What can I say - I came, I saw, I followed her advice, and I had a marvelous visit. If you're going to shop in Philipsburg in the off season, go on a day when ONE cruise ship is in port. You will have to compete with the cruise passengers, but at least the shops will be open. Often many stores close if there is no cruise ship in port.

You touched on nightlife, but didn't get into specifics. I've read that the dutch side has more nightlife, but what about orient bay? Are you able to give some information about best spots for drinks at night?

Simpson Bay and Maho are the nightlife hotspots. Orient is day time mostly.
