@GanEdenAustralia The HF-S200 is a high end AVCHD camcorder. Canon uses similar numbers for each year (200, 300, 400 etc.) but uses different letters to indicate each model line (FS, R, M, S, etc.).
@tweetyrocks818 The ZR900 uses MiniDV tape and the FS200 uses solid state flash memory (SD cards). Otherwise the specifications are very similar between the two. It really depends on which format you are more comfortable working with.
@SebiStudios2 Yes, I'm pretty sure all of Canon's current high-def consumer-grade camcorders have a mic input and headphone jack. Sony has a mic input on their mid-range consumer HD camcorders, and the high-end HD models have a headphone jack as well.
@grod75 The old "lines of resolution" spec only applies to analog video formats, like VHS (240 lines) and Hi8 (400 lines). Nowadays, resolution is expressed as "effective pixels". The FS200 is rated at 450k effective pixels (0.45 megapixels) in 16:9 mode. However, the standard definition video format can only display a maximum of about 346k pixels for NTSC or 415k pixels for PAL, so the quality you see really depends on how well the camera scales its image to fit the video format.
It does not have a screw-on lens thread, so if you want to use a special lens you'd need to glue on an adapter. See the video "canon FS200 fishey mod".
Yes, there is! Push the "Func" button and move up on the joystick until you get to "AWB" (Auto White Balance). Then you can move left and right to select manual white balance modes. Then move up again to get to "P" and then you can move over to "TV" and click on it to choose a manual shutter speed (from 1/8 to 1/2000).
@fortyfiveplayer It should be at least as good as your Xacti in low light, and if you don't mind the slightly choppy motion, the "Auto slow shutter" mode does boost the sensitivity.
I remember using this camera in 2011 to film moped riding. Attached camera to my helmet with L bracket. And I used to tape fish eye lens front of it to get wider angle. Audio was vety good on this camera and the zoom was just amaizing.
This camcorder is quite a bit different from my Canon FS100. It does have some new features such as a headphone output and the direct access to certain functions using the Set button of the joystick, but they have also taken out some things. The FS100 has a full set of playback controls, while this one only has play/pause and stop. The FS100 also has a dedicated Backlight Compensation button wich I think is an important feature.
@RustyRazor2010 Don't forget a mono-to-stereo adapter plug, or else the mic's audio will come out only in the left channel. Radio Shack part number 274-0374, $2.99.
You SHOULD use the hand-strap, for more secure grip on the camera. If you have a tripod, quite apart from the normal use of a tripod, while still attached to your camera, but folded up, the weight of the tripod will help stabilise your shot as you walk while shooting.
@talldude123 A good name-brand Class 4 SDHC card should be sufficient for any camcorder. The Class 4 rating provides a maximum transfer rate of 4 megabytes/second, which equals 32 megabits/second (Mbps). Standard definition camcorders record video at around 8 to 9 Mbps at their highest quality setting, and AVCHD camcorders range from around 18 to 24 Mbps.
The battery life is extremely good. I get almost 3 hours of use out of it before it needs recharging, and you can leave it in the camcorder for weeks and it won't go dead just sitting there, unlike some other camcorders which will run down the battery pretty quickly as long as it is attached, even if the camcorder is turned off.
It has been a common problem with cam-corders that the inbuilt microphone(mono or stereo) always seems to pick up the sound from behind the camera better than that from in front(what the camera's pointed at). And this goes right back to the first generation of VHS & Beta camera/recorders that used the full-size tapes in each format.
Do you know what the hell to do with the .MOD files that this thing records in? I no longer have the software that came with the camera so I am stuck with the odd filetype they record in. Is there a way for you to send the software as a file attachment?
See the video "How to edit/upload from SD camcorders" for free software to losslessly convert MOD files into standard MPEG2 files: ua-cam.com/video/0OTVU3UuAx0/v-deo.html
I was just gonna say download ModPlug tracker but then I realized you mean .MOD MPEG files, not sample/chiptune based music scripts. Never knew that video used the same extension. XD
Simply rename or copy .MOD to .MPG and your are good to go. The .MOD file is a MPEG2 file. Canon, Panasonic and a few others use the .MOD extension so you will use their apps to transfer/edit???
@sanctuary10301 A good quality HD camcorder is too expensive for me, and I would need to buy a new computer too, since my PC is too slow to play or edit AVCHD video. But I did own a cheap pocket-size HD camcorder (a Kodak Zi6) and used it for most of my videos from November 2008 to May 2009. Some of those videos are on UA-cam in HD, but I downscaled most of them to standard definition so I could edit them.
@joeyf504327 Canon also uses the .MOD variation of MPEG2. See my video "How to edit/upload from SD camcorders" for instructions on how to losslessly convert these into standard MPEG2 files using a small free program called SDcopy!
You can attach a lens to the camera with duct or electrical tape. If I recall correctly, 37mm lenses fit this camera. I recommend getting a UV filter. Sunpak sells them.
