My mother passed down my grandfather’s 1952 Longines to me last year for my 40th birthday… My grandmother gifted it to him on their engagement, Christmas 1952 and had it engraved. Small, rectangular, gold filled… I had it serviced and it’s perfect for me to fit that vintage dress niche. It even has his cigarette residue on the dial! RIP Pop Pop!
I got the seiko tank and I'm so happy. now I'm not sure if I ever wanted an actual cartier tank 🫢 I probably still do, twenty years from now lol. seiko has so many varieties of tank in the name of exeline line. I got the seiko SWR054 although I was looking for SUP250 but it seems obsolete! solar movement is hard to find (for seiko) but I'm still happy with my quartz 😄
One Tank is never enough in my book so I have a Louis, a Divan, an Americaine, a MC, a Francais and a Solarbeat. I wish I bought a Basculante before the prices shot off skywards but perhaps one day.
The Dolce Vita from Longines (mentioned in the video) is a great alternative to the Tank. While not as prestigious, Longines makes some beautiful watches at great prices.
I used to own a Longines Dolce Vita as an alternative to a Cartier Tank. The reason I dismissed the Tank at my AD at first was my conclusion that the dial was so ordinary for the asking price. The Dolce Vita offered more, especially with the guilloche dial for much less. Turns out that months later I sold the Dolce Vita and purchased a Tank. Why? The Tank, although plain looking, had the right dimensions and complemented my fashion sense. I’ve had it eight months now and have never looked back.
You just made me feel good. Many years ago i paid $600 for 3 Omega dress watches, including a tiny ladies automatic from the 60s, a ladies round quartz from the 80s and a Tank homage quartz in blingy gold plate. I kept the Omega Tank for myself and love wearing it from time to time, always makes me smile. So yes, would love a real deal Tank but my cheapo Omega would sit well in your video today. Nice job Tom.
It's worth noting that if you want to purchase a Cartier Tank Must AND you want a mechanical movement, you can go with the WSTA0040 specifically the XL version, which not only is significantly more affordable than the Tank Louis Cartier, but also adds a date complication at 6 o'clock 😃 I own one, and I absolutely love it 👍 so much so that I made a whole video on it!
@@bax4562 Well, it is one of the most important products that the maison ever made and was a breath of fresh air for Cartier in the late 70s. That fresh breeze lives on until today and I happly keep a couple Vermeils in my collection along with a Tank Extra Plate, so there you go;)
You mentioned the Santos but shoutout to the Santos Dumont in particular as it's on the leather bracelet, making it a bit more analogous to the stereotypical Tanks. It's my personal 'square grail' (yes I'm allowed to make up arbitrary categories for grails to justify getting them all)
Bought my daughter a Tank to commemorate her starting work in the watch industry. She loves its elegance and simple lines. It makes me think of grabbing a blue dial Tank MC
Love the comment about dress watches being about self expression. I especially love the Longines Dolce Vita (Quartz) on a red leather strap. It has a lovely guilloché pattern on its dial and it is neither too big or small for most wrists. To top it all off, it is priced relatively reasonably for almost any regular person.
Great tutorial. The primary issue behind the secondary market for Cartier Tanks, and this is the same for all luxury watchmakers, is speculation and trading among collectors and dealers. Consider it akin to a stock market for watches. The market has become a system to buy low and sell high, versus sell the watch to a buyer/custodian that will actually use, or enjoy the timepiece. It's frustrating because certain model pricing have gone beyond what is even reasonable for the watch. Look at the Basculante; what a joke that is. Indeed rare, but some for $40k. Ridiculous.
I recently added a manual Must (1979) as well, easily my new favorite. It looked a bit rough when received it but a touch of silver polish and it came up beautifully. Enjoy yours as i do mine.
As for competition, I would love to have a classic Cintree, but get put off by the price. But they are very different, as they are much bigger. The Ceinture und Christallor look great, but as you mentioned, the Ceinture is reasonably priced, but not the Christallor. Aside from that, I love my Tank LC. I would have preferred an ultrathin LC, which I couldn‘t find. The size of the watch depends of course on a person‘s taste. I have a Cartier Tank manual WGTA 0011, which is not too small. I also have a Reverso Duoface, which is a great watch. Both handwound versions (the Reverso in steel, the Tank LC in rosegold) retail new around 14K. But both are very different. The Reverso Duoface is much thicker and harder to get under a cuff. I wear both during the summer, even if I have to replace the strap more often. I have replaced the Cartier pin buckle with a folding clasp. For me, once I was used to a folding clasp, I wouldn‘t have it other ways. Great video. Enjoy your watches.
Recently in Vegas I was able to try on about 5 versions of the Tank. I ended up buying the Reverso Duoface. So IMO the Reverso is the most serious competitor of the Tank. For me, it came down to the perceived greater versatility of the Reverso. I essentially got two watches which I use as a dual time when traveling. While I don’t buy into the “story” that the Reverso is a “sport watch”, it does go further for me towards that sport spectrum than the Tank. Finally, the horological history of JLC made it irresistible.
100%. Reverso Duo was on my short list vs Tank, tried on at AD n loved it. Hesitated, then the excessive JLC price bumps. Now on hold till can find better deal used. That Duo, in so many different faces, is a stunner. Good on you.
For those who like the vintage cintrée (and the re-edition), there is a sleeper in the tank americaine family, the ref 1720 (medium size, quartz). Both bring a similar feeling on the wrist thanks to the dimensions (23x45x6 mm for the cintrée, 23x41x6 for the americaine) and to the curvature of the caseback, which unfortunately disappeared with the following references of the medium size quartz. I even wonder if the similarity to the cintrée is the reason why this size was not re-introduced in the current americaine collection
I have a problem alternating a small watch like the tank with for instance my Zenith Chronomadter Revival. Like you said it’s difficult to get used to bigger watches. And it’s a pity because I love the El primero!
As a vintage Accutron collector, what better homage for me than the '70's Accutron with 2210 tuning fork movement model I recently picked up. Mimics a Normale very well, case and Roman Numerals, and has the 440hz "hum" of the smallest tuning fork movement Bulova made.
I owned a Reverso TT1931 in the boutique only Rouge dial color for close to 10 years. But o never wore it and so I sold it. I now have a limited production Tank Louis with the Mosiac dial, which is perfect on my 7 inch wrist and which my wife is trying to “borrow” all the time
Great alternative to Tank is Hermes Cape Cod TGM automatic with Vaucher movement. Interesting iconic design, great leather straps and second hand retail only about 1/3 of retail. I think they are great value.
OUTSTANDING video explains the GOD Tier of ALL watches - TYVM. I have the Tank XL, Santos Carree #2960, and Ballon. I wear my Tank on a regular basis, sometimes as a daily wear.
Unfortunately Cartier decided to make their Tanks out of rose gold. I like the Tank mini which is made of yellow gold, but it is a quartz watch, and I prefer a mechanical watch. Who knows, maybe they’ll make a yellow gold mechanical Tank mini in the future as well. Great video by the way.
I just bout a gold-plated tank with quartz movement by Herbelin. It’s a French family-owned watchmaker that does all it’s assembly and quality control in house. Well crafted watch that is a great cartier alternative for under 500 euros.
Hi , I have scratched the itch for Cartier Tank with an Omega Deville Pave D'or 26x31mm mechanical , Roamer Standard and Jaquet Droz Tank beautiful watches and still more cheaper than a Cartier Must all combined .
I have a vintage gold tank Francais, a ballon blue and a tank Louis. Recently I bought the new, 2023 tank Francais. I think Cartier watches are irresistible.
My favourite (as best fit on my wrists) was the tank MC but recently I tried the classical tank with the bracelet and looked better (I think we have a sinner). But my first choice for this type of case is JLC duo face. Another personal favourite is the GP.
My darling husband gave me a lovely 1960s square gold watch with a brown lizard strap that I wear similar to a tank. It’s by Germinal Voltaire, a Swiss company that was in business from the 1800s to the 1960s. This was one of their last pieces. Every time I wear it people comment on my watch. It isn’t my most expensive watch but it is definitely the most commented on.
As a watch collectionner that have a Tank and a Santos, old ones, I could witness that small watches could make a big effect. Size does matter for elegant watches.
I bought a Mickey Mouse Lorus 1990s watch that has the Cartier tank watch shape and style and I love it! Elegant and quirky at the same time. I had a Tissot with the same style that I enjoyed.
That one is from Clockwork Synergy. They're one of the only brands to offer gold(plated) buckles, but the colors online don't exactly match what comes in the mail.
The coolest tank shape is undoubtedly the Cartier Tank Americaine Chronoflex. My favourite iteration is yellow gold on a brown alligator strap. But honestly they are as beautiful. Competition yeah it’s the JLC Reverso very very refined elegant watch.
I always wanted to have Cartier Tank, but Is it worth it to get tank must now? I mean now they use faux leather strap, and im not paying that amount of money if it’s not genuine leather 😅✌️
My Favorite was the silver tank that came with a blue band, it was only $800.00. I Think it may have been in the 1980’s or early 1990’? Do know which one that is called?
The Tank Louis is the best Cartier, and stiffest competition is the Reverso. One of them will be my next watch, in rose gold. I had a steel Reverso, but had to sell it due to poor fit. Lovers of rectangular watches be warned, be very careful with fit. It’s not as easy as a round watch.
6:20 hard disagree. I have a vintage Must de Cartier with the inner tri-color gold rectangle dial and it's more stunning than the modern models. The gold plating has also held up very well. Not to mention that the watch's case is made out of a precious metal, as opposed to being steel.
