    Maggot Life Cycle
The life cycle of a fly begins when a female lays an egg on a food medium like rotting meat. A female fly can lay up to 150 eggs at a time. Over a period of a few days, the female can make 5-6 batches of eggs. Eggs are deposited in compost, manure and other decomposing organic material. Eggs resemble very small grains of rice.
After 23 hours, the eggs hatch into the first larvae stage known as a maggot. These are legless white insects. They are basically worms with a mouth piece. All they do is crawl around eating voraciously. During the maggot stage, they will molt several times, once at 27 hours and 22 hours, and finally into a pupae at 130 hours.
After feeding, the maggot will find a place to pupate or cocoon into a brown hard shell. This protects the inactive fly. Over the course of three to six days (143 hours), the pupae develop legs and wings, ultimately emerging as full-grown house flies. Within two to three days, female house flies are capable of completing the life cycle and depositing eggs or mating with a female.

Try a old standard a burlap sack or a onion bag. I use a 2 1/2 gallon pail with 1 1/2 inch holes in the bottom and a 1/4 screen over the them. Don't worry about the top rain it helps to keep the meat from drying out. When the maggots' get ready to leave they will burrow through the hair and bone or go up and over the top. Good use for the fish frames and guts. Original trout hatchery feed was cow heads hung over a pond. That is the liver next to the gall balder the mud line is their kidney.

  • @graemewhalen40

Guys you need to come fishing in the UK. Maggots are a standard bait and you can buy them from any tackle shop in a variety of colours for about £3 a pint. They are blue bottle fly larvae but you can get smaller ones from green bottles we call pinkies and even smaller one from house flies called squats. They are farmed commercially.

Mate, this is how you and Kevin get the "wild" chooks fed and how to catch them.
Nest boxes / shelters in the bush, then a flimsy wire cage with a feeder, they will come to the feeder, right when you need them in the hard times, it takes the sport out of "hunting" i know but it does provide fairly "wild" food, and there is always the "fun" of the egg "hunts".
P.S. Pickled is so easy, boil, mix with vinegar water salt sugar and choice of herbs.
P.P.S. they will attract predators, which you can trap and consume via a trapline outside the chooks range.
Thanks for content mate, this takes me back to when my grandfather learned to farm gents for his chooks from a Korean bloke in the late 80s.

If you raise chickens, put one of these in the middle of the coop. Do straw, meat, straw, meat, straw and put a lid on it. The straw does a surprisingly good job of keeping down the smell.

@The Wooded Beardsman ,when I get stinging nettles I take the back side of a nice looking fern leaf and rub it on it.those furry little red and green balls have something in them that helps stop the itch.

Nice trick. I used to collect them as bait from the trash when I was a child.
