He is the true Iago, his voice is for this role : this voice is very dark and metallic, i don't know if he can play another role because his voice is so dark. It,s not the better version of otello but i don't see him in rigoletto, don carlo etc.
Hmm, you seem to be right. Not quite a semitone, but almost. I have the DVD and heard them side by side. But strangely enough I don't think it changes the timbre of his voice much. Which is probably why I thought you were wrong.
Unfortunately, for the film and so that the notes of the opera singers do not sound so unpleasant to the general public, Zeffirelli decided to lower the recording half tone when making the final edition. Absolutely distorts the original sound. I have this on DVD, LP, and CD. Only the DVD is half tone down. So good opera-film, but to ruin it with that bad effect ... a sin!
Thank you for the link for comparison ! I was wondering why his voice sounded so much darker & more basso-like than I have ever heard him --- as if he had a richer, deeper voice when he was _younger_ which would be unusual, especially for a lower-voiced singer. I was thinking :: too bad he lost those textures of his voice too early as he aged.

His voice sounds dark because the playback is at the wrong speed.
Скорость неправильная, Вы это скажите производителю диска или звукозаписывающей фирме, а не мне.
No. Diaz is a bass.
Respectfully, he starts the aria on an A. The music score says B flat. The playback is a semitone too low.

it's the caricature of the diablo
This is not what he sounds like at all. Very clearly a half-step too low.
Questo è un basso... ma basso proprio...altro che baritono! Veramente sinistro!...
