favourite episodes are the more tragic ones, featuring Mr Freeze, Clayface, Killer Croc and Baby Doll. They always end on a sad note, which was very ballsy for a series aimed more at youngsters than adults, because it's more relatable and true to life. There isn't always an happy ending...

This was such a good tribute to Kevin Conroy. I could see why this would be one of his favorite episodes since it explores much of Bruce's mind, offering him a version of a paradise, only to find out that it's all a lie. I loved his performance as Batman. He captured the gruff and dark knight persona, but there was always a feeling of warmth and empathy there as well. It's why moments where he connects with villains or tries to reach out to them work when he does care about helping people. I read Finding Batman after he passed on and it was so heartfelt and powerful. Kevin Conroy himself seemed like such a sweet and genuinely nice person. I still hope how much he knew fans loved him and how much his performances meant to us. I hope that he is at peace and his family and friends will be okay.

And let's not forget that Conroy redid Bruce Wayne and Batman AGAIN for the New Batman Adventures. In B:TAS, his Bruce Wayne was light and low key, in NBA, his Bruce Wayne was a bit more serious in tone, though it still had the Wayne lightness. Conroy's Batman of the NBA was DEFINITELY more darker in tone than the B:TAS Batman. It was even more grittier, too. Wow, what a talent he had... 😏

He is missed this Christmas so at the end of the year i will toast his life and thank him. Fare thee well Kevin Conroy i hope you find peace at last.

Not sure how intentional it was, but the episode reminds me of the Superman issue "For the Man Who Has Everything" by Alan Moore. Superman finds himself in a place where Krypton was never destroyed and he lives a peaceful life with his family, pursuing all of his passions with no worries about the state of the world. And it just feels wrong to him, as if he knows it's too good to be true and that he is needed for a greater purpose. He tearfully accepts that he can't live a lie and wakes up to continue to live the harsh reality that the place where he always would have belong is no longer there. It's damn good stuff. People call Superman boring, and while I get the criticism, but when a Superman comic really explores the character and what he stands for? Well, like with Batman there's a reason the character has endured every swing of popular culture and politics for 80 years.

Such an amazing man. I can't imagine what he felt doing this particular episode, but I can only assume that it hit very close to home for him. I first picked up a Batman comic when I was about 3 years old back in the 70s, and he's been my favorite hero ever since. But like Kevin Smith once told Conroy, it's now his voice I hear when I read a Batman comic. Thank you so much for doing this episode, Steve. Kevin Conroy will forever be my Batman.

Maybe this is unfair, since he voiced the character for over a decade, but- no other on-screen Batman has come as close to capturing everything that makes Batman so great as Conroy's. This Batman is smart, savvy, funny, competent, brave and compassionate, but also flawed- jaded, withdrawn, and almost adorably slow to build genuine connections with the people who care about him. He moves through multiple arcs touching every corner of that version of the DC universe, each satisfying and gripping in its own right. Conroy's Batman is my gold standard for the character, and no other adaptation has met it.
Is that too high a bar? Maybe, but to lower it is to undersell the character, the actor, the animators, artists and writers, and the universe they were a part of.

Reading the graphic novels or comics Kevin Conroy's voice is the one I hear in my head. I loved the animated series and the Arkham games. His voice IS Batman, and Bruce Wayne.
It was so good that he got to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in a live action setting, and he was excellent as the hero living long enough to become a villain, as the saying goes
I would recommend anyone to watch Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Superb

I remember the episode of Batman the Brave and the Bold where Batman ends up on a planet with a Batman of its own whose life is suspiciously like Clark "Superman" Kent's (also B&B Batman gains Superman like powers on this planet). The Batman of this planet is voiced by Kevin Conroy, so I think of it as the episode where B&B Batman goes to another planet and meets real Batman.

I love how the Matrix took cues from this episode: Cypher wanted to live in the dream world (contrasting Bruce's decision), Mad Hatter and the Matrix are related to Alice in Wonderland, and in the Animatrix episode "Kid's Story", the kid commits suicide to wake up in the real world, just like Bruce here!
My only complain about this episode, derived when I actually tried to read letters in my dreams, just to see if it's possible, and all the letters where readable! So in a way, I debunked this whole story in my own head.

Another great episode from Steve; though I do worry about him. He appears to own a well-stocked comicbook shop; but in all of these videos, I've never seen a single customer pouring over the comics, or furtively stuffing collectables in to their backpacks.
