Yooooo I love this episode of the Cyber Nerds. Raven ( in the beginning ) sounded high asf and Sam was himself laughing the whole time ( I liked that ) and Joe with all of the information and being technical and everything was great I loved this episode JOHN WICK 3 IS A DAY ONE.
Not only did they kill his dog, that was the last thing his wife gave to him before she died as a way to leave something for him to love/keep him company in her absence. Then they come and kill the dog AND steal his car that has his last picture of her in it. They did everything to make him have to come get them and he hasn't been able to rest since. Raven is absolutely spot on on this one. Sorry Joe

I especially appreciated that you caught that moment where he climbed up on the guy’s frickin’ shoulder to get a headshot. It’s one of the sickest moments of the trailer, but people often seem to miss it!
Great theories presented about the storyline, as well.
Oh, and on the note of overkill: With the knife scene, the guy was still alive and moving quite a bit, and when John has decided to use lethal force (in the beginning sequence of the second film, he actually refrained), he’s thorough about it, so it makes sense he kept throwing the knives. He generally doesn’t do that cliché movie thing of just injuring the opponents some so they can pop back up and try to kill him again! I see that happen so much in movies, and it’s frustrating as heck. Indeed, that’s actually one of the things people have loved about this franchise-if people are willing to off him, he’s willing to take care of business and not leave himself so vulnerable.
But I do agree with you about unloading the clip in the guy’s face (though the man was wearing a helmet, so that may have been part of why John went so hard). Another commenter noted that moment, and said it showed the growing rage there. John normally just sticks to double and triple taps to ensure the kill.
But we’ve seen his frustration grow as he keeps getting pulled back into the life he’s trying to leave, and there were some distinct moments this became apparent, like in the second film when he was visiting the banking/pawn shop where stuff was stashed, plus what happened at the very end of that movie, where he was just like, “Screw this!” and chose to do what needed to be done to prevent disaster at Santino’s hands, rules be darned.
And remember, he’s been going at an ever faster and more relentless and merciless pace over time-the second film began about five days after the end of the first, and it appears this third one is starting less than an hour after the end of the second. And keep in mind, the first film started the day of Helen’s funeral, and the inciting incidents happened within 48 hours of that, from what I can tell, and the events of the second movie within two weeks of that.
So basically, the entirety of the first and second films probably happened in less than two weeks. So the man buried his wife, lost the puppy that was her last gift to him, and has been beaten, shot, stabbed, and had to relentlessly fight for survival against ever increasing odds. He’s desperate, he’s worn out, he’s cornered, and he’s bloody ticked off!
Besides the emotional aspects, another reason for the overkill may be that he knows he has even less margin for error because of the increased opposition plus his own weakened condition. There never has been much margin for error anyways, but now he’s making sure his opponents are obliterated. Though it probably does lean more towards the emotional aspect, since that does use up quite a bit of ammo and I’m honestly concerned about his running out at that rate! XD
You may also be right about his sending a message here, as well. That definitely could help explain the overkill. Heck, people really should’ve gotten the message by now to stop screwing with the guy-indeed, he was already an established legend before the events of the first film!-but they are still going after him! Maybe finding bodies with seven rounds to the face will help make the point clearer for them. 😇

She was the worst bond girl of all time, though. Might not have been her fault (the script and direction was horrendous), but it's not like she gave a good performance either.

Raven is right about the anti-hero debate. During the time period of these movies, John is an anti-hero. Look up the definition and/or some examples of an anti-hero. John fits that mold.

[Buckle up, peeps-this is gonna be a bit extensive, teehee! Might even post this as a blog entry, hmm...]
Okay, so I’ll use some of what I wrote in another comment for this. To start off, my vote is most definitely for antihero rather than villain. First off, consider what the man actually went through:
When it comes to story, I actually really loved the way they anchored the story to Helen and then the puppy. And one of the biggest misconceptions people have is that it was solely about the puppy. That was part of it, but losing Daisy was basically the straw that broke the camel’s back. Within 48 hours of burying his wife by my estimation, the woman who was the love and center of his life and the reason he left his old world-and at a very high cost!-this man who’s very isolated has his home broken into and vandalized, is beaten unconscious, has his car stolen (a beloved car that also contains a precious memento from Helen!), has an SUV that most likely was Helen’s wrecked, and brutally and needlessly loses Daisy. Daisy was not only a final gift from and tie to Helen, she was also something that gave him comfort and also a reason to keep living, and to not shut down. It’s hinted in the movie-and clearly expressed in the original screenplay-that he was downright suicidal after losing his wife. He’s also socially isolated-all the people we see at the funeral, not counting Marcus, are Helen’s family and/or friends. It seems that most of the people he knows are ones from the life he’s left behind.
So that puppy really represented a great deal for him, as far as getting himself through grief and depression and being able to mentally recover rather than either offing himself or spending the rest of his life numb and disconnected from the trauma of loss. And Helen meant for Daisy to be a start, in that regards, not an end.
That’s an extreme level of provocation for anyone, no? The loss of a loved one by itself-and of course marriage is an especially close and meaningful relationship when done right-is a major and lasting trauma for people, and some never really recover. But on top of that, when he’s in the midst of his very, very raw, recent, immediate grief, he has to deal with all these other horrible experiences.
He hit his breaking point. And one thing that subtly continues is that he’s losing the precious mementos that tie him to her. In the second film, he loses not only many of the physical possessions from the house, but also has the phone holding those videos broken! (It happens during a fight with Cassian.)
He also continues to lose other people he cares about as the storyline progresses.
And the whole thing is, he really only ever wanted to kill the three guys who attacked him: Iosef, Gregory, and Victor.
The other people were killed because they either got in his way, tried to attack him first, or killed people he cared about.
And he kept giving people chances. He took Viggo’s call, and listened for a while until it became clear he was just doing this whole politician-like spiel. And even after that, and after the stuff Viggo did, he gave Viggo second and third chances, rather than pursuing a grudge against him.
Also, the first people we see John kill are the members of a bloody hit squad sent to his house!
And if you pay attention, throughout the franchise you’ll see him give various people a chance to surrender or back off, rather than immediately killing them-and these are often people who’ve tried to kill him!
He’s not as bloodthirsty as people think. And I’ve noticed the ones he tends to off immediately are the random foot soldiers who are either protecting his targets or actively pursuing John. And my guess here is that he knows those guys have zero change of being talked down or reasoned with, so he just takes them down immediately for his own safety.
Now the question of his past career is a major and interesting one, and even what we see in the present ties into that. The filmmakers knew they had to have targets where John could have this high body count without being seen as a monster by the audience, so the targets had to generally be people we wouldn’t be inclined to cry for. So the people we’ve seen him off-both the named characters and the unnamed extras-have been members of the Russian and Italian mobs.
And a key concept explained by the filmmakers also helps shed light on this. They were explaining the agreement in place between the Underworld and the law enforcement. (This explains the interactions with that one cop we keep seeing, Jimmy.)
The basic deal they have is that as long as they don’t harm civilians and law enforcement, the Underworld members are basically free to take care of business amongst themselves. That basically explains the world and parameters that John works within. He is essentially a hitman being hired by criminals to take out OTHER criminals. And the police, as a result, don’t give a darn!
It’s certainly arguable on an individual basis who did and didn’t deserve it, and one thing communicated by the crew and even characters is that Wick does end up being haunted by the consequences of his past actions, and it sounds like his karma is definitely out of balance. And there’s been this subtle thread about redemption and absolution and consequences throughout the storyline, and that’s been mentioned by the filmmakers, as well.
But overall, the deal is that John targets bad guys, not only doesn’t target innocents but also avoids harming them as collateral damage (heck, watch him in the subway scene and he’s even conscientious and bloody POLITE about weaving through the crowd rather than plowing through them and knocking people over like some protagonists would!), AND he even shows mercy and compassion towards the bad guys on numerous occasions.
And consider Iosef as an example of one of the people John ends up offing. When we meet Iosef, he’s just finished an errand on behalf of his father, and it’s made clear that the Iosef killed the people he was sent to “deal with.” So he’s certainly a killer. But then, so is John, right? I’ll even grant that it was likely the people Iosef eliminated were also mobsters or associates of them.
BUT, it goes much further than that. All John does is calmly and politely refuse to sell his car. He did nothing wrong there.
And Iosef’s response is to then break into the man’s house, trash items in the house, vandalize the silver SUV, steal the Charger, beat John unconscious, and beat Daisy to death. The boy BEAT A PUPPY TO DEATH! And it’s not like Daisy was attacking them or anything, though she would’ve been justified in doing so! Nope, they killed her simply because she was barking.
Ya know, animal abuse can be a warning sign that gives an early hint of people who are on the psychopathic/sociopathic spectrum. Like serial killers, as an extreme example.
Even aside from that, the acts and especially the bit about Daisy show what a cruel, twisted, sadistic, vicious guy this brat is. (Heck, the formal descriptions written for the movie, like the ITunes write-up, even use that terminology: they describe the trio as “sadistic young thugs” who “senselessly attack” John.)
And keep in mind that A. Iosef OUGHT to have known who John was, and that B. John had paid a very high price to retire in the first place, and was supposed to be off-limits.
Of course, what the trio did was horrible and cruel and would’ve been wrong-indeed, arguably worse-if it had just been a random, defenseless civilian as the victim. Which was what they intended!
So, there’s a ton of factors here.
John is definitely not your typical/classic vigilante type. Much as a bounty hunter-just on the deadly, Old West kind of spectrum-he works for profit, and not necessarily for the public service as his main focus. BUT...I think it’s very deliberate and significant where and how he’s chosen to work. He only pursues a select group/category of people, and doesn’t just go after any random person as long as you’ll pay him, as other assassins might. The things we’ve seen about him as a person and him as an assassin indicate he does have a stronger moral code than that, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he chose to go into the business of taking out criminals and refraining from harming innocent civilians and LEOs.
Funnily enough, Dominic Rouhani, the central male character of the novel trilogy I’m currently writing, which I began years before even hearing of John Wick, follows a very similar concept: he is a paid assassin, but the catch is that he’s very particular about whom he takes out-he only goes after people he feels truly deserve death (or whatever penalty he’s hired to exact), like predators, traffickers, murderers of innocent people, etc.
It’s definitely a very gray and sticky sort of thing morally, and both do face negative consequences for their iffy choices, but I definitely don’t see either character as being a villain or a monster, and I can strongly root for each.
And another thing evident with both is that they’re not on the sadistic or cruel side, and they don’t seem to take some kind of twisted pleasure in killing for its own sake. Indeed, both actually show various levels of reluctance and restraint in that area instead.

I never seen somebody so self-righteous on anti-heroes in my life, just because they kill bad guys. Captain America has killed more bad guys than anybody in Avengers, period. Pepper Potts killed 2 of the 3 Iron Man villains. So just because they don't beat somebody to near death then take them to jail like Batman and Daredevil, they are a "villain?" Yeah ok, sure.
