- PJ Proby's recording of Cry Baby released in 1968 on the LP "Believe It Or Not".
Written by Bert Russell Berns and Jerry Ragovoy. Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters' version was a #4 U.S. hit in 1963. Recorded as well by Janis Joplin it was posthumously released on her 1971 album "Pearl".
For me this whole album was criminally ignored. It was very consistent unlike a lot of artists at the time. Great arrangements and sang wonderfully and passionately, as ever by Mr Proby. Classic !

@strandwolf. I see that B.B. was a famous song writer & producer. How can Proby compete with him? Proby was an absolute top 60's singer & 45 years later is still touring & making records.
They have one thing in common:songwriting.
@rontenn Thanks for checking that out. Thing is, Berns is not famous, but his contributions to soul music are immense. I am a fan of Proby, don't get me wrong. The Garnet Mimms take on Cry Baby is just towering, though. Clearly PJ thought highly of it. So did Janis. She gave it her all, went ballistic on it.
@strandwolf I'm glad I checked Bert Berns out.So nice to exchange views with someone on UA-cam who has manners & common sense. I'm forever locked in a war of words with anti Proby guys who absolutely hate him & I admit I do lose my rag with them because they are so unneccessarily unfair & nasty to him.
@brandzee Did you ever watch an Elvis film where he attempted to dance....very poor BUT it's the voice that mattered.Same goes for Proby!

@brandzee Most Elvis fans love P.J. too. The few that don't are just pissed off with the fact that in 2011 P.J. is still with us but Elvis isn't! As for James Brown.....most of his fans are black,understandable. Most whites find him laughable! Brown the Clown!
Sorry to hear no one likes Proby, thats your loss, I for one think yes, he was a copier, he went ott. But sometimes he made those songs well and truly he's own. Every version of Maria or somewhere is pale in comparison to Proby's. Mind you Tom Jones does a great version of covering all of Proby's work more often than not in a paler fashion. I like Tom but he did cover everything Proby did.

I like what he did with Staggerlee and Good Rockin' Tonight. Yeah here the mix is fucked up and the tempo ragged. You're talking about competing with Garnet Mimms AND Bert Berns. That would be laughable--ain't no such possibility. So, yeah, this is a dud. I mean, they tried. Background chorus is righteous, though. Wonder where that came from.

@CategoryStomper. Failing voice!?? If anything failing it's your brain. Proby is one of the very few "older" singers whose voice is still top class! Jones,Cliff Richard,Manilow,Williams,Humperdinck.....the list is endless of singers who should have retired years ago 'cos they can't cut it anymore!!
You're in fantasy-land about a Proby hair transplant but Jones' giant hooter being straightened & made smaller is fact! Singing-wise Proby is a class or two higher!
