Good morning. Groeten uit Atlanta. Thank you for these tips of how better to behave while on Sint Maarten and how to appreciate how wonderful the experience should be. I have visited 3 times Sint Maarten: 2 were simply day passes from a cruise ship, which gave us the small feel of the island and its beauty and character, and the 3rd time was an entire week spent on Simpson's Bay Lagoon, albeit from the French side near Nettle' Baie. We thoroughly enjoyed much of the free time activities offered on Sint Maarten: beach, shopping, dining, meeting people from around the globe as well as the local people. I enjoyed trying to speak Dutch, but the locals probably didn't like my attempts. On Saint Martin, one could speak English, but I can do that at home. So, I really appreciated the French allowing me to practice my language skills on their side. The French were very accommodating linguistically and didn't mock my accent. Now that over 30 years have passed, I am certain the island has developed even more so than during our visit, and I am eager to return to experience the new activities. Thank you for this video, en haartlijke Dank.
@@ThomasTuttle-v1w so glad you had a wonderful experience here. The reason the Dutch side locals seemed not appreciative of your kind attempt to speak Dutch is because most of us on the Dutch side do not speak it. I hope you find your way back to the island.
I lived in Philipsburg for 8yrs. Daughter is a proud SMX girl!! It really is the friendly island!! Loved the library and the manners they taught my kids. They quickly got accustomed to 'good morning' etc. Even my shy boy would always address Ms. Maryland with a good morning. I really miss that place and the people. ❤
Oh my goodness!! All of these sound just like what we all say where we live! We live on an island on North Carolina’s coast that is definitely tourist driven and these are the very fonts we say to folks! 💚
I love your videos. We have been on a SXM journey. Our favorite part of the island is the French side. We are going in May for our 4th time in two years. Each time we branch out and are more comfortable. The people are great. The food is FANTASTIC. I think there is better food in Marigot and Grand Case than in most of Scotland. Hiked Pic Paradise last time (very challenging). I love St. Martin.
Thank you for the video! I’ve been there 3 times and happy to learn more for my next visit!! Some of these points I did not know about so thank you for that! 😁

Hi again The Traveling Island girl. Which do you recommend to stay as a base to visit the other beaches on the island, Grand case or Orient Bay? how are the two communities after the hurricane and are they both safe? being from Brasil I always worry about that aspect. Thank you
Listen I flew in for the first time ever and I’m so glad I did this is gotta be the best vacation trip I could have ever taken everyone you talk to who is local on the island is super friendly so I’m glad I watched this because it’s crazy to know what the locals think of us tourists you never know what’s out in the world until you try to go for it

I just happened up on your video. We are making our first trip to St.Maarten in March. Thanks for all the tips We plan on a great time while we are there. Our ship docks about 800am and does not leave until about midnight plenty of time to enjoy your beautiful island.
I can't believe you needed to make a video like this....I guess some people can really be clueless. We have been to St. Maarten many times and loved it.
You are so beautiful and upbeat and the sound of your accent is like music to my ears. I will be going on a 8 day carribean cruise Jan. 8th and will be visiting your island. Thankyou for your tips. I am so excited to see the beauty and nature of St. Maarten.
We were there just last week - flew back to USA yesterday. I'm glad to say we didn't do any of these things - we've been there enough on cruises, and this was our first fly-in trip.
I miss living there. Best time of my life. I worked at island pet shop so I was working while living there. Good times. Made lots of friends. I am white and was lovingly called effing whiteboy and Walker Texas ranger by locals even though I'm from North Carolina.
Brilliant video, gorgeous presentation. Immediately subscribed. I’m returning to St Martin next summer, it was so fantastically perfect the first time I know I shall return again too. This next time I’m taking my adult daughter. We both have a lot to look forward too. Ps I thought prices were very good. I shall absolutely be visiting _some_ tourist areas. Mr Teatowel I’m looking at you! 👀
Good day:) we are coming in March and want to explore the island. We would like to explore by ourselves so would scooters, bus or what would be best? What company would you recommend? Thank you!
Basically, bring your own snacks, liquor, and cover-up in public because it's expensive to purchase there due to imported items being expensive. Anticipate power outages and tourist traps.
Hello Traveling Island Girl we made it to St Maarten. We chose an excursion to Orient Beach. It was great. Had no idea the beach next to us was a nude beach and the beach we were on was top optional. I just pretended to be asleep when a lady walked by us without her top and my wife was watching me to make sure !!
Excellent Presentation ❤️ It's Often embarrassing traveling with globally naive tourists. We travel to learn about different cultures and places. I❤️SXM
Will the water taxis be running to Simpson Bay in September? We are coming in on Wonder of the Seas. Any recommendations for Simpson Bay and Pinel Island for a day off the ship?
Thank you for all your Sint Maarten travel tips! I just posted a video about my visit and it was an incredible experience! I love Sint Maarten! Will definitely go back!
Good day! We are thinking of travelling to St. Martin in January, 2022. Trying to decide on what resort to book and whether we should do All inclusive or not. Sonesta Maho Beach (is it too loud with the airport close by) or Divi Little Bay? Or, any other suggestions? I love a nice beach and some "easy" nightly entertainment. Suggestions? Thank you in advance!
Hi Mary, I will be honest and say that I am not a fan of all inclusive hotels or resorts and much prefer a more local experience. All inclusives just don’t bring as much to the island as conventional hotels do. Having said that, I have stayed at Divi and although they are venturing into all-inclusive, they also have regular rooms available. Their beach and pool areas are nice and so are their rooms. My other suggestion is Simpson Bay Resort. It’s close enough to great restos and bars without the noise. La Vista and Royal Palm are also worth a look.
We stayed at Sonesta for a few days during one of our trips. It was very nice, friendly people, lots of food, good pools and everything you would expect from an all inclusive hotel. However, what my husband and I love most is being in more of a “local” setting. We even didn’t rent a car on one trip. We rode the bus or hitched a ride from some of the locals to the grocery store. We absolutely loved it. We love seeing the people, talking to different people and love to see real island living. So it could go either way. We just prefer the non standard touristy atmosphere.
Getting lost is always an adventure and usually leads you to places you would otherwise never see. Your story is an example of how friendly and helpful islanders are.
Excellent video - thank you for all of the good information! We're coming in October, so finding this video now is really perfect timing. We'll definitely bring reef-safe sunscreen, as we do when we visit other Caribbean islands. I'd love to get some good tips from you regarding some good snorkel spots! Thanks again : )
Most people don’t speak Dutch but there are some Dutch expats here and some locals can speak it a little but don’t particularly like the language. I speak it fluently but really dislike it and only use when I must
I’m going to be visiting in May on a cruise and I’m really excited! And I have to admit I do have a habit of not greeting people before asking a question… yeah I know.. i need to work on that. It’s a bad habit. But thanks for this video! I was thinking about just walking around the port and walking to great bay beach and boardwalk from the ship.. looked like a cool place.
... you will love the island ... it is very worth your time to plan out your day ... so much to see in one day ... tip book an excursion now... you can adjust later but for now at least you have a reserved spot ... practice your greetings on ship as well ...
3:25 I'm starting to like this place more and more, finally a place with some standards. When I was in New York there were women marching the street in times square with nothing but panties to deliberately sexually harass people and they thought it was justified
I did not have that experience in St Thomas. Happy you’re visiting St. Maarten and hope you will have a friendlier experience but remember that people are only nice to you if you are respectful and nice to them. Have a great trip.
Your channel is a gem. I'm a jamaican been living abroad for 5 years. Haven't been able to travel and I am visiting soon. I miss the warmth of the Caribbean, both the people and the weather. Foreigners are so cold in this manners and they expect to do that when on vacation hence why they don't greet before they ask questions. When I just moved here I learned really quick not to say hello or good morning, you probably won't get a response. But yea, love your content girly. Miss the Caribbean! 🇯🇲 🇨🇦 💕 💕
Hello, Thank you so much for your videos, I am planning a vacation with friends next month and your videos helped us a lot. One thing I was wondering that you didnt cover on your videos yet, was the best months to visit. I already have booked my vacation and bought tickets for Aug 26th, however, someone just told me that the island closes Aug 10 to September. Is that true? I was told that business, restaurants stores all close in the month of August because of hurricane season. Now Im not sure what to do, would you be able to confirm if this is accurate? Thank you so much in advance.
Hi Gabriel. I must say that I have not heard anything about the island closing. That is complete news to me and highly unlikely. Businesses have really suffered because of this pandemic and a closure at this time will only further hurt the island's economy. Having said that, it is also the reason why I predict that many restaurants and hotels will stay open during August and September this year. A few might close indeed but I don't think they will till September. The only thing you need to make sure of when traveling in August is to get yourself a travel insurance in case you find yourself cancelling at the last minute or cutting your trip short because of a storm or hurricane. That is unfortunately our reality when living in the hurricane belt.
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl ... yep one hurricane can really mess up everything when your an island ... be sure to have good strong reef friendly sun screen in August ... else you will fry ...
Hello! We have some of the same issues!! Except for coconuts! Just discovered your channel and enjoying your videos. I spent some time in St Maarten many years ago... and what a lovely island. I most remember the airport beach!!!
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl you are not being offensive. You are asking tourists to read a little about the island's history, customs etc and be polite and respectful. And you, for being there, you have every right to do that.🌻
Very very good points and as someone who works in the hospitality industry I feel your pain. :) I will be there in a couple of weeks for the first time.Looking forward to it.
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl Thank you so much for your reply. Was going to go down in December 2021 but canceled because of the covid. Canadian government was stressing avoid travel unless necessary. However, No matter what will be coming down December 2022 and staying at the Mary Boons resort. They are pet friendly and wish to bring my dog. Once again thank you so much for your reply. Enjoy your day
Hi Lori. The only reason I haven't yet is because I don't have kids and to be honest I avoid places that are kid-friendly. I will look into this however cause I know a lot of people like yourself do travel with children and would want some more family friendly tips.
I personally did not see SXM as an expensive place. Of course i rejected the beachside villas because of its price and didn't even bother checking the Sonesta's prices as well. I preferred the cost-benefit of Royal Palm + the chinese mini-market nearby. In other words: I like to save money... I figured as much that everything there would be imported but....i heard from a friend which is a former member of the island's Commercial Board that SXM is TAX-FREE for imported goods as long as you are a local or a documented permanent resident. My opinion? You guys managed to find the perfect balance between cost/profit and you do not have to "skin" the tourists when they buy your service/merchandise like they do here in Rio de Janeiro. (How i miss SXM!!!)
I agree. Expensive options do exist on St. Maarten. However, the more local you choose to see, explore and support, the less you will notice the expense. Big tip, stay away from big chain and high end ‘fancy’ restaurants-the locals are excellent cooks and you can find almost any cuisine on the island. My husband found his favorite grilled chicken and barbecue ever on the island.
@@brendonmarchan that’s great. Stay tuned to this channel to be notified of the new guide that is coming out very soon. It’s going to have everything you need to know plus my suggestions for restaurants, activities, and accommodations
Number 2 should be a no brainer, BE POLITE people. Nobody is in such a hurry that can't afford 2 effing seconds to greet someone. And that's something you should use not only when overseas, but also for when you're in your own town. And I just can't stand people that complain all the time. I mean, if you are from NYC and grab a cab, you'll probably be stuck in traffic at anytime of the day and it's okay. But then you travel do Saint Martin and complain that you got stuck during rush hour near the bridge lol BTW, miss you so much!
1. You don't really have much of an accent! If you do, it's lovely! 2. Opps! Hello! How are you! I will have a question in a bit! :) 3. My wife and I are possibly coming to SXM for work. We have lived in Europe and Asia. We want to find ALL those neat local places! 4. I'll try to remain not more than 49% naked in the streets! :) 5. You'll have to help me help my wife to learn to eat fish! 6. Why complain when your on an incredible island! 7. Looking forward to a closer look at island education. 8. I neeeeed sunblock. Now for my question. I fly a paraglider (actually a powered paraglider). Is there any place I can fly on the island? Enjoyed your video! Thanks.
Greg, you had me laughing. Thank you. To answer your question: I have never seen it done here. If someone has, it would be on the French side but I honestly don’t think you can do it here. I hope I’m wrong.
Me as a st.maartener I had to watch this just to be sure I wasn't doing anything wrong even if I been here my whole life😭😭 fun fact i didn't even know we had an accent
Is there no land to grow your own produce at all. There is lot more you could do for yourselves would be more productive, like road maintenance so people come and rent cars and support the island’s in the Caribbean. You should not depend on tourist alone.
Your ignorance of the Caribbean is astounding, dear sir. I do hope you get to visit some day and try to learn about the culture and the differences between the islands before making statements like this.
"When you are here, YOU have an accent"....that was such a good one 😂💯🙌
And so true

A few might close indeed but I don't think they will till September. The only thing you need to make sure of when traveling in August is to get yourself a travel insurance in case you find yourself cancelling at the last minute or cutting your trip short because of a storm or hurricane. That is unfortunately our reality when living in the hurricane belt.
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl thank you!!!
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl ... yep one hurricane can really mess up everything when your an island ... be sure to have good strong reef friendly sun screen in August ... else you will fry ...
Thank you !
You’re welcome ☺️
Thanks so much!
Hello! We have some of the same issues!! Except for coconuts! Just discovered your channel and enjoying your videos. I spent some time in St Maarten many years ago... and what a lovely island. I most remember the airport beach!!!
Yes I agree with you and you got rith ❤👍🌹
You are here completely right in everything!!! Tums up 🆙👍
😅 Thank goodness. I was a little worried about how this one would be received. Thank you 🙏🏾
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl you are not being offensive. You are asking tourists to read a little about the island's history, customs etc and be polite and respectful. And you, for being there, you have every right to do that.🌻
Eita, brasileira aqui? haha
Informative 👍🏻
Thank you
Very very good points and as someone who works in the hospitality industry I feel your pain. :) I will be there in a couple of weeks for the first time.Looking forward to it.
Could you recommend a good local restaurant with good seafood?

As a lical SXMer the best advice is to greet the person before starting a conversation. This simple act goes a very long way.
So normal for us yet a foreign concept for others.
I didn't even think about reef safe sunscreen. I just bought some. We will be at your beautiful island Saturday!
How exciting. I bet you cannot wait.
Great video. Thank you. See ya in January 2024!!
Hello hope your having a lovely day. Been to St Marteens with my daughter 4 times now and it's a dream.
Hi Bill, So happy you love our island St. Maarten/St. Martin. Hope you get to visit again.
Enjoy your day
@@billhoare7404 LOVE that you’re bringing your dog on vacay!!!!
Is English spoken much in the Orient Bay area? Thank you
Most people on the French side of the island (especially those working in restaurants and bars) speak English, that includes Orient Bay.
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl Thank you ...... hope to see you soon.
Can you make a video on kid friendly things to do?
Thank you 😊
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl - Thanks Riselle.
Look...i posted a comment on your last video. (The one with Johnny)
Please take a read if you would. 😁
@@nunobarros3629 I saw it. Thank you so much for your kind words.
Well said miss! You are so right!
Thank you
I love this video soo much !!! I will be visiting on the 20 to the 27 of July 2024 !!!! And it’s my first time ❤
@@brendonmarchan that’s great. Stay tuned to this channel to be notified of the new guide that is coming out very soon. It’s going to have everything you need to know plus my suggestions for restaurants, activities, and accommodations
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl ❤️❤️❤️
excellent.
#9 Respect the island and the people on the island. Don't litter!
AMEN!!!
I complain about leaveing
😂
Number 2 should be a no brainer, BE POLITE people. Nobody is in such a hurry that can't afford 2 effing seconds to greet someone. And that's something you should use not only when overseas, but also for when you're in your own town.
And I just can't stand people that complain all the time. I mean, if you are from NYC and grab a cab, you'll probably be stuck in traffic at anytime of the day and it's okay. But then you travel do Saint Martin and complain that you got stuck during rush hour near the bridge lol
BTW, miss you so much!
Miss you back. It's about time you return. And many thanks for this comment. You are so on point.
1. You don't really have much of an accent! If you do, it's lovely!
2. Opps! Hello! How are you! I will have a question in a bit! :)
3. My wife and I are possibly coming to SXM for work. We have lived in Europe and Asia. We want to find ALL those neat local places!
4. I'll try to remain not more than 49% naked in the streets! :)
Complaining about GEBE is the St Maarten equivalent to the Dutch complaining about the weather in NL. Its almost mandatory....almost.
😆 So true
Well said
This is personal
Those who complain probably never went to Barbados 🇧🇧
I like your accent
😂
Where is this place" 3:01"
Cupecoy
Me as a st.maartener I had to watch this just to be sure I wasn't doing anything wrong even if I been here my whole life😭😭 fun fact i didn't even know we had an accent
Neither did I 😂
Is there no land to grow your own produce at all.
Sir Shutup
So in other words, be a decent human being 🙂
Yes, absolutely. That’s it in a nutshell 😆
@@TheTravelingIslandGirl It's a shame that people have to be told that these things are rude.
