If your garage door won't open, this video should really help...
How to Fix A Garage Door Opener - the opener shown is the Craftsman 1/2 HP 315 model, however many brands are nearly identical.
There's lots of things that can go wrong with a garage door opener. If you are having problems with it hopefully this video will give you some good clues as to what can be causing the problems:
First start with the obvious and easy to check problems...
Is there power on in the home?
    Assuming yes,
When you push the main button to open the garage do the lights blink or come on at all?
is there anything blocking the path of the door, if it's open is there something in the way of the sensors like a spider web or are they misaligned?
Most sensors have an indicator light that tells you if they are working and the path is clear. If it's not your garage door lights should blink when you try and open it.
There is also the chain, which may occasionally break, although not often. This should be obvious to spot.
If the garage door labors to open but stops then you may have a broken torsion spring. They should look something like this... if they appear to be broken, be careful they are under a lot of tension and can seriously injure you. If you aren't handy call a garage door repair service, if you are handy be sure to really understand what you are about to undertake as injury is likely if you don't know what you're doing.
If the springs appear to be fine check the track on both sides of the door. If they appear bent or misaligned this may be a problem.
If the lights didn't blink then you may have a bad component in the opener.
If your main garage door opener button on the wall will open the garage door but not your remote or keypad, it may be just a bad battery that you can replace.
If your garage door makes a sound like it's going to try and open but fails, and the torsion springs are in tact you may have a bad capacitor.
Capacitors can also disable the motor entirely.
Unplug your opener before attempting to take it apart. A screwdriver or ¼" socket should be all you need.
Open the housing and inspect the components. If the gears appear stripped that's likely the cause. The motor can burn out but it's not a common occurrence.
Depending on the capacitor type it may be easy to diagnose, if there are abnormal bulges or it appears to be leaking then it's likely bad and needs to be replaced however the capacitor may appear to be fine and still be the problem.
Check the power board and the control board, you should remove them to inspect both sides. If either of them appear to have bulging capacitors or areas that have black charring or appear to have burned it has likely failed.
Most of the parts you need are available on several websites including eBay. Just be sure to verify with the seller before purchasing that it will fit your opener.
While this video covered some of the most common reasons for a non functioning garage door opener, hopefully this has provided you with at least a good starting point and checklist.
Thanks for watching & Good Luck!

Thank you for the videos. After doing everything under the sun, it finally came down to replacing the antenna with a larger wire, and I ran it all the way to the garage door and down the wall about 2 feet. Praise Almighty God for the success.

Thank you Andrew, it was the safety lights that had a cobweb or dust that caused the problem. Whew. I just did my wife's door opener and was not up for doing another just yet. I feel like I just consulted my next door neighbor for some great troubleshooting advice. Thanks again!

Andrew, Thank you so much for all your responses! There are two cables which wide up on a reel on opposite sides of the door. There is a button that can be pushed with a screwdriver ... it will release/reset the tension. Once this was done, the door has been moving up/down as before. Thank you again as you were extremely helpful in assisting with diagnose!

Within 30 seconds I had a clue to what the problem was. I had opened the garage door to remove a ladder in the corner. I must have bumped the obstruction light and then the door would not close. (blinking lights) Live and learn.

Thank you for getting me to re-check the sensors, my amber light wasn't on due to a loose connection, must have bumped it. It was hard to see without a mirror, but once I corrected the connection, everything works. Sometimes it just takes someone to go thru the process to jog your memory.

Thanks Andrew…I had a lightbulb on the ceiling that was working intermittently. The garage door would open partway and stop, even after I had the cables and wheels replaced recently and had new spring put in a few years ago. I changed the bulb. I think it fixed my door stopping problem.

Holding the button just causes the door to jolt and buckle in the middle ... the cable/chain does not move or disengage, I sprayed WD40 on it as when I pulled the red cord the cord snapped in two. I placed a service call but they said it may be two days!
Thank you so much for your quick responses and the suggestions!

Hmm.... if you have a step ladder you can probably flip the latch of the release cord. and then let it down. You may have a torsion spring or pulley problem, which can be expensive. If you have a neighbor you know that is handy, maybe ask if they'll take a look at it. If they fix it on a Sunday you'll likely be paying extra. I can't do much without being there though. Sorry.

Thanks Mr. Andrew Hill for the video. At the end there you mention that if the door is trying to open and sounds it, but it's not, then try the capacitor etc. My door actually opens about 5 inches and stops. There's something with the chain that doesn't want to go more the a few inches. Even is the door is disconnected from the middle 'trolly' the chain will spin a bit and stop. Any ideas?

Fixed door won’t close. Thanks for sharing all this. I did a lot of work troubleshooting. Replaced the eyes that looked like they had glaucoma. Made sure the wires were connected. Spayed the rails twice. In the end I gave up and called the professionals. All they did was rotated the little blue button on the motor, so it had more force. Try pulling the red handle hanging down to release the trolly and push the door down by hand. If there is a spot that seems a little difficult, that is where the motor thinks it is hitting someone and retracts the door back again. Don’t think that was discussed in this fine helpful video.

My Craftsman Diehard garage kept making the "clicking noise" and the light blinked on and off without opening or closing the garage door. I then unplugged the power cable of the garage door and left it unplugged for about an hour. When I plugged it back in, it started to work fine again. I'm not sure why it happened, but unplugging it for awhile appears to work. Try it out first and see if it helps!

Good info. It was our gear, which we replaced with no problem. Now, the door is totally misadjusted. I think the problem is that while the chain was off to replace the gear, we ran the opener up and down several times to make sure it was working properly, maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I think. So help! How do I readjust the travel of the door starting from scratch. It's not just a little off, it's WAY off. Thank you! Sandy

Have a Craftsman 1/2 HP belt driven unit. As someone else mentioned, mine works SOMETIMES . Sometimes, however, when the door is down, when we push the remotes or wall switch, the lights will come on the unit, but the motor doesn't pretend to engage. Other times, it works like a champ. It never fails to go down, if it's in the up position. It's just when it's down that it MIGHT fail to raise. To correct it, we unplug the unit for 1/2 hour and it will usually work just fine for a while. It may work for a week at a time before fails. Sometimes less than a day. If it wasn't so intermittent, I might be able to figure it out. I haven't looked at the board or capacitor. However, if you've seen anything like this, I'd like to have a guess.

    • @AndrewDIY
      @AndrewDIY  10 років тому

The capacitor gives it a "shove" or push of electricity to the motor. If it's going down ok and not coming up, then it could be that. That being said, my brother has a garage opener that is intermittent when it wants to work and when it doesn't and it's not the capacitor, and the board appears fine, but it's likely the board failing slowly. So, that's my guess. The Capacitor. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out or if you have any other questions.

Can the capacitor kill all lights including the wall mounted wired garage door opener? I left to go to work today and I got nothing. I have power to the overhead garage door opener, verified with an electrician wand, breaker is also fine. I even reset it. But the overhead opener and the wall mounted have no lights and no response to anything. Circuit board or capacitor I assume? I'm at work and trying to trouble shoot in my head.

I have an old OVERHEADDOOR 55A opener. Every so often when I push the button the motor just buzzes. Nothing is trying to move, everything is lubed and functional, chain, sprockets ETC. Just a motor buzz. If I push on the door it will start moving. Is this most likely a capacitor? FIXED-
I switched the capacitors around from my other opener and now it doesn't work. The failure followed the capacitor so it is in fact the capacitor. YAY! Ordered two new ones, $8 each.

Hi Andrew, just fixed the sensors on one garage door and it works normal. The other is the problem. When we push the wall door opener, we hear a click and light goes on but there is no attempt to open. We tried moving the capacitor to the working garage door and it worked so we believe that is fine. We looked over the remaining electrical board, etc and do not see burned components or anything that looks abnormal but also don't know what normal is. Thoughts????

Thanks for posting this video. It didn't quite address my problem. I have an older Alastair garage opener. The door opens and closes with the manual button in the garage, and opens with the remotes but only sometimes. I've replaced the batteries but it still only opens once and then will not work again. Question? Garage door would go up, then stop, and we'd have to re-click to get it to eventually go back up. Now the chain doesn't move at all; sounds like it wants to open, but the chain doesn't move. A while back I noticed a metal threaded cable alongside the door that was just hanging there. I thought this cable somehow wrapped around the metal wheels of the garage door. But could this cable actually be the tension cable? Yesterday when I tried to open the door, it went up a few inches, then stopped, and I watched it slowly collapse/close down, like there was nothing holding it from falling down. Any ideas? Could we self fix (not too handy), maybe the motor, but is that cable related to the tension coils? The ones that can cause serious injury? Thank you!

Thank you for sharing how to troubleshoot a problem garage door opener. Let try to describe my garage door problem....
I left the garage door up and came out at night to close it but once it hits the ground, it goes back up. So I adjusted the travel arrow to no avail. Since it was night, I closed it but once it started back up again, I hit the button to stop it. This morning when I tried to open it, it only goes up halfway. So I closed it but now it does not go up or down. The chain was loose so I tightened it. The plastic driver inside is in good shape. The part with the emergency release only goes forward as if it is trying to close the garage but the garage door is already closed. This has caused another problem - door hits the middle bracket holding the spring on its way up. Any ideas at this point would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I dropped my Sears remote Garage door opener. I figured it was toast as 1/2 Horsepower motor did not respond to it. I took the Remote Control inside the garage and changed the batteries as they were quite old. When I pressed on it, the Motor just hummed. I pressed on the switch mounted on the wall and the motor still just hums. The light associated with it turns on but that is all that happens. It seems too odd that trying to start it with a defective Remote Controller and even more odd that everything would break down at the same time.

Whoa, not a problem you want to have. I'd try and reset your opener. You'll have to reprogram your remotes. If that doesn't work you can replace your board? If it is a frequency issue that may fix it. I don't know of a way to test for interference with absolute certainty. You could have a short in the wall button wiring. I suppose you could cover your antenna wire, wind it all up so it's compact and then put it in an anti static bag or wrap it in foil, that should reduce it's receptiveness but I can't guarantee. Good luck. Sorry I can't give you any better ideas.

I have 2 Chamberlain garage door systems. I hardly use one of them. I have no idea how one motor part fell right out of the ceiling. It appears that there is nothing wrong with the motor because it landed on a couch still attached to the chain system and still attached above the garage door opening. There are 3 bolts that held the motor in place. Should I get longer bolts or should I reattach it using a differant hole ? Go easy on me I'm a 61 year old woman thanks for any advice. I think that it will depend on whether or not it was bolted into a stud?. They were installed 12 years ago. Yet the one that I use all the time is still working fine. I'm going to check the ceiling with a moisture meter. I wonder if I could attach a two-by-four and then attach the motor to that?

When I click the button to open the garage door, the door comes up maybe few inches the first time and stops, then if I click another time it opens up like a foot and stops then when I click the third time, it almost drops back to the ground and pulls it back to open completely (so it eventually opens). Would you say this is a capacitor problem? Also, when I close the door, it literally drops the door near the end as if it doesn't have enough strength to hold the weight from dropping. Is this a problem with the motor? Thanks in advance for your response!

I have a Stanley garage door opener (about 25 years old) with a tube rail. When the door is closed I can manually lift it up about 1/2 inch. When it rains or snows it gets in . How do I adjust this.

My Craftsmen opener works fine, but the lights have suddenly stopped working. They don't come on at all...manually using the wall switch or automatically using the remote. I changed both bulbs with no luck. I tried unplugging the power hoping a reset might work, but still no luck. Suggestions?

Had garage door adjusted and tuned. Our liftmaster worked and remotes as well however now after the tune up the remotes do not work. I reprogrammed per instructions and they worked fine, for a few times. Now they wont work nor reprogram. Ive tried unplugging, Ive tried reprogramming, Ive tried erasing then reprograming, once in awhile it will open once then stop again. Stumped...bought new remotes,, nothing.

My transmitter is connected and works, but only the wall button opens or closes the door. This is true of two different remotes we have tried. The wall station is a single button and not locked; we have reset the learn button/transmitter and successfully connected it to the opener. Why would only the wall button work if the transmitters are connected?

I have an old Genie. when I push the button, it starts to open but stops I have to push it several times before it gets going. When the door gets about half way down, I can let go. The sensor does not blink so I assume they are lined up properly. What to do?

Hi, I have the same type of the garage opener as yours. It started that the garage door opener shut off himself. When tapping the the opener, it came back on. It then went off again after a few seconds when I hear the click. Nothing is wrong with the power outlet. Every time, when I hear the click, everything goes off. Any help is very much appreciated.

My Sears opener will not go into program mode. I push the button and the LED is suppose to flash and it does not it stays on solid green. Any ideas on fixing this?
Also the remotes (have 2 that do the same thing) act like they are weak (have replaced the batteries). I have to push the button many times or sometimes hold it down for a long time for the door to open and I have to be fairly close. Any help on this?

Thanks Andrew. I just tried reprogram again after reboot. It started working again. I don't know how long will it last this time, Maybe a couple days? Someone said if there is LED light around, like in neighbor's house, there might be interference. Could that be the reason for the problem coming back and forth?

Hello! Thanks for the video! My Chamberlain door opener stopped working after a power outage due to thunderstorm. Wall remote light is on but nothing happens. Light on unit doesn't turn on; motor makes no sound. I do see a light blinking at the back. Should I give up on it or try to check electrical components? (Already checked outlet and circuit breaker)

Dear Andrew Thank you for posting this video. my problem was not addressed, my garage door opener seems to be working fine but it is not connected to the door. The red handle was pulled. How can I connect the door back to the opener drive.

When the release cable was pulled the mechanism moves pivots down, it just needs to be moved back 90 degrees and then push the opener button, it should automatically re-engage the door and lock into place. I hope that makes sense.

Andrew, I've got a Genie H8000D model. Yesterday my wife attepted to close the door, but didn't see that I had placed a large plastic garbage bin under it (I was doing some yard work)...the garage door came down and slammed onto the garbage bin, then she pushed the up button and the door got stuck and now it won't go up or down, (unless we do it manually). The led sensor lights are lit and the lights work OK, so it's not a power issure or a Torsian springs issue. When we attempt to open, there is no motor sound at all. Is there another 're-set' button or 'reboot' button on the inside. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I have an older unit that does not have the photo sensors nor does it have
a light that flashes when the travel is interrupted. I just replaced
the plastic drive gear. Now the motor turns the gear several times then
it automatically reverses and travels back before before stopping. it
will do this with the chain connected or with the chain not connected.
How do I correct this. I tried adjusting the up and down travel screws
    but it makes no difference

I have 2 garage doors, the remote and wall unit work with one, but only the wall unit works on the main door. I've tried everything in these videos short of changing the remote battery. My question is, if the remote works fine for the 2nd door can it still be a bad battery? Thanks for your video, it was great (:

Help! I have a craftsman 315. I pulled the release to open manually and I've since reengaged the release cord but the door is trying to close which bulges the door and then it goes back to the closed resting stop. I've tried everything I have found online to get it to open but it only acts like it wants to close the door then stops.

Andrew Hill I didn't know blinking lights meant there was an obstruction. When you explained that, knowing that there was no obstruction and that the sensors were not misaligned, I checked the wiring at each end of each sensor, and sure enough one connection at the opener end was loose! Thanks again.

Andrew Hill Oh oh, spoke too soon. This morning when the temperature dropped, the door wouldn't close all the way again and the lights blinked. Later when the temperature warmed, it worked again. It seems to be temperature related. The only time it fails is when it's cold out. Any ideas Andrew?

    Hi Andrew,
My garage door goes down all the way to the ground and then automatically goes back up again. We have cleaned everything under the door which may make it go back up. I also notice when it initially starts back up the chain gets a lot of slack and then pulls back into shape. I'm not sure you can understand what I'm saying but can you help?
    Thanks,
    Greg

Genie opener, replaced capacitor and still the motor slicks and stops. Closed the door once and it did open and then is inop again. Last cap replaced less than 2 years ago. New capacitor still same issue with motor clicking. I assume with clicking the problem shouldn't be a board...but I don't know, that's why I am asking here. Power seems to be getting to the motor. What else can mimic a bad cap? Thanks!

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. If the boards look ok, then I would always start with the cheapest best guess, which would be the cap. Sometimes they can slowly fail, intermittently.
