  • Welcome back to The Viall Files: Going Deeper Edition! Today we are joined by Wells Adams and Natalie Joy to talk about Joe and Serena’s wedding, Nick and Natalie’s gender reveal, parenting techniques and chores. We also touch on recent pop culture headlines such as Joe and Sophie’s divorce, Tom Sandoval saving the day, and Bethenny Frankel channeling Oprah and Diane Sawyer during her interview with Rachel. We then have a Texting Office Hours caller who successfully slid into a podcaster’s DMs but needs help taking it to the next step - now that they’ve agreed they want to meet up in his city, what’s the best way to do it?
“Is it lonely in your ivory tower of perfection? You’ve never sharted a little bit?”

Totally understand what Nick is saying about wanting to instill a work ethic in his daughter… and you can give kids “chores” at a surprisingly young age. My husband and I follow some Montessori-ish principles and toddlers actually LOVE to help - my 3 y/o started helping me empty the dishwasher somewhere between 18-24m; he also helps wipe up his messes, picks up his toys, helps me cook, turns on the robot vacuum (his favorite “chore”) etc. Letting kids help out around the house (even if it takes longer) really helps to provide them a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Don’t do for them what they can do for themselves. 🙂

As someone who had to figure out household duties on their own as an adult, I fully intend on using the Montessori methods and teaching my children to be independent and capable!

@@Cayliente same! I did my own laundry and occasionally helped vacuum and whatnot when I was a kid, but I pretty much had to figure everything else out when I became an adult. My husband and I have 2 sons and we both feel even more compelled to normalize everyone in the household pitching in (since boys, in general, haven’t always been held to the same standards as girls when it came to domestic duties). My boys will definitely grow up knowing how to cook and clean and garden, etc and they’ll also be exposed to a variety of other tasks, like auto maintenance (changing tires, changing oil, etc), DIY home repair/maintenance/upgrades, etc.

@@piscis31985 Love this! My husband was raised to know how to do all of those things and he’s an amazing cook because his family encouraged his interest in it. So luckily he’s all on board for how I wanna raise kids haha

I think more than chores just helping around the house. My boys are 3 and they know how to help set the table, put their dirty dishes away, they walk the trash bins with me to the street, they help load dishes and laundry, they fold their clothes and help sort and put away, help me cook meals… it’s not about forcing them to do things but to enjoy doing things with you. I have never forced these tasks on my kids but they find enjoyment in helping around the house.

Nick if you look more into the Montessori philosophy, getting kids involved with chores from the very beginning is actually really beneficial to them feeling like helpful and productive parts of the family. Having kids do 'chores' or just learning household things is controversial for some but I think its so beneficial for kids to learn these skills not just for the family but also to be able to do them on their own when they leave home. My son is almost 18 months and he LOVES helping with laundry. He takes clothes out of the dryer and puts them back in. He loves taking his dirty clothes and putting them in the hamper. He also likes trying to help unload the dishwasher. That one is a little harder since there are unsafe things in there. But once they can walk and climb a bit you can get them what is called a learning tower that is basically a stable ladder that they can climb into and be at counter hight so they can watch you cook and eventually help chop things with kid safe knives and what not. So getting them involved in the ways they want to be involved, not as a punishment, but just as a way to teach them and actually practically get stuff done with them around is really helpful and fun. You will soon find it is sometimes impossible to get chores done with a toddler so the more you can get them involved and teach them to clean up their own messes, the better!

Pickle jar (or any jar) - stick a butter knife up the side of the lid and turn it just to break the vacuum seal and the lid twists right off (no hole in lid necessary)

Easiest way to open a jar. You put a butter knife to the SIDES of the you don’t have to stab it. You just loosen the jar lid/ loosen the cap. Works 10000% of the time. You can open it easily once the cap is loosened by the butter knife

To break the seal on a pickle (or any) jar, take a butter knife or something similar and slide it between the lid and glass until an air hole is made. You will hear the pressure release. And then the lid will unscrew easily. Much easier than using all your might to open it. 🙂

  • @GS-ff5dd

Giggling a table knife between the jar glass and the lid, even just a little releases the pressure and makes the lid easier to open. Just a tip if you don't want to stab the lid 😊

Simple “chores” for littles are super easy to implement. Just have them do every day things like brushing their teeth, making their bed, etc. You can do sticker charts to ear prizes if you want or we let our kids pick like a fun place to go. Don’t overthink it! Your kids will be fine. :)

Great show, Wells is always an awesome guest…but PLEASE DO NOT open a jar the way he told you to, lol…THE BEST WAY TO OPEN A JAR (that will not injure you!) is- tap the lid of the jar on the edge of a countertop!! works EVERY time! - just thought I’d share 😉

My 5 year old has a chore board, and gets $1 for each chore. He also has a behavior chart for both discipline and rewards. He knows he can earn toys by either being good, and making "green" choices, and Mom and Dad will buy the toy, or he can earn the money to buy his own toy. We try to instill the value of money with him, so he knows it means something.

Google how to open tight jars. A good way is to use a large wooden spoon and tap the lid all over. Firm fairly strong taps. Opens up after a few taps.
