When i was in Kyoto i visited a cat themed cafe (not a "cat cafe"), that among other strange things, informed me that the food would cost 33% extra if i did not eat all of it. They handed me a page written in english explaining this and saying that not eating all the rice in japan was "extremely rude." To my dismay they served the worst miso i've ever tasted and it was an absolute genuine struggle to down it without gagging infront of the ever watchful staff.
Strange place to say the least. At least i could read the book they had on the table about all the different handicrafts you can make using the fur whiskers and whatever else that come from your pet cat. Examples of said handicrafts were strewn about the interior.

Probably a scam, serving you bad food on purpose so that you pay the extra charge. They know most people who go to thematic cafe usually go for the novelty and not as a regular hangout.

Hello from Australia:) ive just come back last Friday from a 3 week whirlwind trip to japan, i myself have had bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy - basically cutting out 90% my my stomach) as i travelled with my parter (and 2 friends) we just shared smaller meals or i ordered a small serve where able or smaller type meals (yakitori, small steak, side dish or salads - yakiniku was also a good option for us) only once did i feel i needed to explain my situation to a waitress (luckily who spoke English well) and apologized for not being able to finish my meal, although it was delicious. 😊 I also found street food was much easier to consume being small portions. ☺️ Hope that helps any listeners /watchers who are in the same situation

There’s so many cool things to see in Kyoto - I’m sure you had a lovely time.
The first time I went to Kyoto, my host family took me to both places and took photos, that was in 2015. I didn’t realise the hype myself back then! 😅 We missed out on Fushimi Inari Taisha due to there being no parking space for our driver - so I had to ensure I went during the summer gone and grab my “Insta pic”. 😂
I recently went back to Japan a couple of months ago and it was great. I will be back in the next year or so for further experiences too! 😊

I actually went to Shingo-mura in Aomori to see the tomb of Jesus Christ in 2019, inspired by Chris's video. It was fun! There was a little Mini-stop conbini nearby which advertised its opening hours as "juuji kara" ("from 10am", but also "cross-shaped"). That's the kind of pun it's worth travelling to the mountains for.

Reminds me of a few years ago, when I was walking with my longboard under my arm, to the skate spot of our city, and in the corner of my eye I spotted a quite wellknown Dutch comedian walking his dog. I was a big fan of him at the time because he's quite soaked in sarcasm.
But he looked terrified back at me like ''im just walking my dog, leave me be'' and I respected that. I think he mightve been at an appointment or something.

    #FaxMachine
Greetings Chris Creme and Pete De Menthe
I am a solo musician who has wanted to visit and play gigs in Japan since watching VHS tapes of Japanese garage bands in the 90's. I finally made my decision to visit Japan during the pandemic I watched a lot of videos but I would say that your videos made Japan seem a lot more obtainable and less intimidating.
I am a one man Ramones tribute and I managed to play 3 gigs while I was there in September 2023. I even busked in Sinjuku for a couple of nights.
I managed to get the JR Pass before prices went up and I made good use of it. In addition to the 2 gigs I played in Tokyo, I played a gig in Fukui. I also went to Matsuyama to see Guitar Wolf. I was the only Gaijin there and people started buying me drinks. I asked for a Whiskey Coke and what did he order for himself you ask? Creme De Menthe. I immediately started chuckling about the irony of the situation because I had just watched the Trash Taste episode where you talked about expired Creme De Menthe.
I had an extremely positive experience with the gigs I played in Japan. The audiences were all very respectful and enthusiastic. Most of the clubs provide quality amps and drums. There is a healthy busking scene. There are open mic nights in every major city. Used instruments are very affordable and they will buy your gear back from you (for half price) when you leave. Women musicians are much more common in Japan so Female musicians should feel more welcome. It's easy to store a guitar or bass in the overhead compartments of the shinkansen and even the local trains.
I estimate that my 2 week stay cost approximately $3,200, That's including the plane ticket that I bought 6 months in advance, plus JR pass and internet bundle. Keep in mind that I am a cheap musician and didn't eat expensive food. I barely paid for my own drinks. I mostly stayed at a capsule hotel in Shinjuku and that was a very interesting experience.
Don't wait as long as I did, if you want to visit Japan. It's easier for a musician to play there than you might think.
    Rocky The Ramone

Question - a few of my favorite themed bars I found in Japan in days of yore were Redrum - Shining themed bar in Shirakawa, American Beauty - co-themed around the band and the movie in Osaka, and Sex Machine - a James Brown themed izakaya also in Osaka. The webcam site is a vignette of my life - I spend my working hours watching CCTV, with the monotony punctuated by bouts of boredom and drudge.
On the subject of whiskey / alcohol marketing - several years ago I hung out with a dude who was a beer aficionado - and we'd end up at all kinds of weird festivals & brew houses drinking questionable brews. But there was one I remember it was called 'Old dog fucker' and had the tagline 'you may lose control of your bowels, but at least you won't lose your vision!' - strangely, it was actually quite presentable... mind you, due to my alcohol intake at the time, my liver had the consistency of pâté, so maybe that skewed the taste test.

importing a car into the US is complicated. you can get any car you want over here, but you can't get it registered unless it's 25 years or older because then it's too old to have to qualify for our road safety tests. anything newer and you can't get it road legal here without ridiculous expense. basically you have to hand over a car (or multiple) that the nhtsa can then put thru crash-tests to determine if they are safe enough for our roads. if it fails, you can make modifications (rollcages, better bumpers, etc) and have that car retested. if it passes, you would need to give your final car those same modifications so the nhtsa will sign off on it and allow it to be titled here.
if you really want to bring a car home, stick to something older. or just find one here to begin with. there are several importers in the states who are constantly bringing cars/trucks over to sell. waaaaaaaaaay less of a hassle

    RE: Recognition in public
I don't get that whole star-struck thing, or feeling the need to document encounters with famous people by bothering them with autographs or photos. I'm just too polite and respectful for that. And to be honest, I expect they get a bit tired of hearing things like "I'm your number 1 fan!" or "I loved you in [insert film]!" I expect they just want to get on with their day and do whatever they want to do - whether it's going to the shop for milk, or going to visit a friend without being stopped.

Some people really really get a lot out of the videos and podcasts and meeting someone like Chris could be a very high point in their life they always want to remember, perhaps even tell their friends etc. and want something they can tangibly show. I can totally see getting annoyed when people ask having no clue to who you are though. Then again who knows, that one person may even become a fan because of the encounter.

agreed. i've met a few folks from tv/youtube over the years and i just can't bring myself to ask for a picture or autograph or anything. at most i'll just offer a quick thanks for something that they did that made an impact on me in some way. a big highlight for me recently was getting to meet connor at twitchcon last month. didn't ask for anything, just told him i really appreciated his content and all he's done with mouse because it made some really shitty days a lot better for me.
sure their job might be entertainment, but that's not a 24/7 gig. they deserve to be normal people in their off time.

The price of Japanese age statement whiskey has exploded recently due to shortages and its rise in popularity. You need to be careful with Japanese whiskey because until recently there was no restriction on it being sourced from another country and being sold as Japanese (May still be, haven’t been following it but there was talk of creating similar regulations to scotch, Irish etc). Most Japanese non age statement and blends are just cheap scotch.
A lot of them are still reasonably good quality and well priced just be aware if your primary motivation for buying is wanting something Japanese.

First, I suggest making multiple copies. lol I had quite a few people walk away with it and never bring it back. Second, people are so kind and sweet. We were at one restaurant and the chef literally kept coming out with every ingredient asking if it was ok. I also try to in general pick things that don't include those allergies.(sometimes unavoidable like a kaiseki dinner) Just be kind and people will be kind back.

Interesting comment about "fans" accosting you for photos etc. I think people/fans presume too much and think it absolutely appropriate for you to find it annoying.
For a time I live in Aoyama and walked by the office of Kengo Kuma on my way to and from my apartment multiple times daily. He's an architect I have long admired and have heard lecture. I wondered whether I might ever run into him and often mentally rehearsed what I might say in my (pathetic) Japanese to convey how much I admired his work.
One day I did see him in a small courtyard less than a block from my home, talking on the phone. For a few minutes I lingered looking into shop windows hoping he'd finish the phone call. However, he didn't. So I wandered off without speaking to him. Frankly, I had no intention of asking for a photo; I simply wished to express know how much I admire his work. In the end, I had to be content to have walked within a few meters of him without being able to say so. For a moment I was in the presence of greatness. It was (had to be) enough and remains an unforgettable "encounter."

For the people worried about leaving food: Bring your own To-Go containers - tupperware, ziplock bags - and pack your leftovers. They should last. You could also just pack the non-liquid parts of like ramen. I have done this in the US just to save on To-Go containers and flattish tupperware the nests within each other when empty works very well. A couple hours later, you can eat it for a snack!

A few years ago myself and a friend were in Sheffield near the university, there there is a faily large Asian cstudent community and he is a huge Japanese horror fan. Whilst we were looking for somewhere to eat a stunning young student came up to him weaing a face mask and he screeched at her "Don't you f*%king dare ask me if you are pretty!". Her reaction was priceless.
