This was incredibly helpful. Great information, and also just nice to know I'm not alone. Sometimes it seems like everyone else is so well adjusted...I feel like I'm the only one who struggles with a vicious inner critic.

I’ve gotta tell you, the second you said “having an anxiety disorder is NOT YOUR FAULT” and hearing you repeat that line for emphasis, made me burst into tears. I’ve been struggling with some sort of anxiety disorder for about 14 years now, and the last few days have been reallllly rough, on not only myself but my relationship. And I’m finally feeling in a place of momentum and drive to understand myself and seek help because I want to better myself and I also don’t want to lose the things that I have due to this disorder. And even though my partner and my parents have said it a whole bunch, and I do believe them and it has helped, for some reason hearing you say just invoked such an emotional response almost like an epiphany. I’ve been really enjoying your videos and they are really helping me to centre myself and notice my overthinking and insecurity and jealousy and creating scenarios in my head that don’t exist and obsessing over them so that they feel real. I can relate to you so much more than I can do some old lady in a doctors office so thank you so much for all of these videos, I am seeking cbt but these videos are such good exercises for my mental health in addition to the professional help I’m seeking. So thank you

“Some old lady” that’s considered ageism and is rude! Someday you will be old and will want to be thought of with more respect than that.

  • @snowgates8476

My best strategy that is working for me is fighting that irrational thoughts with counter rational arguments.
The more irrational the thought the easier it is to forget about it since it’s easier to debunk.
Anything else won’t work, trying to forget it will only make it stronger and larger as a thought.
However I do feel very bad for those with the actual issue, those that deal with rational thoughts such as the death of a loved one, loss of a job, break up of a relationship, failing an exam or semester etc.

Some of the things you talked about I've learned in DBT. What you said about not using emotion reasoning and only using logic don't support DBT. In that theory practice, I learned "mindfulness". This taught me that we are supposed to use both emotion and logic mind together. Want to know your feedback about this learning style. Thank you for putting out videos that help many people :)

WORDS matter. For example, many years ago a 'friend' said to me that I was wallowing in my grief.
My husband had left. It was a huge shock.
I wish I had been able to stand up for myself but I was already crushed.
Now I would say I am experiencing grief. And experiencing grief is natural. Not wallowing.

That point about no one having chosen depression hit quite hard. Logically, I know that, but there's always that voice in my head (I guess one of those unhelpful thoughts) going: Yeh, well maybe you deserve this... Scott, how do I control my anger when people tailgate me when driving?
There's not always overtaking lanes and people drive so close to me and I feel offended and it ruins my day. It takes a lot out of me to ignore them, but any tips to stop it ruining my day? My mind lingers on it afterwards, I just hate people and their dangerous driving

I would think about it like this. They are most likely stressed to get everything they need to get done in a day, and isn't personal a good portion of the time. They could very well be having a bad day, or maybe there really struggling to be out in the world, and every obstacle feels like a mountain. It's better to say that we're all just human trying to make it through the day, and not take it personal! 😁
