Fantastic step by step explanation! I am experimenting with canned tuna fish. I put two tuna cans outside each with a small amount of tuna and added a little water and paper towels to keep moist. It attracted mostly green bottle flies and a few blue bottle flies. By the end of day two, some of the maggots are 1/4" long! The two cans are sitting in a small plastic tote. I was thinking of adding some coconut fiber in the container around the cans and keeping it loosely covered and damp. The maggots and flies will be used to feed pet jumping spiders.
Not sure how well it would work for you but from my experience cleaning out the dog kennels at the hunting club I’ve noticed we get a ton of maggots right below the dog food feeders from the loose food on the ground. I tested this summer with a bucket of dog food in sawdust and had good success. Cuts down on the smell a ton as well since the food really doesn’t stink

Maybe you know by now but if you make holes in the bucket or some way the maggots to come through a single hole, they will get out from that when they are done with eating. It is self sorting.
Hi, we also have wax worms which are the larvae of the wax moth. They are mainly used as feed for reptiles...but they probably make good bait as well. Good idea to use them on lures.

Hi, if you watch my video "Breed the BEST worms for fishing - European Night Crawlers" I show the coconut coir that I use. You can get bags at Bunnings. However, corn flour, rice husks, and other mediums are also good.
I've never tried dirt before. The latest trial has been with sand. I use builders sand. Make it damp and the maggots last a long time. It also makes their skin a bit tougher so they are better on the hook.
Hi, no I've never had cockroach problems, not even one. It might depend on the area you are in. We have some cockroaches in the area but they don't get into the maggot growing process.

Hey, great video! You inspired me :) So I started on Tuesday afternoon, it all went well. On Friday morning I think some water infeltrated the bin, and ever since then it feels like they are not growing. The water shouldn't stop them from growing right? plus, a fish head is something they go through in a day, and you have to keep feeding them no? They require quite a lot of food for 5-7 days. they're suppose to start turning into Pupas soon but they still seem very small. What am I doing wrong if at all? Thanks!
It's hard to answer some of the questions because I don't know where you live but it sounds like it's hot. In a warm climate the maggots develop quickly but also the flys lay a lot of eggs and continue to lay while the food is there. That's why there can be a lot of small maggots. If they are going through a big fish head in a day you need more food for the maggots to develop to full size.
@@howtofish5051 So I am in Philly, and the weatear was about 25-30 celcius. It started warm, but then it started raining. For some reason after 5 days they we're still far from the size you have in your video, and didn't seem to keep growing, even though I fed them almost every day. I'll try again and make sure water don't come in. It also had a very bad smell that took over the backyard, so I'll have to see how I do it the next time. Thanks
Hey Wayne, I’ve been fishing the nong, & near the Westgate catching lots of bream but I’ve noticed they’re hooking in the gut, I was wondering what size/ type of hook you use in that area?
Hi James, I use a range of hook sizes ranging from size 14 when the fish aren't biting up to size 4 when they are on the chew and I'm targeting larger fish. I find it is not so much the size of the hook but how quickly you can strike when the fish bites. I tend to watch my rods closely and strike into bites almost immediately and this reduces gut hooking. Having said this, there are times when the fish are biting so aggressively that the just swallow the hook as soon as they find your bait. If gut hooking is a real problem then maybe try circle hooks to avoid this.
We have chickens, some drops of rain for into the fed can and massive Maggots appeared. Fattest Maggots ever bc they contantly feed on the grain pellets

I'm not sure how I can attract only blowflies....but I'm open to suggestions. If you store the maggots in the fridge they will last for many weeks without turning into casters(cocoons).
@@howtofish5051 For blowflies only , you need to monitor the bait I guess - I guess bacyards tend to have more blowflies atracted anyway So you allow the maggots to eat all the carp head - I am concerned the maggots will turn into coccoons before the head has been consumed and before I had the chance to harvest them
@@mohammednovalija You do need to monitor them. I check every day and harvest when they are ready. Waiting an extra day, especially in hot weather, can be too late.
Ants can be a real problem. I usuallly spray the base of the bucket to repel them (be careful not to spray the top or you'll repel the flies ). A run of warm days usually has the maggots appearing pretty quickly, in my experience.

We call them wax worms, and on a small lure is great for crappies and bluegills in ice fishing.

Hi, no I've never had cockroach problems, not even one. It might depend on the area you are in. We have some cockroaches in the area but they don't get into the maggot growing process.

I put my fly larvae in white flour in a glass jar with little holes in the lid and they last a long time

I’m going to try useing them on a 12 size small hook for trout , would u go though the tail or through the back skin lightly ?
I usually go through the tail ie the blunt end, but sometimes put one through the head to make them look a bit different.
When carp fishing do u get eels on maggots
No, I've never caught eels on maggots. Caught plenty on worms.

you can use anything that attracts flies. I find softer meats tend to produce more maggots but I think sausage would produce some.
Chicken leg, ground beef. Any expired meat will work.
