Building a bathroom on a narrowboat - Boating On A Budget

- Arguably the MOST IMPORTANT room on the boat - and the smallest and trickiest to work in (and film in!) - is the bathroom. Today we start the task of lining it with wet wall and installing the shower... It was all going to plan and then a supply problem with one of the parts threw a spanner in the works... But hey no one said building a boat would be easy or straightforward!
Here's a bit about us and our boats...
In August 2019 we bought narrowboat - a 1980s Springer that's 36ft long and had previously been sunk twice prior to us purchasing it! It's engine was rather poorly so we took it out and fitted a DIY self build Electric Drive system - which we recorded and made vlogs about (available to view on UA-cam).
Move forward a year from buying that boat and we were loving life on the water so much we wanted a bigger boat so we could move aboard full time.
So we bought 'Lyanda Lady' a 50ft boat that needed a LOT of work. This series is following us stripping the boat right back to a basic shell. It will then be time to completely re build the boat before moving aboard.
Just to add to the fun I'm a Tight Yorkshireman, and we are working with a small budget - hence Boating On A Budget!
Come along and join us on what promises to be a epic adventure!

Got to say the bathroom is looking really nice, love the sky blue, well done on a cracking job
Thankyou!
Hearing you say stained reminded me of a pair of trousers l used to have years ago.
🤣🤣🤣
Great job Peter. Looks spot on. Nice workmanship 👍
Thanks 👍
We like it... and its got lots of nice feedback from viewers aswell...
Looking great. Rustic charm
Thankyou!
Nice one Pete, totally agree about varnished ply it just don’t look quite right 👍🏼 looking good so far my friend 😊👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
Just found your channel and subscribed. Great vlog. South Carolina USA
Glad you've found us and like what you see!
Top man Peter looking good pal.
Cheers!
Nice ! I was not sure about painting the back wall. I would have paneled it like the side walls BUT having seen it even just in primer I like it :)
Looking ok isn't it! 😁
You are doing a great job. Can’t wait to see it all working and Dawn working in her new kitchen.
I can't wait to see Dawn cooking a full Sunday dinner in her new kitchen! 😋😋😋
Love the progress, we should be doing our finishing touches, but ours was just a quick decoration and new sink. We dare not move the existing shower 👍
Go on put your brave pants on and give it a go! 😁
@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget well Paul's also a tight Yorkshire man, from Sheffield purchasing a new sink and shower would give him a panic attack
Your getting there Peter, your a cut above the rest !
Thankyou!
Looks great. Come along way. Nice
Thankyou!
Decided against pebble dash then ! Nice job Peter the Paneler.
Hahaha! Yes!
Looking really good guys. Top job
Thankyou.
nice job looks brill ,,,,i learning lots ,,cheers
That's great!
Bathroom paint colour does look good with the panelling. When you mentioned painting it, I thought, light gray or similar. Sky Blue was bob on.
I was thinking a beige - it was Dawn who suggested sky blue.. and it does look good!
Nice one peter I wouldve like to have seen how you managed to get the angle right on the shower wall boards it looked like you managed to get a good tight fit , cheers great job well done
Yeah it was just difficult to film in there - so will show the technique etc when we come to do the boards in the living room. 😁
Another cracking video, I look forward to the next one.
Thankyou! I must admit watching it back I forgot to do the last part of editing. There should have been voice overs some of the time I was cutting and whilst sat having my brew!
Normal service will resume next week though!
Actually I thought it was quite good that bit, a nice brew and some philosophical contemplation.
@@davidmilner9722 maybe it was a genius moment on my part then... Without realising it!
Looks great 😊 I am a little confused won't the painted wall get damaged by the water? Maybe I missed something? Tell Dawn she was missed. I hope you plan to show us when you fiberglass the shower tray. I honestly enjoyed watching you and Dawn work together. Have a great week 😊
Yes we will show fibreglassing the shower tray.
Just a pity Dawn has to work more days than me or we could always work together...
The paint is bathroom paint so should be moisture proof. Time will tell though I guess!
@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget Thank you, I didn't realize they had paint that was water resistant.
Yes I too have misgivings about using plywood for shower walls even if varnished . IMO water inevitably will find a way eventually through a timber structure. I shall be converting a tiny WC cabin into a shower wet room using fibreglass shower tray and walls of the thin light weight board specifically designed for showers and bathrooms .
It's nice to see your progress. Frustrating sometimes isn't it waiting for parts. Just had a new fire delivered at home, waited 5 months for it, and when we unpacked it one of the legs was broken off. Your boat is looking good and we can all see how patient you are its not easy fitting large sheets in a confined space. Keep up the good work and again thanks for sharing with us.
Ah broken deliveries are a pain aswell! It wasnt the easiest of tasks getting those boards in place!
Well done, very accurate, by no means an easy job. I wonder if a ticking stick might be a good solution?
Similar sort of way I did it, I will show more when I do the stuff in the living room - Which is easier to film!
The workmanship and creativity is top notch but I worry that it's going to be a bit of a palaver to wipe down after a shower.
I guess no matter what we do or use there's always going to be cleaning up... 🤔
Smart!
Thankyou!
That's a really interesting pattern / shade on that wet wall Peter - does is have a description / name ? And what is it actually made of ? Cheers for another informative & enjoyable video - I even enjoyed the bit where you were just sitting down enjoying your brew !!
It is made from plastic and it was called something simple like 'copper sheet'... glad you enjoyed it... :)
You didn’t mention if the plywood was WPB marine grade or something else?
Great job, Peter! I really like the blue, but I also love all your woodwork, so either way it's going to be beautiful. Are you planning to use a shower curtain or put in some type of 'wall' around the shower itself? All the best from Missouri.
We are still deciding whether to go curtain or screen... 🤔
I'd strongly recommend putting in an enclosure - in a small space curtains stick onto the showeree (if that's a word) and can push out of the tray dumping water over the floor.
hi peter how are you going to waterproof the back boards in front of window in bathroom
hi the plywood same glue as marine ply paint the ply with epoxy resin make waterproof use compass inscribing circles the place need more glass was the join not the middy of patch and lap was to small
How did the rest of your fibreglassing go? Did I miss the story about insulation on the boat? The bathroom is looking good.
Next week we are doing a full round up of all the works etc we have done so far... Will cover those aspects in that...
@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget ok. When I saw you sitting about for a while I was expecting Dawn to appear and badger you back to work..
@@brianinbrisbane6632 to be honest I intended 'voicing over' that bit to say Dawn had better not catche sat down... But I forgot to add it before uploading! 🙄
what of the moving the to bots to same place ?
What is the material for the toilet wall ?
Are you using marine ply for the floor??
No it isn't marine ply, waterproof exterior grade ply (cant remember the exact spec - but it was a grade that was recomended).
My wife and I are a little disappointed, because we wanted to see you finish up the fiberglass seam between the two halves. Did you film that or were you too busy actually fiberglassing?
No they didn’t film that roof bit, I wanted to see that too lol.
Sorry, we didn't film that as we'd already filmed the other repairs and it was exactly the same procedure so we didn't think people would want to see us repeating ourselves. 🤔
@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget yes all good, I just like to see others working! Lol
Makes me laugh that UA-cam always picks adverts for luxury yachts to show with your videos... Targeted advertising at its best!
Maybe we should try getting sponsorship from one of the yacht sales places! 💷💷💷🤣🤣🤣
The frustration of waiting on suppliers is far too common these days.
Very frustrating!
Shame you didn’t edit all the rather tedious and dull jigsaw cutting .
Bathroom? Do not watch this video. There is no bathroom. It’s a scam. No bathroom,!
