Great video. Perfect for people that actually want to work on their cars, instead of watching some fool tell you that he's going to do something for 10 minutes.
My Mechanic is charging me $780.00 as I type for this same operation on my 2005 x5, he says it will take 2 hours @140. per hour plus parts. I could have watched this vid and saved a lot of money, I probably even had the tools.
Thankyou for your informative video, is that a 4.8is engine do you remember? I understand it's 5 yrs old now.. I've got a drain and have heard that alternator replacement can cost up to 3 k in the shop? I'm eager to have a crack myself. Cheers
And YES loosen the 12 volt red wire terminal nut on the back of the alternator BEFORE you take the 2 long mounting bolts off, otherwise the whole thing will spin around trying to unscrew that nut.
Mine is a 2006 and the tensioner is a T55 Torx in order to loosen the belt to pull it off. Then I took the clutch fan off so I could get that shroud off. That gives you the access from front.
You need a Hercules long reach 3/8 cordless ratchet from harbor freight bro. Trying to back those bolts out with your fingers with gloves on is for the birds
This was a super helpful video bro and i really liked how you didn't waste my time talking about yourself or the weather or way over explaining shit like you're showing a group of kindergarteners how to change an alternator. To many people that post instructional vids love to hear themselves talk. You got strait to it bro. The black hoodie with black 🧤 is like the Mike Tyson of mechanics look, pretty cool. I can't wrench with gloves on I'm like a monkey fuckin a football.
I just did this job on an 06 4.4i I can promise you its T50. T55 is massive and won't even come close to fitting in. Unless someone fucked with it before me. I doubt that but I ordered a new pully and bolts coming in so I will let you know.
@@oilplumber123 no you're right brother i just did the job the other day and it is a t50 but you still need a cordless ratchet you're still using tools from the 60s. Get yourself a Hercules long reach cordless 3/8 drive ratchet from harbor freight for $100 you will LOVE IT!!! crack the tight stuff loose with a wrench or ratchet but run it out with the Hercules
Thank you this really helped me from the other videos out there as I have a 4.8 x5 you saved me £600 bless u

Nice video!! Straight to the point and clear shots of the actual work!
G Meredith thanks I appreciate 👊🏼
Amazing how easy this can be when you have the right tools on hand and know where everything is and how to take it off
These are basic tools lol
@@dflex4180 when did I state they were not basic? Idiot
@dflex4180 torx wrenches isn't basic lol. They don't come in standard
Thanks for the video! Very clear shots of the work. Seems pretty easy to replace.

The torx sockets you mentioned, was hat a T60 and a T50? Im going to do this later
George Smythe t60 is the one ☝🏻

Then I took the clutch fan off so I could get that shroud off. That gives you the access from front.
Also the air cleaner is on the drivers side on my 2006, that is an easy part of this.
I wound up using a T55 on a 2006 model OH and there are plastic caps you pop off with a screwdriver cover the tensioner and the idler pulley bolt.
Nice video. Thanks it helped!!
Can I put a 140 volt
Did u get code p1891 to know it was alternator.
on my 1994 540i air cooled I had to cut off the plastic tub on the side to get it out just now
Ever seened the water cooled alternaters
So I have both of the bolts out and I can't get this alternator out. I've tried everything and I can't get it to come out. Any suggestions?
Tried to get a long extension and hit it so you can loosen it
What bit did you use to take the pulley off
Let me see if I can remember 😂
Did you get it tho

Did you scrape the radiator enough?
Mark S nothing crazy just need to find the right way to pull it out
That's why you pay a professional and not some driveway hack like this guy lol.
slide a piece of cardboard or a small piece of luan plywood against the back of the radiator to keep it from taking on the abuse of this type repair
I did it but i can't take out what is problem?
Khaled Arafah need to keep trying to pull it out
@@dannyd6949 thank you i did it after hard work according to your video
Nice video I'll try it out on my sister's car...
Somebody needs some Milwaukee in there life
Yvette Barquet well I can give you my address so you can send me some 👅👅👅
good video, but, protect the radiator before you do this job
Fuck the radiator just use a little finesse. A cpl bent cooling fins never hurt a thing
That idler pulley is a t55 not a t50
