Solid pva bag fishing with barbless hooks and short hook lengths

  • The idea of having really short hook lengths inside pva bags is really appealing and so tempting to do in order to keep that presentation at a premium. I fished this method for a couple of months at different venues, however I soon pulled the plug after losing a number of fish. The short hook lengths are particularly problematic with barbless hooks and no drop off set up.

Hi steve thats a very interesting topic as ive had dilemas over solid bag hooklengths i use them in winter and spring and when tying them up ive tied a few that i thought were a tad on the long side compared to the kind of generic sizing of bag hooklengths but i used them anyway and caught fish on them and had great hook holds so its certainly got scope for a bit of experimenting i hope u and your family had a nice xmas mate and wishing you all a happy newyear and all the best for 2022 cheers

      Hi pal.
I think it's a compromise between tight hook length presentation within the bag and keeping a hold of the fish. I find I'm having to spend a little longer adjusting the slightly longer hook length but it's definitely worth it.
Happy new year to you and your loved ones pal 👍🏻
      Steve

I've been using Nash trigga link in my solid bags, it's basically got a bungee effect, haven't lost any on that, make the rig 6 inches long and it will shrink to about 4.5 inches when wet and the stretch back to 6 inches when under tension, works for me

      Hi Justin.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll give this a go and make a short video on it's outcome, I'll give you a mention. Thanks again for sharing this tip 👍🏻

That's great, I'll just add I usually shrink it first before putting it in the bag 👍

hi bud, you can still drop the lead without using tubing or leaders.

There's a way of dropping the lead with a stem? I need to look into this. Thank you

Could be worth trying in my match fishing when larger carp are in there. I use 4" on the method but could easily up it to 6".

Have you dropped many carp on the method feeder when using a 4" hook length with barbless hooks?

Not really but 1 is too many in a match. Also there may be lots of smaller fish and you may only lose the larger ones

I have used barbless hooks since the 70’s and I have never felt I have lost fish because of the lack of barb. Barbless hooks penetrate deep and in a carps mouth they are often difficult to remove. I regularly fish with a method feeder with 4 inch hook lengths and have caught carp to mid twenties. I do however only use elastic in combination with the method feeder as I feel this means that the lead and line is pulled way back from the fishes mouth such that the flank of the fish only contacts elastic which I feel is safer for the fish. I use the Guru safe system to ensure if the line breaks the fish is not left to trail the lead and line. The shorter the hook length the more the fish has the advantage to use the lead to lever out the hook so I agree with the reasoning that longer hook lengths make it more difficult for the fish to shed the hook but longer hook lengths can also lead to deeper hooking of the fish which is also more damaging to a fish.

    Gemini stems are top notch

      HI Dylan.
Had quite a few people say the same thing. Will end up trying them 1 day I guess. Cheers

Hi just a quick question solid bags are great but always get breamed out anything to put in them to stop them

      Hi.
I'm no expert but after talking to a lot of anglers it seems most suffer the same problem with regards to the Bream. I've not come across an exceptional Carp bait that the Bream don't like although I always try to steer clear of fishmeal based products if there's a lot of Bream present. I try to avoid waters with a high population of them when possible but when I can't do this I'll avoid solid bag fishing on most occasions.

It's going to sound mad but when PVA bag fishing we don't use big enough leads. The water almost negates the weight of a 2 0z lead

Spot on Daz I use 2oz leads because I like using small bags but I find i have to suck air out of them for them to sit properly. I only found out after testing the dissolve rate of pva in a tank. 👍🏻
