Good to know they decided to reuse the airport lands as an urban lung for the city. Lord knows the city needs it. It's hot, dusty and rapidly growing... Like Phoenix! Another city with an airport in its downtown that should be closed and rebuilt as a huge urban park if you ask me!
Thank you! We agree, transforming old airport lands into green spaces is a fantastic way to create urban lungs for cities. Phoenix could definitely benefit from a similar approach! 🌳🏙️
That would be amazing! Transforming deserts into greenlands and ensuring clean water for all is a wonderful vision. Projects like King Salman Park are indeed a good start towards achieving a greener future.
I’m from Riyadh and if all desert transformed into greenland I would be very devastated. The desert is huge part of who we are. We love the desert especially in the winter, it’s like an ocean that you can walk on top of it.
Yes I totally understand that the primary motivation is monetary. But still, when you want to get away from oil, build a manhatten, with a huge park, invite all the business in the world, you automatically end up with westernized lifestyle, and this brings liberalisation, also in this park, as a lifestyle, and you gotta just deal with that then and there is no turning back. MBS tries to do this with SA now, but there I learned is much more friction with the local population. Maybe simply because SA has 36M locals and UAE only 1M. A de facto liberalisation thru the back door by a centralized power is interesting, because as westerners we always assume centralized powers as moving towards being less liberal, and not the opposite, albeit for primarily monetary reasons. In a way this is western cultural colonisation thru soft power (= attractiveness of western liberal lifestyle coming piggyback with the business). I doubt this will really work in Riyadh, this frictionless, like it did in Dubai.
Saudi Arabia has every right to spend their money as they please. But this is where your high price of gasoline is going. And im all for the greening of the worlds deserts.
Thank you for sharing your perspective! It's true, Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in various projects, including King Salman Park. These investments are part of their Vision 2030 plan to diversify the economy and improve quality of life. While the high price of gasoline is a concern for many, it's interesting to see the efforts to green the deserts and create sustainable urban spaces.
Oil powers the world, so naturally, it comes at a high price. It's as vital to modern life as oxygen is to survival. At least Saudi Arabia utilizes its own resources, unlike some countries that exploit other nations, particularly in Africa. Saudi Arabia relies on and manages its own natural wealth.
I don't disagree but I am sure it will also be on the Riyadh Metro which will soon be the largest web of automated train lines in the world... But 18K is almost as much as West Edmonton Mall which is the world's largest (and ugliest) parking lot network next to the former largest mall in the world which is only getting a tram station in 2027... Like 46 years after opening... It sadly has 20,000 main stalls with overflow across the street for another 10,000...
Thank you for your comment! That's a great point. Fortunately, King Salman Park will have extensive public transportation options to make it more accessible. They're planning to connect the park with five new metro stations and ten bus rapid transit (BRT) stations. Plus, within the park, they'll have electric shuttles and bike rentals to help reduce the reliance on cars. It's great to see they're thinking about sustainability and ease of access!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! You're right, King Salman Park will be connected to the Riyadh Metro, which is set to become the largest automated metro network in the world. It's great to see such an emphasis on public transportation. However, I agree that 18,000 parking spaces is a lot.
Can't help it.. Saudis (and most Arabs) can afford car, and they prefer travel with cars rather than facing sweltering desert heat at >40 degree celcius and occassional sandstorm.. Besides, they need to travel by car due their sub-urban style housing, because unlike European countries & other major cities, than don't lack these 2 things: LAND & OIL
@@panglimahitam6793 I agree with you. Here’s an example I’m facing today (right now in Muscat, Oman): it’s 43 c but feels like over 50 degrees. How am I supposed to walk outside?? Or even use public transport? (City designing are very different than the ones in Europe or some states in USA). Car is AC’ed and oil is much cheaper than most countries in the world. For this part of the world, like it or not, car is the best way of getting around.
Thank you for your comment! Keeping King Salman Park green in a desert environment is indeed a challenge. The project will utilize advanced irrigation systems, groundwater, and treated wastewater to maintain the greenery. Additionally, there are plans to use cloud seeding to increase rainfall in the area. These combined efforts aim to ensure the park remains lush and vibrant despite the arid climate.
@@silence5014 Yes, yes it is, it's within Mexico City itself and it ain't a natural reserve, it's an urban park built from scratch in the bare land that would've been a massive airport if it didn't get cancelled.
