Coastwatch follows Fishery Officers from The Ministry for Primary Industries, NZ Airforce and Navy personnel, and the Maritime Police. Greenstone gets up close and personal to find out what’s involved in patrolling and enforcing the law that protects our coastlines, water-ways and billion dollar Kai-moana industries.
We also follow the men and women volunteering for Northland Regions Coastguard, and the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter. Tasked with responding to mayday calls, medical emergencies, on-water breakdowns and accidents, they keep our waterways, and those on them, safe. The Maritime Police, along with the Police National Dive Squad, are also on high alert for any maritime emergencies.

Take away their cars, fine them thousands and send them to court for a conviction. That will start stopping these damn poachers!

These people make me sick! The fines are too low, you must charge these scumbags an appropriate amount so they feel the pain!

Needs some tougher fines. Should lose their vehicles too. NZ has enough poachers already, it's frustrating when people arrive from other countries and don't follow the rules either.

The disrespect to act like that in a country that is kind enough to allow you to visit is unbelievable, they should be on the first plane back to their own country so they can continue to destroy that. Maybe a closer look at where the paua live might help...

I lived by a river that was full of cobbler similar to your ells ,the along came scum like this lot , they fished them to extinction in 12 months, chuck em in jail for being greedy ,fines won't stop them they will be selling the catch

Good reason to know your math when doing a job like this. In America the officers do not know how to count or subtract, which means that all of these guys would get away without penalty 😂

They look similar to Australian Abalone.

Yip, they are the same in a lot of ways, only real difference is our paua are black meat and the bull kelp they eat creates different colours in the shell. I lived in kaikoura and its heartbreaking to see our precious taonga(treasure) being stripped away. If they were starving i would try to understand, id help them find legal ones, but this is about greed.

But if you're stealing and caught in the act and you happen to be in the vicinity of the same stolen goods then its reasonable to assume that you stole the goods. They were busted lying soo fair enough to assume they put it there

💕Do people need to purchase a legal permit to collect Paua💕Bit like a passport with photo ID which they must carry at all times when collecting paua which can be stamped on site & photographs taken as backup💕This way multiple offenders can serve a prison sentence as a deterrent💕
