DIY - Installing Fender Locking tuners... plugging holes & proper alignment is not that hard to do.

- Installing Fender Locking Tuners is usually a easy DIY job - however, for this installation, the old alignment holes had to be plugged and new holes drilled. It involves a little more work, but with a little preparation and patience, a good result can be had. This Squier Deluxe Stratocaster will benefit from the tuning ease and stability from these new tuners and the end result is very satisfying for the "do-it-yourselfer". Enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Thanks for the tip using the sharpee on the tuner notches. I was dreading have to measure all that stuff out lol. There is also a tool for $50+ sold to help notch that out - but this just saved me time and money! You my friend - are a jenious ;)
@@bbqchickenrobot3lol- thanks
Thank you for this video, I broke one of the stock tuners on my Squier Telecaster and I got a set of Fender non locking tuners and of course the guide dimples were off, this video enabled me to successfully change them, easy to follow and made me confident that I could do this, the d through high e posts seemed really small to the point were you couldn't wind more than once but thankfully it worked, great video and thanks again🙂
Informative, practical... and strangely therapeutic!
Nice and concise. Saved me from coughing up for a jig!
Well done. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
Thank for the sharpie idea, very cool.
I have had good luck installing Hipshot locking tuners on a few guitars. Because they come with the "universal mounting plates" they go on easily without the need to drill additional holes. Or fill holes.
Hipshot tuners are great!
@@ManotickGuitarTech yep. I'd like it they were a little more stiff to turn, but they work, and are less money than a lot of others.
Thank you for a very well done video. One of the best I have seen.
Thanks, Arnie. I hope you have subscribed to my channel too?
Just bought some new fender locking tuners to replace a set on my custom Strat and I'm facing this exact issue (I even checked before buying to make sure it was a 'fender style' tuner setup... but alas, off by a millimetre or two). Guess I have some work ahead of me still. Thanks for the great instructional video.
Good luck!
Thank you, for taking some time to show what others don't.
Protip: Use bamboo bar-b-que skewers sold on the Asian food aisle in most chain grocery stores in the US. They are larger diameter than a toothpick, but smaller than a dowel.
I have a supply of those as well.
I bought a walnut 70s style Stratocaster. The bridge is not that good and neither are the machine hands. It’s got the big head stock. The guitar is worn out and I think a gold bridge and a gold Trauner arm with gold hardware will really look cool on this guitar. I watched your video and it was super cool thank you so much now I know how to drill, pen holes, thanks for the video. Have a great day love it I’ve been playing guitar for several years. Like almost 50 I have some knowledge of working on them but now I’m getting more into learning how to work on them. I’ve learned one thing nice tools help a lot. Thanks again. Have a great day.👍🏼👍🏼😁😁😎🎸🎼 and 🎶🎵☮️🎸
Glad you enjoyed the video- I hope you have subbed too?
Really happy I came across this video. Will help a ton with my weekend project, thanks!
Glad it will help you out! I hope you have subbed to my channel too?
@@ManotickGuitarTech oh I did that a while ago, I knew your channel would be super helpful. Take care! I try to like all the videos of yours I watch to support.
Aha! Excellent tutorial!
thanks - I hope you have subbed to my channel too?
Thanks! I'll be doing this job tomorrow.
I have some Grover’s that previous owner botched the install. All crooked. I just dremeled off the nibs and straightened them out. No problems yet!!
Nice Vid - well done.
I sure enjoyed watching your work & craftmanship Sir..... I came across a (( "Starcaster" by "Fender" )) , It has a wonder feel & great neck , I'm just wondering if I can make these tuners work for it ? It really does play wonderful & I think once I change out the pickups & electronics it will be a nice replacement for my old Strat that was stolen many years ago.. I do miss it , but it-is-what-it-is.... Thank You for such a well made video & stay blessed...
Thanks, Danny. Remove one of your exisitng tuners and measure the tumig peg hole then check the spec of the new tuners you want to get. The dia of the hole is the most important thing, it is relatively easy to plug small screw holes if required. I hope you have subscribed to my channel?
@@ManotickGuitarTech Thank You for your reply , that makes perfect since , I've been playing it & haven't started tearing it down (you might say ) I like how it plays ... But that's an easy thing to do to check ... I just subscribed , so all is good now on this end ... Again thank you for replying, You did a wonderful job on your video , very easy to follow ... Stay well... Danny
This video helped a lot! Thank you
Thank you
I'm about to embark on this project. I have a new Sonic Squire. Are these drop in now or do I have to re-bore the tuner holes and drill new indents for the pegs like you did in the video? Are the new Squires updated to be drop in with this hardware now?
always check the specs of replacement tuners against the actual size holes on your headstock before buying... not always drop in.
@@ManotickGuitarTech Thanks, I saw a comment further down that said something to the effect of newer Squires are drop in now where they weren't before. My Squire is a 2024. Great video btw!
@@ManotickGuitarTech it looks like the tuner holes don't need to be re-bored but the pegs don't line up
@@JasonRonimous That can happen - plug and fill!
Another great segment. I have a Strat knockoff I'm planning to use as a mod learning project, what's your opinion on Hipshot locking tuners with the UMP plate?
Generally, anything hipshot makes is great. The UMP does make it fast and easy- no drilling.
@@ManotickGuitarTech Good to know, me with a drill in hand is flirting with disaster.
They work well and you don't have to drill more holes. I have a 72 LP deluxe that was missing the klusons when I got it. I found a set of hipshot and installed in about 30 minutes without more drilling.
Would the tuners rotate without the locating pins? The thought of grinding off the pins crossed my mind....
Yes, they are there to hold them in place
@@ManotickGuitarTechjust got to that part in the video, thanks.
I would have put tape on the bit as a depth gauge so you know how deep to drill so you dont go too deep.
My Tele clone has locking tuners on it already but I’m changing strings some time next week when they arrive, I’ve gone to Slinky’s the same as Angus uses. After seeing your other video I ordered what was advertised as a lefty tremolo but I suspect it isn’t, and I’m going to have to modify it to work for me, which I can do, it’s only metal, so I’ll sort it. I’m thinking however I’ll use it on another Tele I’m planning on building, as a bit of a tester, it’s in a relic style so if a tremolo looks a bit weird, it’s not going to matter much, and if I like it, I’ll buy a Bixby lefty for my super Tele I’m planning to build, and looking at parts for now. So lots of fun.
I see that's a Squire .As Im upgrading the tuners on my Fender Jaguar will they drop straight in?
Also is the white on the back of the locking tuners meant to be removed or is it part of the design?May sound dumb but hard to tell
They should drop in but I always double check the specs. The white is part of the design
Can you replace a 1999 american strat to locking tuners or are there mods to do
@@johnboho2330 probably have to drill some new holes... I always measure first
Graphtec Ratio locking tuners are a direct drop-in. Much easier!
good to know... client supplied these ones for installation.
Good to know - although they are more expensive than my guitar!!
why do you have to hide the serial number of a guitar? Someone explain this to me because I haven't figured it out yet! Thank you!
just privacy
@@ManotickGuitarTech what can the serial number of a guitar reveal about my privacy what? nothing ? continue I still don't understand.
@@kacsa-csa6754 somebody can fraudulently claim that it is their guitar that was stolen, or use the serial number when building a fake
You think someone at Fender would have had the smarts to design the new locking tuners with the bump for the indents in the same locations as the original tuners. It shouldn’t have been that hard for someone on their design team to make it happen.
Dave, the older Squiers have different tuners on them and they are not the same as Fender ones; Mexican Strats have the same hole locations.
@@ManotickGuitarTech The Mexican strats have the same hole locations of the American ones??
@@Schaz42 They should
@william abercrombie the Mexican strats are the same. I have a 2004 and they lined right up.
What is that dowel made of? What wood would you prefer?
generally I use maple
@@ManotickGuitarTech Thanks so much! Could you share where i can get those dowel? currently i have to make dowel myself because there is not much retailer sell such small dowels
@@lokng4699 our local hardware stores carry dowels that size... you might try online Craft suppliers or Amazon
Why not use a 1/8 drill to make the holes bigger. More consistent.
9:30 for the tuner height.
You could have bought fender locking tuners that would have fit without drilling.
Not my guitar - the owner bought the new tuners. Fender and Squier parts were not always interchangeable as they are now.
Why turn down dowels. Can't just redrill holes?
dont like to jerry rig
What a dirty low down, just get another guitar or keep it stock...
That's the stupidest reasoning I've ever heard. Would you just get a whole new vehicle bc you replaced the tires on the one you currently have? It's quite possible there isn't a guitar that comes exactly as a person wants it. I've replaced many parts on my strat, they're built to be customized by the user.
