Have the whole opera on VHS..... Diaz is perfect for the role, as Domingo....
Bravo Justino Diaz - this is how I envision Iago ever since seeing and hearing this. I first heard of him when I was in college, in the 70s, from his recordings of Mozart Requiem, the Messiah, the C minor Mass. Only later did I realize he was an opera singer. Always loved the color of that voice, but even more that he creates a character with his voice, not just singing notes but putting a meaning in them. Gobbi, Bastianini and a few others could do it too. Today's singers, not so much.
Is this operafilm, by Zeffirelli, avaiable on DVD.....If possible with swedish subtext.....Anyone...?
the sound track IN THE MOVIE SOUNDS 1/2 STEP FLAT DUE TO FAULTY MECHANICAL TRANSFERENCE ....THE ORIGINAL PITCH CAN BE HEARD IN THE CD VERSION ...NO TRANSPOSITION EVER TOOK PLACE...DON'T PASS JUDGMENTS WITHOUT KNOWING THE FACTS , PLEASE !!!!!
I realize I'm responding to an old post but thanks so much for explaining. I always suspected something was 'off' about the recording, that the voices, especially Maestro Domingo's sounded unnatural. I know this may not be true, but the story I heard was that Mr. Zeffirelli wanted it that way so the voices would be deeper and darker. That doesn't make very much sense to me. At any rate, I had the pleasure of hearing Placido and yourself sing it in the house on three occasions so I know how it's supposed to sound!
This is transposed down 1/2 step. he is singing a high Ab, not the written high A natural.
Let us not forget that he is a BassBaritone and the tessitura is a bit high. His voice is dark for the Iago role but nevertheless impressive
This is not Justino Diaz voice.
