Orient’s movement is hacking and handwinding which is so much less of a pain than the SKXs ancient 7S26 movement. The fit and finish seems better on the orients as well but aren’t ISO divers. But who really takes their mechanical watch diving...
The Orient Blue Ray 2 is one of my favourite watches with so many things to like. The strong lume, sleek case design and size is perfect for me. If Orient would make a Ray 2 Pro with sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel and higher quality bracelet, it would be a strong Steinhart competitor that I would buy.
Longisland watch now sells the ray 2 with their own updated sapphire crystal installed plus a strapcode bracelet. That's one option or you can buy a double domed sapphire crystal from crystal times and replace it yourself!
Update, the Ray II arrived this morning! Less than 24 hours from order 🤩 Beautiful watch, and I'm happy to report that the bezel and crown are both easy to move with my small fingers, contrary to what some reviewers have suggested
It's funny these watches have never seen a huge price increase from 10 years ago. Had the first gen mako for like $110 10 years ago and I shocked to see that the price for these new gen watches are around $130 today. That's crazy value right there.
Mark, I watched your chapter ring tutorial fix on the skx007. I did this to my own watch and fixed it perfectly. I thank you for this. Although I didn't buy this watch through you a while ago, my next purchase will be through your store. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia
Great review, and confirms I made the right decision ordering the black Ray II (model FAA02004B9) yesterday from Amazon Australia, arriving today! We don't have much choice here in Oz, with no local Orient distributor. Paid a bit of a premium compared to US prices, but 24-hour turnaround delivered to the door in the middle of lockdown justifies the extra bucks. Couldn't help but notice that you didn't mention (I think, FF'd the video 😉) the shortcomings that other reviewers harp on about, viz: the small difficult to operate crown, and the "cheap" hollow bracelet. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised...
Just ordered today the Blue Ray II after I received my SKX175. Got them both at Long Island Watch of course. The SKX175 came in 3 days after I put in my order. Good service.
Just ordered the Ray II with blue face from you guys yesterday. Saw it originally on the Urban Gentry channel and thought it was great. Can't wait for it to show up. I'll probably watch this video a couple more times this week while I wait for my new watch to arrive. Thanks for showing how it looks with a couple different NATO straps. Probably gonna go with a black and silver to start, but I did like the black/silver/blue combo. They're cheap enough I can do both.
Thanks so much Marc. I've been binge watching your videos for a few months now. I appreciate the close ups and watches that you feature, up and down the price range. After much deliberation purchased my first Orient. a B L U E ray 2. I too am crazed about blue dials.

Hey, Mark, excellent and thorough review. Apart from that, it is great to see the gentleman who sold me two of the watches that I enjoy most -- both from SEIKO. Congrats!

i believed skx will be my next watch but now after seeing this clip .. i like that orient ray.. how do you feel after having orient some time?? no regrets for guying one or??
I have both the Black Ray V1 and the Blue Ray V2. Both from Long Island Watch. Great watches. Question....the day pusher on the Black Ray doesn't screw down and lock so I frequently accidentally change the date. Is that how it is supposed to work or is that a flaw?
The Mako USA II has a thinner sapphire crystal, which exposes the inner bezel edge to being damaged. I have the Ray II, purchased a double dome sapphire from crystaltimes and replaced the bracelet with one from Strapcode, giving it a taper to 18mm at the clasp and the result is a supremely good looking and very comfortable watch.
The gearing that changes the day/date begin to engage the clockwork at 8 p.m. and fully disengage at 4 a.m. According to Orient, the day/date should not be changed during this period or the mechanism may be damaged! Apparently all automatic watches with day or date complications have this caution, although the period of disengagement may be shorter with watches that don't have dual-language day dials.
These videos are not only informative, but they have enormous authenticity and genuine charm. Great work Mark. You're the real deal. Simon. Melbourne Australia.

Great video i needed exactly something like this to make up my mind. I think i want a rey.. now just need to make up my mind on the colour! Both gorgeous watches.
Great video Marc. I really like the black Ray, gonna have to order one, from you of course.
i believed skx will be my next watch but now after seeing this clip .. i like that orient ray.. how do you feel after having orient some time?? no regrets for guying one or??
Raven on camo nylon strap also looks great
I have both the Black Ray V1 and the Blue Ray V2. Both from Long Island Watch. Great watches. Question....the day pusher on the Black Ray doesn't screw down and lock so I frequently accidentally change the date. Is that how it is supposed to work or is that a flaw?
It should screw down. I have a Mako V1 and the day pusher screws out really easily so I've found it unscrewed a few times.
Kyle Weber Thanks. Not sure why but mine will not screw down.
Very good i like, i am planning to purchase both mako and ray raven, there is also in orange dial
which website did u buy the tan color leather strap from? loved the blue tan brown combo ...its fab ...
What about accuracy? Are they accurate?
Using a black watch as a daily watch will the coating rub off
PS. Sry newb questions
Excellent video! Great content. Keep up the good work!
Great video. Just bought the black ray.
I like the styling of the hands on the Mako better and also the Arabic numerals. But at the same time I prefer the bezel on the Ray.
I can’t decide between blue or black!
Beautiful pieces!
Thanks.
Is there any chance Long Island Watch will be carrying the Orient Mako USA II any time soon?
Also, I've been enjoying the frequent uploads lately.
that one is super hard to find
Aymanali Jumma no it's not you can order directly or eBay
Honestly not sure at this time. Thanks for watching.
Links? Love to see the watch too.
What's the difference between Mako and Ray?
I have seen "ray Ravens" in silver s.s. on bracelets, are there any other differences?
Can you please explain what you said about not setting the date between 9pm and 3am?
The gearing that changes the day/date begin to engage the clockwork at 8 p.m. and fully disengage at 4 a.m. According to Orient, the day/date should not be changed during this period or the mechanism may be damaged! Apparently all automatic watches with day or date complications have this caution, although the period of disengagement may be shorter with watches that don't have dual-language day dials.
Hello, I was going to purchase my first watch and I am deciding between these two watches, which one should I get?
It's all about personal preference! Get whichever one you like the most!
Another difference I don't think you mentioned is the Ray has lume on the second hand and the Mako doesn't.
never liked dive watches, but wow they good impressive with those multitone straps!
