    Hello Mr. Russell. You play this wonderfull tremolo so nicewith fire but at the same time so very quiet.When I began listening I was in a hurry, but I listened the full 6 minutes and 42 sec. and after that I wrote these words to show you my estimation.
    Now I am putting on my coat for I must be somewhere else to play on my guitar. Byebye .... I am gone. Jan van der Wall.

    @zacrichey 13 років тому

    @PreludePresto I agree with you on that one. People always argue the better player, the truth is there isnt one. They both happen to be masters at guitar, and play in their own way. If you listen to the way the greats play like Bream, Russell, Willams, you notice that they almost play like the way they would act.

  • @wildbillhackett
    @wildbillhackett 12 років тому

    Glad I found this rendition. I was afraid I was the only one playing the opening chords closer to the nut like this. I don't know why so many people insist on playing it further up the neck and doing those ridiculously long stretches for no reason. All it does is make for muffled notes and a flawed performance. I'm pretty sure this is the way Barrios played it too. It just seems so much more natural on the guitar, and the notes are so much fuller sounding.

    Fantastic! No one plays Barrios like Russell!!
    There's definitely some kind of addition on the end of the fretboard to give him the 20th fret for the high C. It looks like it's made out of different material than the fretwire, which is why it's harder to see.
    Supposedly when Williams first recorded the piece, he glued a piece of matchstick to the end of his fingerboard to make the "fret." It's probably something like that...

    Both John Williams and David Russel play this piece perfectly. There are some points at which Russel is better, and some at which Williams is better. Most people cannot compare to either of them, but it's a pleasure to enjoy listening to Barrios, whoever plays his music.

    You're right, there are only 19 full frets. However, there is a smaller 20th "fret" under only the high E string and maybe the B. As I said, it's made of a darker colored material than the rest of the frets, so it's harder to see, but there are several spots in the video where you can see it clearly.

    A dodgy RH thumb (it flexes and bends a lot )and index finger but such an awe inspiring sound and rendition. Regardless of technique it just seems you either can tremelo or you cant. This fine young man CAN. DR is a deeply thoughtful and talented interpreter of music. A major bravo to indeed a superior version...not that its a competition.....but he sure would be a contender.

    Perhaps. Too low video quality for unmistakable conclusions. But look carefully from 5:07 to around 5:19 for a strange 'linear reflection' right where a 20th fret should be, seemingly at the inside of the fretboard's arc. I doubt it would look like a line if it was just some sort of reflection. Plus it stays parallel to the other frets as the camera shifts. Plus the note doesn't sound muffed at all as it ought if played without a fret. So I think he did install a small 'fix' there.

    Well said - a note perfect player but he lacks expression (Williams).
    A guitarist I've been watching lately on here and I have to find out if he has any DVD's is Aniello Desiderio - an absolute monster player, note perfect but with incredible character, fire and grace in his playing.

    @Daim0th Right, that's totally because i've been playing electric guitar for like 8 years. i love electric guitar, but when someone calls david russell a "pussy" then i have no other option to assume that the person is only capable of power chords.

    @Pikangu and IMO, Russell's version has more power, more clarity, a much stronger tone, better sound overall, I can't even compare it to John William's. Even he would say the same.

    I think David is a cleaner player. Romero is faster and has a more flamenco style to his playing classical guitar. I love them both. I can't answer that question to be honest! Once you reach the level of playing of those two men it is no longer a contest. Why do us guitar players have to be so competitive anyways?

    Define musicality, perhaps?
    Just because some one doesn't go out of his way to be expressive doesn't mean that they have no musicality. Often I think the intention of the composer is lost when a performer decides to get too "expressive" a la Bream or Segovia. Of course, these are certainly great performers, and I have enjoyed their playing, but I personally prefer the musicians with a more subtle touch like Russel or Pepe Romero. Barrios' music drips with emotion and doesn't need that much more
