  • In today's video, we take a look at the Orient Mako and Ray II wristwatches. These are the generation 2 models, which include the Orient 22 jewel automatic F69 movement. This upgraded movement has hand winding and hacking capability (seconds hand stops when you set the time).
The video covers the 5 base models of the series, including the Ray Raven which is the PVD (black coating) version of the Black Ray.
At under $200, these are extremely affordable divers that look great in any environment, and at the end of the video we will show you how to change the look of the watch with a strap change, and transform it into something new.

I've been having a difficult time choosing whether to go with an SKX or Ray II for my next watch.
This video sealed the deal: Ray II gets the nod.

Matt I like the beveled bezel insert on the orient. It looks more expensive than the more flat one on the skx. How are you liking the watch?

Orient’s movement is hacking and handwinding which is so much less of a pain than the SKXs ancient 7S26 movement. The fit and finish seems better on the orients as well but aren’t ISO divers. But who really takes their mechanical watch diving...

The Orient Blue Ray 2 is one of my favourite watches with so many things to like. The strong lume, sleek case design and size is perfect for me. If Orient would make a Ray 2 Pro with sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel and higher quality bracelet, it would be a strong Steinhart competitor that I would buy.

Great review, and confirms I made the right decision ordering the black Ray II (model FAA02004B9) yesterday from Amazon Australia, arriving today! We don't have much choice here in Oz, with no local Orient distributor. Paid a bit of a premium compared to US prices, but 24-hour turnaround delivered to the door in the middle of lockdown justifies the extra bucks. Couldn't help but notice that you didn't mention (I think, FF'd the video 😉) the shortcomings that other reviewers harp on about, viz: the small difficult to operate crown, and the "cheap" hollow bracelet. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised...

    • @GarrySkipPerkins
      @GarrySkipPerkins 4 роки тому

@@carlosgonzalez7204 No. The dial is the same, but one has a black PVD-coated case and bracelet, while the standard has an un-coated stainless steel case and bracelet (silver-looking). The difference is that one is silver and one is black. Pick the one you like. I beat the crap out of mine for years, and it looks great, but I have always had mine on a bond NATO strap (bluShark). I just like NATO's. Either one is a great watch for the money.
That said, I would recommend that you save up for more expensive (and easier to sell) watches. This is a great beater, but do not buy a bunch of $300-$1000 watches. If you need to sell them you will lose a ton of money. Buy one now, and save money for a few years and buy a nice watch you can sell if you are in trouble (like a Tudor). I hope this virus business does not repeat, but trust me, liquidity is your friend.

I like the styling of the hands on the Mako better and also the Arabic numerals. But at the same time I prefer the bezel on the Ray.

It has arrived and I am a happy camper. Only slight size adjustment was necessary and no links were removed.. I am just glad my wrist wasn't too big.

And there ya go.. That blacked out black face with the two stripe strap is what I've been looking for. Is that the AA02003B on your site? Would love to get a quote on that with that strap.

I own a Seiko PADI prospex Solar Diver, SNE-435.
Absolutely ❤ the watch, and it is very accurate!
I have seen the Orient Ray II, Gen.2, Dive Watch, with the Orange Dial, and am taken by the looks, and also the insane overall value, at around $200!
    I live in Honolulu, Hi.
    Do you ship to Hawaii?
Do you have an Orange Dial Orient Ray II, Gen 2, Dive Watch in stock?

Ciao Marc! very nice video, also because I bought the Blue Ray II from you, and I'm really really happy about it. I think that the blue one looks great on a blue leather strap as well. keep up the good work. ciao, Diego

Good decision to have; just know that from what I've heard, the Orient flight is discontinued so there likely won't be many more.

The Mako USA II has a thinner sapphire crystal, which exposes the inner bezel edge to being damaged. I have the Ray II, purchased a double dome sapphire from crystaltimes and replaced the bracelet with one from Strapcode, giving it a taper to 18mm at the clasp and the result is a supremely good looking and very comfortable watch.

Another difference I don't think you mentioned is the Ray has lume on the second hand and the Mako doesn't.

13:15...also, all the hands are painted black as well. where as the blue and black silver case watches have silver hands. I think that even the rings around the hour markers are painted black vs silver on the other two. As a result of this the hands look smaller at a quick glance on the black ray 2 and the face of the watch looks as if it is larger...meaning, it looks as if the field area of the face is larger than it should be. it's simply an optical illusion because of all the black paint work on the hands and the hour indices. I have one of the ray 2's in black and it took me a bit but I figured out why the hands look smaller and different on my ray 2 than the way the hands look on my SKX007. the hands on my black SKX have the stock hands which are silver so they show up more with even just a little light on them because they reflect the light. not so with the ray 2 in black. small observation but significant nonetheless. can't wait to get a ray 2 in blue.

Hey Mark, nice reviewas always. Anyway, somebody told me that you should not put the watch sideways with the crown downwards because it puts some pressure on it, especialy if the watch is quite heavy and that'll somehow damage the movement overtime. Is it true? I saw you doing it and just had to ask. Thanks!
