David has been on top of his profession for a good fifteen years or more. I saw him for the first time in about 1989/1990 and even then, I couldn't think of a finer musician on the guitar.
We feel very proud and honored in El Salvador since Master Mangoré taught and lived his last years here. I studied plastic arts (paint)at CENAR (National Art Center of E.S.)back in 1990 and many of my classmates had to learn some of Mangore's master pieces so they could graduate from the classical guitar specialty. That means that we have a few skillful guitarrists around here but as unfortunately usual they have no opportunity since there's no support coming from any way.
Thanks for uploading this beautiful piece. Gracias. L.
well a raised fingerboard has it slightly elevated. Making the higher octave register a lot easier because it has more ground for your thumb to anchor upon. It helps with the high notes, 3 octave scaling, etc.
David Russell and all those guys who have longer nails have notorious metallic sound. I am not saying he's bad guitar player. He is one of my favorite guitarists!
@chairlift0 Agustin Pio Barrios Mangore was born in my small town ..his family did not have money to bring him back to Paraguay so he was burried there... soon he will be resting .in the country he loved so much
Barrios, died in misery...enriching our lives with such beutiful guitar pieces! Can some of the connoisseurs give his/her opinion on NiKita Boldyrev interpretation of this piece? it is a studio recording, but I'm still interested on hearing from you.
YEEEEEEEESSSSSSS...SIIIIIII...SIIIIIIIIIMMMMM Y en cualquier idioma... maybe I prefer Williams but I cannot say Russell is not as good as Williams both make me feel in the air when i listen to them.
Actually the fingerboard hasn't been raised so much as the top has been lowered, exposing more of the next and fingerboard. It's kind of misleading that they call it a "raised fingerboard" but oh well.
@falafel1100 That is true, but wouldn't Barrios have played it differently if the piece was meant to be played differently? He was a great guitarist and he probably had the technical skills to do so. After all, if there's a "correct" way to play a piece (I don't think there is one), it's probably its composer the one who knows how, isn't it? (I am not saying that David Russel's version is bad - it's actually one of my favourite interpretations of this piece!)
@falafel1100 I deeply admire Barrios playing style ( /watch?v=le0shPMLffY ). Although it's very unconventional and simple,it carries a lot of emotion. I think that with his performances he was able to deliver the emotions he wanted. His version and the one by David Russel are my favourite. Besides, have you ever heard of Berta Rojas? Her way of playing Barrios is absolutely brilliant ( /watch?v=jt4-Mvbc3NI ). And yes,I study guitar at the music university, although I haven't played this piece yet.
Great performance, nothing to say about it. Please check out the underrated version of a truly great, but apparently underrated guitarist: Alvaro Pierri (based on the numbers of views he gets on youtube).
Dear Friend who likes good music and melody of a high level. Excuse me for sending you messages Without your consent to, But my intention is very good. Having They Noticed I like this piece of music and real Being the author Agustin Pio Barrios''Mangore Nitsuga''''''and I Like His fellow countryman proud of it. I invite you to see Another musical of a very good level, But With A harp, a Paraguayan identity unknown author of the 19th century and in this version is sung by the master
Jitpring, please don't lecture me about the art of the classical guitar, I play that instrument for 28 years on a row. Russell's sound is notoriously metallic and that is due to his long nails. It is harder to play guitar with shorter nails, a combination between a nail and finger flesh.
I don't know how you guys can judge his tone from the awful sound quality in this recording. That being said, I am a big fan of Julian Bream due to his excellent tone control. Russell, Parkening and John Williams are all brilliant players, but when it comes to tone Bream is king.
I would just like to say that mull99 has no idea as to what he's talking about. Also I have sat in on a master class with Russell and seen him live, and I have no idea what you mean when you say he has a 'metallic' tone.
i also play with long nails, as does my teacher, and my teach always goes on about how warm my tone is :) so muli99 no offense but i think u have to rethink ur 28 years knowledge of tone production
Russel is a outstanding player, however, I personally don't enjoy that much the sound of guitar produced by long nails. Unfortunately, Russel has long nails. Shorter nails leaving some room for flesh too, would give warm and mellow sound, especially for this Barrios Vals #3 tune.
Padrino879 i dont know how the hell can u say John Williams plays with no soul. And Russel is DEFINITELY not better than Williams! Both of them have unique style so u can say which YOU like most but that doesnt make him "best"!!!
What a wonderfull piece. Agustin Barrios Mangore writes such great and grand pieces.
so wonderful...everytime I see this and hear him play this song I have teary eyes...my my....

It sounds like two instruments playing at once, it's so amazing.
1er embajador maestro!!! QEPD
David, you are one of the most dazzling guitarists around and you are so sincere. I love your playing.
David has been on top of his profession for a good fifteen years or more. I saw him for the first time in about 1989/1990 and even then, I couldn't think of a finer musician on the guitar.

His right hand is so controlled... what a master! Excellent performance as usual

Wonderful
That concert must be the greatest classical guitar recital ever aired on TV (Spanish TV)
Thanks for uploading this beautiful piece.

Beautifully and sensitively played.
Simply amazing, awesome , master :O one of the best composers of the world!!!!!!!!! :D
Amazing version, for me the best on youtube!!!
david's style is truly commendable
DAVID RUSSELL lot to admire such skill that has

well a raised fingerboard has it slightly elevated. Making the higher octave register a lot easier because it has more ground for your thumb to anchor upon. It helps with the high notes, 3 octave scaling, etc.
Toca bien el hombre. This was nicely played.
David Russell and all those guys who have longer nails have notorious metallic sound. I am not saying he's bad guitar player. He is one of my favorite guitarists!

It is a dream. I love the version by John Williams too, but it's just magic. No words, just emotions. I prefer mr. Russell`s version.
fantastico
Right on!
he did a pretty good job
Amen brother! Ditto that!
YEEEEEEEESSSSSSS...SIIIIIII...SIIIIIIIIIMMMMM Y en cualquier idioma... maybe I prefer Williams but I cannot say Russell is not as good as Williams both make me feel in the air when i listen to them.
best verson
What are the results of a raised fingerboard, why would one use it?
Actually the fingerboard hasn't been raised so much as the top has been lowered, exposing more of the next and fingerboard. It's kind of misleading that they call it a "raised fingerboard" but oh well.
mangore es de paraguay amigos
from a certain angle, i think he's using a guitar with a raised fingerboard
@falafel1100 That is true, but wouldn't Barrios have played it differently if the piece was meant to be played differently? He was a great guitarist and he probably had the technical skills to do so. @cheechee1111 Are you sure that this is how Barrios would have wanted the piece to sound? Then why is Barrios own recording completely different? :-)
@classicalcircle agustin barrios (mangore) died on my country and his buried on my country EL salvador

what exactly is meant by a raised fingerboard, first off =)?

Who is playing the comp guitar ? Double take ???
the comp guitar? he plays it all by himself.
@westryan1 Dropped D...6th string to D
i can't say anything...it's magic!
not music,something better...
John Williams' version does not compare to Barrios' or Pierri's recordings.
Mangoré quiso ser enterrado en El Salvador.
whats the tuning
Drop D
