    One day, and it is possible. The human race will look at the Mona Lisa and say, "she should have been drawn in anime style" Thats how I feel when contemporary youtubers look back at tomb raider with modern game design sensibilities at the forefront of their minds.

    • @Ariquel
      @Ariquel  7 місяців тому +3

      Not sure if I completely understood your comment. Comparing games and art doesn't make much sense to me. In art you have different styles and that's it. In games you have style but also evolution. With the technology of today you can do things that couldn’t before and improve it, I' not even talking about changing. This is an opportunity to improve. If they added things like photo mode with all the outfits what's the problem with adding other things that don't change or affect the main game? They already created modern controls, so one of their objectives was getting new fans.

    • @jackrussell3084
      @jackrussell3084 7 місяців тому +4

      @@Ariquel I don't agree with your use of the word "evolution" in this context. I would instead say "change" to describe the shift - i.e. Art changes over time and Games as an Art medium, undergoes changes over time.
      I dont think you can say games have evolved, that is, if you call better graphics and more open and empty worlds progress, than you can call it evolution.
      Hence my Mona Lisa analogy. Our tastes in art change, but some works of art stand timeless. And that is how I view Tomb Raider. It is timeless, and it wouldn't add value if we apply modern game mechanics into it.

    The internet is so big now, that there’ll always be someone who complaints about trivial shit that doesn’t matter, like Pierre’s jacket. Back when the games first released, there was barely any internet, so these vocal minorities wouldn’t even be noticed. I think it’s something people forget when they mention how people didn’t used to complain about things like they do now.
    I was a bit bothered by the lack of cutscenes in those expansions, or even no changes made to those in the main games, like how the guards in Area 51 remark on Lara wearing hot pants when she wasn’t. But I suppose that’s just not what remasters are for. It falls on remakes to change that stuff.

    • @Ariquel
      @Ariquel  7 місяців тому +1

      I totally agree. If they add new scenes, it's like making a remake. But just fixing up the cutscenes is more like a remaster, right? Like in the Crash Bandicoot games, they mainly made the graphics and cutscenes look better. But with Resident Evil 4 remake, they changed a lot more, like the gameplay, locations, and even the cutscenes.

    I’m so glad you mentioned the fact that they didn’t include statistics for the number of enemies in a level, it makes getting the trophy where you have to kill all the enemies incredibly annoying! It’s also irritating that the all pick ups trophy is glitched so no one can get it. Other than those complaints I’m having a great time with the remasters though :).

    I love that they included old flaws of the game too. It doesn’t need modernization much, but it did need the graphic update to not hurt eyes. It is also fun comparison how the games were still engaging in olden times. The only reason I haven’t played the tomb raider in years is the graphics meant for tube televisions only. It is simply too bad.
    But I am really disappointed they added new bugs too, modern controls are appalling and the most people quit who don’t want to learn the original controls of the game. The camera is simply too glitchy in modern controls. Also in venice there is a game breaking bug, the timed door doesn’t work properly and the main puzzle is ruined where you must drive fast by a boat through venice.
    The more modern Tomb raider anniversary did everything poorly and it was really bad remake and didn’t feel at all the original. I found myself bored playing that game. Strangely it doesn’t happen with originals. They might be too frustrating but never boring. The game is so old that it should be treated as relic and it got more repect to the originals than any other game.😎

    • @faville
      @faville 7 місяців тому

      I just started TR1 and heard about the camera in modern controls and thought "eh, how bad can it be?" I made it to almost the end of Vilcabamba before getting so irritated I had to switch to the trusty tank controls that I'm used to. I'll probably stick with that since that's how I played the originals. If something gets patched and improved I might try again. I'm also thinking ahead to the more tricky jump sequences and I don't see how they'll be possible with the modern controls, but I assume there must be a way otherwise they wouldn't be in the game.

    As a remaster it is very well done, and I thank the game developers for their work. However, I don't understand why the water graphics are so bland; all the surface textures are identical as far as I can tell - translucent like shed skin instead of smooth and glistening like flowing glass - with no realistic shine or ripple physics. This should've been really straightforward, being for PS4/5 consoles, plus the fact that it doesn't affect the original level design. Honestly, I would buy the game for upgraded water.

    • @soulsphere9242
      @soulsphere9242 7 місяців тому

      Agree 100% on the water. I don't think it looks bad, just very underwhelming. I do miss the look of rain causing ripples on the water in TR3 and the wavey oscillation of the water and mud surfaces are now gone.

  • @Johnny-Thunder

    I completed Tomb Raider 1 and 2 so far, and having never played the originals I can see now why people idolize these games so much: they truly kick ass. Blowing up yetis with a grenade launcher: it's the kind of absurd fun that you don't find in games anymore. The modern controls I think haven't even been playtested: while I did play these games with modern controls because in the end they suited me much more there are a lot of problems with them: in this control system the camera is the rudder that steers Lara: so we should have total control over it all the time. Yet the game sometimes takes control of the camera itself, making Lara fly off in a direction she isn't supposed to, or it doesn't allow for the camera to be placed behind Lara when she's standing with her back to a wall, and in a tight space this is becoming ever more of a problem. And then there are the vehicles that can't even be exited or accelerated in the modern controls, making me constantly having to switch between tank and modern controls... These things have to be fixed in a patch because in their current state they're unacceptable. The controversy about the starting message is a bit overblown in my opinion: while I don't appreciate Crystal Dynamics preaching their moral values to me I realize they could have made all the changes they wanted but they didn't. They could have changed all the gorillas and tigers that Lara has to kill in Trump voters but they didn't. They could have deflated her boobs to the size of mosquito bites but they didn't, they could have changed her into a black gay transsexual activist but they didn't. All they did was put a disclaimer at the beginning that can be easily ignored, so lets be thankful that that's all. Anyway, this was the first time in more than a decade that I was excited about a new Tomb Raider game, and there were several moments during playing sessions that I looked at the time and saw that it was 3 'o clock in the morning already, so can't say I didn't enjoy these games.

    I definitely am disappointed in the remasters. Like you mentioned at the end, they really did change a bunch of stuff but claimed they didn't. That ended up bothering me a lot. It's no longer preservation or restoration at this point. Instead I now see this collection as just a bad variant of these games. So many visual oddities, things uselessly changed for no good reason, and even some game mechanics that come across more broken now than they did back in the 90s. Needless to say, I'm sad I didn't end up loving them the way I expected to. I was hyping up and supporting them for the 5 months leading up to release, just to open the games and feel let down. In 2024, I can barely see how that's excusable. But regardless, the original versions still exist and are available to buy easily, so I'll continue to play them the original way. Besides, those are the versions I fell in love with in the first place, so there's no loss in that.

    I think having some of the trophies/achievements be bugged (e.g. all pickups in TR1) so they cannot be obtained until a patch comes out is completely inexcusable. A lot of fans are very familiar with these games and are likely to be starting off going for the trophies/achievements as a new way of playing.
    Also not having a level select mode after completion is pretty bad.

  • @cikame
    @cikame 7 місяців тому

    I think criticism is always welcome, you'll never find anything that everyone is completely in agreement on.
    I have to imagine the budget for this remaster was pretty low, we know the core developers on the project were modders from the community so there was probably more passion behind it than money :P, that's not to say it looks cheap they did a thorough and impressive job.
    There are a few new features, but adding even more features or stretching the budget to remake FMV's was just beyond the scale of this project, due to the remasters running on the original game engine there were limits too, so despite the few issues i really believe this is the best remastering possible for these games.
    We've had a bit of a preview of future updates thanks to the Epic build of the game, though i don't know how far the devs will be allowed to take it since the Saber split, but i really hope they get to continue on this and further games, fingers crossed.

    Funny inconsistency. I recently completed the Lara Croft remaster, as well as Tomb Raider: Anniversary, but I’ll talk about the first game.
    In the first part of the game, Lara meets Larson in the cutscene and offers to work for Natla. In the same part, Pierre and Larson die.
    Now let's remember the fifth part, Chronicles. The action takes place BEFORE the first part of the game, and our heroes are trying to make a deal, after which Larson is wounded and burned by a three-headed snake (and he most likely survives, because his body is gone afterwards), and Pierre falls, and makes such a sound that he clearly could not survive (if Lara falls, she will not survive). So, these guys have a conflict with Lara as a result. Then my question is logical...How did Lara agree to talk with Larson (at the beginning of the first part of the game, in the intro) and why are there no old grievances, etc.? Why doesn’t Lara see the catch, that these two will deceive her again? In addition, Lara's character in Chronicles, in Rome...is more cruel, since Lara lets Pierre fall and she has no feelings of guilt, while in the first part of the game, Lara feels guilty for Larson's death.

I knew they couldn't leave everything alone.

    @kostishasopoulos9816 7 місяців тому

    Thw one thing that makes for a worse experience is shadows. The whole game is too bright. You can see far ahead in the distance when in the original it was pitch black and grafually came to light as you get closer.
    Also there is no use for flares as they have given a light sources to every dark room and corridor .
    Another significant downgrade is the addition of rooftop openings. Destroys immersion as youn had the impression you were getting deeper underground in the original.Now you see its not the case in remastered.
    Flickering light from fires and torches is now stable and illuminates.Another downgrade.
    Water some times cannot be seen from a distance. Same thing when underwater. You cannot distinguish the surface any more.
    In other instances, sprites representing water flow now have been removed. Clasical example in TRII Temple of Xian. The water no more rushes ashore. It is plain still on the surface.
    Changes like thes that have me wondering what were they thinking...Often times i find myself playing in old graphics (and lower frame rate) as it feels more satisfying an experience, only to changebto new graphs just to see what they did with the remastered.
    Oldschool graphics is my verdict.

    Honestly, the people losing their minds over minor stuff like Pierre's jacket in the first game or the trigger warning that's on screen for 1 second probably don't have a lot going on with their lives.. worst case scenario they are just outrage farmers that don't even play the games.. it is INSANE that such a minor thing has poisoned the discource around these games so much to the point where I can't even search for TR Remaster content without that shit popping up.
    As someone who grew up with these games with the whole family coming together to solve them back in the 90s, I think the trigger warning is at the very least warranted considering there's quite a few things that would surely not pass with today's audiences.. especially when you just casually shoot black people in TR3, cannibals or not and a lot of depictions of cultures other than British are very caricature-ish.. though granted Lara herself is sort of a cartoon anyway. It's a complex issue and it's better to have a split second warning about it rather than having to deal with it since if they changed the source material it'd be WAY worse.
