Now, I belong to group of people who weren't scared by this as a kid, just fascinated. I think it's because one of my childhood classics is "The little witch"(mala carodejnice) based on the book of the same name by Otfried Preussler. At the very beginning of it, there also is a witch sabbath scene, and IT ROCKS. The thing that interested me the most, is the wide spreading and variations of the same concept. In the little witch we are on the Blocksberg, celebrating the Valpurgisnight (the movie gives the alternative names of Rock Mountain and Philippus Jacobus night),i.e. the German version of the tale, while in Fantasia we have Chernabog (an old slavic PAGAN deity) on the Bald Mountain, celebrating saint John's Eve, the slavic version. Long story short, werever you go, a witch's Sabbath will always be more interesting than any party you ever threw.
Rewatched this whole film on Disney plus and it's so amazing to think in 1940 they made this with nothing but classical music and imagination. Such an amazing movie.
Outstanding bellissimo. I love to share with people. And am proud to announce I love this song and share it with all my neighbors in this apartment building. Philadelphia USA
Was working while listening to "classical music when you're on a deadline" playlist then I heard this song, then suddenly, the visuals I saw 30 years ago flashed in my head. I had to pause and look this up to watch this again. Seeing this now, my my, what a very dark yet powerful animation. Can't believe this was being made during WWII as well. Amazing! Timeless classic!
This and the Pegasus are my all time favorites. The music, the color, the designs, smooth animation, the stories it all tells together. You don’t need dialogue and therefore can’t spoon feed everything to audience, because you don’t have to or shouldn’t have to. It’s definitely one of the things that’s made a life long lasting impression.
At 1:44 combined with the music, this was such an influential part of my childhood when my fascination for ghosts and spirits from the grave was proverbially awakened. This is the only version of this clip with the proper soundtrack to match the incredibly poignant and creepy vibe this clip exudes. All of the new versions have it where the song has picked up more and is quite frankly not as creepy as how the edit was originally
Honestly though, if they ever wanted to do something experimental again they would push it onto Pixar rather than tackle it themselves. And even Pixar is getting the modern Disney treatment of "make money not art".
Yeah, I’m not putting all that on Disney, you how to people still complain, it’s Star Wars bad but. Let’s just say if you had the balls to against a bunch of sensitive stuff prepare for threats that, ironically aren’t kid friendly.

Man, I sure do miss the times when Disney produced truly unforgettable and artistic works. Fantasia is a true masterpiece that stood the test of time. It has remained one of the most wondrous and awe inspiring experiences I've had watching a film. this scene alone is so memorable it has invoked fear in me, and has definitely stayed with me ever since I saw it as a child.
its amazing how they came up with the images to capture PERFECTLY the nature of this composition. Its like you can't unsee these images if you hear this song again anywhere. Excellent job!!
You know I never realized how much cinematography was in this. Or the intensity of understanding of anatomy. It's been at least 3 years since I've seen fantasia and this makes me wanna go back and watch it again. If I missed this much artistry alone what more could have escaped me?
I like how pure evil this demonic being is... Disney had no problem back then to express faith / religious concepts in their films (Snow White the first Christian princess praying to God to bless the dwarfs, Prince Philip using the sword of truth and the cross of Christ in his shield against Maleficent the mistress of all evil and literally using powers of hell, Bagheera gently quotes scripture as a normal line, The Sword in the Stone referencing "A miracle ordained by heaven" in the sword itself, The Hunchback has religious concepts all the time, Mrs. Potts saying heavenly and thanks the Lord in her words in her songs, etc etc etc etc.) So they literally brought the concept of Satan in their classic hit of sound and color ... a true masterpiece! Yet a controversial at its time as well... This short confronted the Holy and the Profane... the everlasting battle between good vs evil...God vs the devil...Ave Maria’s church bells vs the Chernabog midnight party lol Many will say...”This isn’t the devil/ satan, this is a fake/false god character translation of his name, his name is Chernabog, not satan”... true, his name is Chernabog...but if you watch the original Fantasia, the narrator/orchestra conductor literally gives the backstory of this character by saying how Satan and his followers would dance at night in the mountains ... thus, he is the devil... even Disney animators and staff refer to him as the devil. He is the personification of EVIL, all the Disney villains are influenced and work for him! He does his work in the shadows ... he doesn’t says anything in the short because he doesn’t need to...his presence says it all...HE IS PURE EVIL, you will never find light in him, no love nor compassion, he brings temporal joy to his minions but ultimately destroys them...he is the opposition to good and enjoys making everyone suffer, even his own minions as presented in the short classic ! This short had guts and took risks back then and thus it holds today and is considered the darkest animation in the Disney history!

This, the most impressive piece of animation the Walt Disney Studio every produced up to that point, was only a dozen years after Steamboat Willie!
You should see Fantasia 1999 if you haven't.
@@sarahberkner You bet I have! Saw it in its theatrical run, though not in IMAX since, at the time, there were no IMAX theaters near me.

Why is no one talking about just how beautifully and flawlessly they animated his hands? Im in awe, its so clean and so smooth for the time period.
Supposedly, the hands were modeled by Bela Lugosi.
@@cheezemonkeyeater I actually had to look this up to confirm and it says they modeled the hands after his movements probably, still very cool!
@@grilledcheez08 On the DVD commentary, they had intended to actually have him be a model for Chernobog himself, too, but the head animator ended up really wanting to use himself.
Or something like that, it's been a while since I watched the commentary.
@@cheezemonkeyeater Yeah forsure I actually just watched a vid about it after your comment. Shits interesting as fuck.
This is wonderful! I saw Fantasia as a very young boy and was impressed. Now I am impressed once again.

I loved this as a kid. However, now watching this.. It's honestly very disturbing. With that said, it's very well done. It's a terrifying masterpiece!

This is definitely one of the most, if not THE, disturbing, darkest, and scariest scenes in any Disney film.
What about Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame?
@@superdisney5535that’s pretty dark too a lot of scary scenes in Disney movies are dark not just this one

I wonder why Disney doesn't do things like these anymore. I loved this as a kid!
Same
Because kids apparently can't handle it.
Were in era in which kids grow up with the internet, I think they've seen way scarier.
Money. Even then this movie didn't do well financially speaking. It's no longer about pushing boundries, it's about money.
Because they a bunch of pussies
Because today it would be considered as a nightmare fuel. Maybe.
That image will always be engraved into my head. So haunting yet magical.
I wonder how they got the effect.
A masterpiece of animation. The Disney of today wouldn't have the guts to make something like this.
Honestly though, if they ever wanted to do something experimental again they would push it onto Pixar rather than tackle it themselves. And even Pixar is getting the modern Disney treatment of "make money not art".
@@wierdmr🙄
I mean I don't blame Disney they still get complains from parents because it's to scary
Yeah, I’m not putting all that on Disney, you how to people still complain, it’s Star Wars bad but. Let’s just say if you had the balls to against a bunch of sensitive stuff prepare for threats that, ironically aren’t kid friendly.
This and the firebird suite sequence from Fantasia 2000 (which wasn't that long ago) are the two sequences that stood out to me in the Fantasia films. ua-cam.com/video/3eG_O1wEJ40/v-deo.html

My heart is pounding. I've seen this several time, heard the music several times. It gets me every time.
This scene would not be as amazing as it is if not for the music. Modest Mussorgsky, one of my favorite composers!
I must have been a strange child because I loved watching this when Disney used to play it around Halloween. One of my favorite parts of fantasia too
its amazing how they came up with the images to capture PERFECTLY the nature of this composition.
Disney and Mussorgsky Great combo. I have always loved this one. Thanks for posting it.
Potts saying heavenly and thanks the Lord in her words in her songs, etc etc etc etc.)
So they literally brought the concept of Satan in their classic hit of sound and color ... a true masterpiece! Yet a controversial at its time as well... This short confronted the Holy and the Profane... the everlasting battle between good vs evil...God vs the devil...Ave Maria’s church bells vs the Chernabog midnight party lol
Many will say...”This isn’t the devil/ satan, this is a fake/false god character translation of his name, his name is Chernabog, not satan”... true, his name is Chernabog...but if you watch the original Fantasia, the narrator/orchestra conductor literally gives the backstory of this character by saying how Satan and his followers would dance at night in the mountains ... thus, he is the devil... even Disney animators and staff refer to him as the devil.
If you read illuminati blood lines Disney has a hole chapter talking about thie scene and what it represents
@@dkfaust222 I have read it, fascinating and intriguing ... and scary.
@Elaine Cuenca Find what? The Illuminati or the scene of Fantasia conductor explaining that Chernabog is the Devil?
It's not Satan it's his second in command lol

Damn right. Disney used to be pretty edgy. It hurts that they are even censoring some of their classics, both the rides and animations.

2:26 - Stunning animation!! The fluid way that skeleton horse is running!! Just...wow!
This scared the crap out of me when I first watched this at age 5 but I don’t regret it. Children should be allowed to experience fear because without fear, how can one have the courage to face and overcome it?
Masterpiece!!! Absolutely
Considering this was released in 1940, it has to be one of the boldest, most ambitions and groundbreaking films ever made. It is a work of art, absolutely spectactular.
Never saw this movie until a few years ago when it used to be on Netflix. I really love the music because I’m a HUGE fan of epic music and the animation is superb, especially near the end. But his smile STILL manages to send chills down my spine and not very many things can make me do that
Masterpiece of animation and filmmaking.
I remember watching this in 2nd grade in school right before Halloween and I loved it! That was about 40 years ago and I still love it. 🖤💀
Agreed, this used to scare me. But I now find it interesting. The souls coming from the graveyard are larger and more detailed than the souls coming from the surrounding area. I wonder why that may be.
Films like this had multiple animation teams with different animators and team leads. Because of this some scenes would have an different styles and might not even match perfect continuity with other teams.
This scared me when I was little.
This is what I thought the devil himself would look like and this was his music
I remember watching this on DVD aged 4 years old. For me, this was truly horrifying to watch. Words cannot describe how traumatised I was in my early youth years after watching for the first time...
The ghost on horseback at 2:26 thrusting his sword forward has always stayed with me - he's riding right into Hell, and he's telling his horse "FASTER."
This never escaped my mind. I always remembered it and everything. It was my favorite piece the whole movie.
This still gets to my core to this day, at 38 yrs old😱 I remember beeing terrified (yet highly facinated) at age 10, seeing it now brings the emotions right back😳☠ Truly a masterpiece by Disney, sets so much emotions off.
Most insane Disney media of all time. Fantasia was truly a masterpiece, deffenatly my favorite animated movie.
Hades from that episode of the House of Mouse: "Hey, it's the old act! I love this guy!"
DISNEY cartoons once were good at introducing beautiful classic pieces of music as part of the cartoons. I saw FANTASIA as a young kid and never forgot this piece as well as Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours". I am 80 now and both have stayed in my mind..
Fantasia is one of the most beautiful timeless animated movies ever made. This and the Dinosaur one are my favorite segments.
When I saw this as a kid in the theaters in 1950's Los Angeles i felt ice cold fear of terror run through me. This movie and those damn flying monkeys in "Oz" still creep me out even after pulling ten months combat in the Nam.
Now THAT’S a Halloween party!

¡Qué maravilla!!! Una de mis secuencias favoritas en esta joya impresionante que es FANTASÍA 1940. La vi en el cine varias veces con mi padre.
Really well done for something made during WW2
This is my childhood right here. Love the music and the trippy animations, nostalgia 🙌🏼
Happy 84th Anniversary to one of the greatest movies of all time *FANTASIA!!!* this is probably one of the most badass segments out of the *ENTIRE FILM!!* and it’s also a bit unnerving and spooky as well because I mean come on you are literally seeing *HELL RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES!!!* and I am honestly so shocked that Disney even had the *BALLS* to do this kind of shit back in the 1940’s because there’s no absolutely way that this would be made today for obvious reasons but yeah I just got nothing to say but amazing things about this segment of this film such daunting and evil music, such wicked, bold and jagged animation that suits the music perfectly and Chernabog aka (The Literal Devil himself according to Deems Taylor) has got to be one of the most badass Disney villains of all time to the point where I might even say he’s basically toe to toe with Bill Cipher as one of the best Disney villains of all time he is just the definition of “evil” and his jacked body definitely helps the fact that you should definitely stay from him at all causes I don’t even know what else to say at this point this is legitimately one of the top three best and favorite segments of this film it’s just that bold, striking and badass and I honestly cannot believe that this came from film that’s literally *84 YEARS OLD NOW AS I AM WRITING THIS* which honestly blows my mind every single time I watch and yeah Happy 84th Anniversary to legitimately one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life and this segment is just so badass that words cannot describe on how badass and slightly unnerving this segment of the film was👹⛰️🦇😈👻

As a child I was terrified of this. I used to hide under the table or in a cushion fort while watching this.
I personally never found this scene frightening, even when I was a kid. I thought the animation and music was so amazing, it reminded me of Halloween.
"Bald Mountain, according to tradition, is the gathering place for Satan and his followers."
Based on the music and the fear-inducing animation from this segment alone, they hit the F*CKING mark right on the head.
