I had the good fortune of meeting Lucy and while she was nice to me she wasn’t exactly super nice to other people around us. She was curt and definitely the boss. Either way it’s a great memory.

This is just fantastic Harvey!! I got chills hearing about Lucy in the theater when she moved to New York. I am just eating this information up! It's retaining it that bothers me.😊 I can't thank you enough for starting this channel up and I'm so grateful to have come across it. And didn't all us Canadians from Ontario run home from school every day in anticipation to watch I Love Lucy. I know I did and that's probably why I know all of the episodes by rote. And how interesting about her favourite episode being "Queen of the Gypsies". I never would have guessed as that one is among my least favourites and I'm hard pressed to find any episode of Lucy that I don't love. Again Harvey, thanks for all your hard work and effort! 👏 And also a big thanks to Lee Tannen for his amazing incite. I can't wait for the movie to come out.

Harvey thank you so much for this wonderful interview. Another young man, from about 10yrs old for many years came to be friendly with Lucy through frequently going to see her tv show being filmed in the 1970s . He visited her house many times. She mentored him about show business and insisted that he get good grades. graduate high school and get a degree. He wanted to quit school and work in show business. Lucy was so concerned for his future she telephoned his mother about this. This man did graduate school and works in the industry. I wish I could remember his name but he speaks highly of how loyal, connected and caring Lucy was with people she considered her friends.

As ALWAYS…Harvey Brownstone brings us another great interview. I LOVE it when Lee keeps saying “Great question” and “wow, another great question” it’s so true. Harvey pours his heart and soul into every interview and it shows. This is another great one. Lee is down to earth, forthright, truthful and VERY interesting. I LOVED this book when I read it several years ago. For the express reason that he shows Lucy in a very real light. He does not sugar coat. From his writing it is obvious how much he adores this woman. He makes it clear that she is loving and funny and supportive and smart but he also shows us the intricacies of Lucille Ball. We feel we really got to know her, not just know about her. He gave us that gift. If he was not honest and it was two dimensional it would have not been the phenomenal book that it was, the deeply interesting book that it was, the emotional book that it was. Bravo to Harvey for bringing so much out in this interview and bravo to Lee for his insight and honesty and ability to bring his friendship and relationship with Lucille Ball to the page and to the stage and hopefully to the screen. There’s another book I love, it’s called Miss D. and Me; Life with the invincible Bette Davis. It’s written by Kathryn Sermak. That’s another one that I hope gets to the screen. It does the same thing. It brings such a real loving but unvarnished side of Bette Davis to us who didn’t get the chance to meet her. These authors give us such a gift by sharing their stories with us so beautifully. I hope Harvey has, or will interview Kathryn because he will bring the same dignity and depth to the interview that he did with this one and brings to everyone. What a joy this was to delve into things so beautifully!

As a little gay boy, I felt the same with I Love Lucy and The Doris Day Show. I felt these people would love and care about me exactly the way I was. Also during Covid -19 years to date I re-watched all the Lucy shows, of course, I Love Lucy the most. Several episodes I could watch daily, or instance, Home Movies, and Lucy's Dummy and get a belly laugh to start my day. Also, watched at least 10-15 movies that she made 40's-50's-60's, 70's. several times. Half b/w and half in color - some comedy and some drama (Lured, the Dark Corner, The Big Street) My all time favorite is "Lured". During this period have experience several deaths, close friends and family (ages 35-50) - and there is something about her shows that lifts my spirits and I thank her for her gift to humanity. My heart hurts when I see all the tributes, songs, and documentaries about Lucy and Desi - very touching and makes me sad for them that with all their gifts there was a lot of pain.

Harvey, I think Lucie Arnaz is so talented, but what's more important she's an absolutely fabulous human being. I've had some conversations with her and she is the sweetest most down-to-earth person ! I know her daughter Kate as well and she is much like her mother in the most wonderful ways. I think Lucie is a credit to Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and Kate a credit to Lucie Arnaz and Laurence Luckinbill. I think if you ever get the opportunity to interview Kate you and your audience will definitely enjoy knowing her ! By the way she's carrying on her grandparents legacy and it would be great to get her to talk about it. ❤

Actually Kate Luckinbill is more favorable toward Lucille Ball than than her mother is. While Lucie Arnaz is a great interviewee and comes across very centered and at ease with herself and anyone interviewing her - A+ however, she was off putting speaking about her mother, always very ++ towards the father. She minimizes his affairs with other women, saying her father told her they were greatly exaggerated - just the opposite - he had severe addictions: sex, booze, and gambling. I often wondered since Desi had scores of prostitutes on a weekly basis - if the the 2 or 3 miscarriages that Lucy had were due to Desi having syphilis.

I also read Lucy’s & Desi’s autobiographies which were very good. Also, Desilu by Coyne Sanders & Tom Gilbert is very good. There are interviews & stories by family members, close friends & those that worked with her.

  • @terrishimmel9258
    @terrishimmel9258 2 роки тому +4

Where men often marry women for sex and/or eye candy, women often marry men who make them laugh and are faithful. Having come off her marriage with Desi, I think she just needed a good laugh and wanted someone she could control so that he was faithful. It was interesting the interview she and Gary did with Barbara Walters back in the day. That was very telling. I believe Desi was the love of her life and Desi deserves a lot more recognition for all the things he has done. How he revolutionized TV. You were right Harvey, he was the person who brought us the re-run. When Lucy had Dezi Jr., Dezi told the network to just run a prior show again. They were like, why would anyone want to see a show again. Little did they know how mainstream the re-run would become. He came from a culture where womanizing was just how it was. I don't agree with it but at the time, that is just how it was. I think Lucy was a brilliant actress and learned to be funny. I don't think that is her normal behavior. I read/heard somewhere that when a new script came in on the I Love Lucy show, she would go off on her own and figure out how to act the scene to make it funny. It took work. I think that says a lot about her drive to be the best. It was something that didn't come naturally like say, Tim Conway. I was happy to hear the rumors about her rude behavior with fans were not true.

Dede was not so much the caretaker, yes she was there as their grandmother, but according to Desi jr. they, or at least he, was very close to the nanny. They had two grandmothers - Dede and Lolita but it sounds like Lolita never learned to speak English and the children never learned to speak Spanish. In one of the interviews - with Lucie Arnaz and Desi jr. Their mother was pestering Desi to teach the kids Spanish,. (They learned 3 words and that was it!) I felt both Desi's parents were ego centric - coming from status in Cuba they did not seem to grow at all when they came to the the US. Lolita was cared for by Desi to the day he died; his mother lived a few years after him - he left money in his will for her. I think that Desi's problems had a lot to do with the nature of his parents - they wanted and expected from him - he had to be the giver. While neither Lucille Ball or Desi Arnaz talked about it, in the documentaries about the couple - Desi's parents were talked about a bit and it was clear that the people around felt that Desi's parents were takers, not givers. While Lucille took care of her mgf and mother till they died - both gave back to her and esp. Dee Dee, her mother, was there for her grandchildren and for Lucy herself.

Actually Desi had the same spoiled upbringing as his parents, but learned when he got to Miami that he had to get in there and accomplish something. However he was only 16 - still going to high school. His father divorced his mother and Desi became her caretaker, till the day he died. Any time I saw pictures of them together, she looked like she felt Desi was her husband and not her son. Even when he gave her a nice house, great car, etc and always financially took care of her - it was never enough. His father, it was implied by people in the Arnaz circle that his father did not want his son to be more important than he had been. Yuck - these two had feelings of such entitlement till they died. I wondered if Desi's addictions had much to do with that: not only losing Cuba his homeland due to the Revolution, but losing his status as a son - as both parents leaned on him.

    1. I take whatever Lucie Arnaz says, with a with a grain of salt since whenever you watch her being interviewed about her mom, she always has resentments towards her, never once did she say "I love you mom," it's always "We love Lucy" or "I love Lucy like you" but with her dad or for that matter, stepmother, it's a whole other thing. I've had people telling me they see it too, her body language, her tone of speech and her words tell this very clear. Lucie seems to accept her father's behavior and forgive him for everything, much more than her mom.
    2. Lucy didn't want to marry Garry, as she tells in her book, it was her mother who had told her to not let this guy slip away. It was after Lucy asked Garry if it will be alright if people will start calling him Mr Ball (since it happened with Desi and he went bananas) that Garry said yes (in other words,) that she agreed to marry him.
    3. Garry was on the golf course all day long, every day and once Lucy had passed away, a few years later he married a pro golfer. I think... well, do the math.
    4. She made a mistake by marrying him. It's not the book that made me think Garry was fishy, the book just strengthened my thoughts about him. (Watch him being interviewed by Joan Rivers.)
    5. Lucie's name was given to her by Desi. Lucy wanted to name her Susan.
    6. I once watched an interview with Lucy, where she said she wanted to die by the time she reaches 80.
    7. Life With Lucy is on UA-cam, I've watched all episodes
It's been a year since I've gotten to know Lucy and Desi, since then I've been reading, listening and watching a lot of material about them. Truly heart breaking story.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. There are many interviews in existence, especially the last interview with Barbara Walters, where Lucille Ball very clearly indicated that she very much loved Gary and was happy with him. We should take her at her word. She was not the type of person to stay with a man she didn’t love. But I agree that the question of just how much Gary loved Lucy as time went on, is very much in issue. If Lee Tannen is to be believed (and I do believe him), Gary wasn’t deeply in love with her. As for Lucie’s feelings for her Mom, it’s clear that the relationship was complicated. That is not uncommon in mother-daughter relationships. And Lucy could be a difficult person to deal with. Everyone who knew her well said so. Thank you for watching the interview, and for taking the time to post your comments.

I agree with you about Lucie Arnaz - she gives her father a free pass on his issues and complains that no one gave him credit till he died. Lucy always gave Desi credit for his intelligence, gifts and abilities etc. Desi was not just a philanderer he was a serious addict: sex, booze, gambling. When I hear people say it's the Latin way - I think wow what an insult to Latins, if you read up about his sex habits, he had a serious addiction. By the time Lucy divorced Desi (1960) he was in his early 40's and he looked like he was in his 60's - lined, white hair, bloated - addictions were totally in control. Lucie Arnaz complained her mother was a control freak - well she had to run her shows, act in and be a producer. Then Lucy Desi had to buy Desi out cause he was no longer able to run DesiLu - it was losing money. So Lucille had to take over that too, as well as raise two kids. I am sure if Ms Arnaz was married to someone like her father - she would not be as flip about his issues.

@@LJ-ht4zs I'm actually writing about their whole relationship. (been writing for almost a year now including how Lucie called her mom a control freak. I feel both Lucy and Desi missed out each other which makes this whole situation a tragic one. She once said that if they weren't famous, she wouldn't have left Desi even with everything he'd done, not sure how good that is but it just goes to show you she loved him so very much, as well as he loved her, after reading, watching, listening to so many material regarding them. So complicated and a sad ending for both,

There is not a lonelier orphan than a show business failure. Had "Life with Lucy" not been anticipated as the Second Coming (actually Third), it might have done OK. It was not worse than most of the 1986 sitcom fare. I don't think it's so much that comedy had 'moved on' as it was that that type of comedy is very hard to do and no one was around to do it. Yes, there were mistakes. Saddling her with home life with unfunny kids was one. I know 75 year old women and they can be very funny. IMO, the mistake was not surrounding her with conspiring contemporaries.

Go point - I didn't see any of "Life with Lucy"sounds like it was off, she certainly could have a good job with a better script. The critics panned Forever Darling - I liked it a lot - better than Long, Long Trailer. Also panned Mame, which I have seen more than 3x. First time, thought it was good, 2nd time thought it was really good, 3rd thought it was great. Saw Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell, really enjoyed that too. There is only one that movie Ball was in with Bob Hope that I really did not like at all, "Critic's Choice." Both of them said totally agreed that it was awful - they play in 4 movies together.

The Golden Girls & Roseanne made other shows seem "old fashioned" or "silly" in 1986. Nothing you can do about it. "Here's Lucy" (1968-1974) - HAS NOT aged well.

I disagree that Desi Arnaz should’ve gotten the Kennedy Center honors. Lucille Ball deserved it for her life work. Desi was given the opportunity to become a great television producer only because he was married to Lucille Ball and she wanted a project that she could work with him. give Desi credit but Lucille Ball is an entertainment icon that went far beyond her marriage.
They never gave Jerry Lewis the Kennedy Center honors.
