If the Ottawa Senators announced that they were moving into the Carleton Ice House while they waited for their Labreton Flats rink to be built, do you think the NHL would allow it, or would they be moved to Houston or Kansas City the following week? I'm sick to death of the double standard that exists around this one franchise and the lengths they will go to keep this franchise alive well past its expiry date. It is high time to admit that this marriage is over and seek a divorce.
They'll never admit it, the league wants to try and gain in markets like the desert while taking for granted that everyone in Canada is going to watch the games anyway.
The thing is that Arizona doesn’t tax the teams as hard as other markets which is why you see almost no people but the team being still there is that they make more money off of a half empty stadium every night than moving to a market with higher taxes like in Canada. The only place coyotes will go is maybe Houston but idk if they would want another team in Texas
If let's say they had to move while the Labreton arena was being built, they'd more likely move to the TD Place Arena (aka the old Civic Centre). It currently hosts the 67s and used to host the Senators (and interesting fact also hosted the short lived Ottawa Nationals of the WHA). It is not a great arena and a condition of Ottawa rejoining the NHL was the team needed a better rink than the old Civic Centre which is why the Canadian Tire Centre is where it is... aka not an ideal location as it was the only land available they could build on at the time. But, the situation in Arizona is a unique situation as I don't think an NHL team has played in such a small and low capacity arena since the 1950s. This is positively ridiculous! The Hartford Whalers rejoining the NHL is considered a pipedream because they'd play out of a mall arena, but Coyotes playing out of a University Arena is somehow worse than Hartford's XL Center as it can at least hold 15,000 fans at minimum! Hartford's "mall arena" is more respectable than where Arizona plans to play! What a joke! This is a clear double standard by the NHL and there should be ZERO excuse to ever threaten to move a Canadian franchise again if they allow this!

The problem with arizona is they do all there advertising in the east valley but they play more in the west valley. it's so bad to the point I had to ask my class, "dose anyone know we have a professional hockey team" and only 2/34 people knew... most of my school lives 10-15 mins away from the arena but when you ask anyone about hockey in the east valley almost everyone at least knows the coyotes exsit. another problem is there's no good, reliable public transportation to get to the arena.

The Central Hockey League FOLDED in 2014, so apparently they weren't doing great anyway
The fact that Bettman and his goons are willing to keep jumping through hoops for the Coyotes makes no sense. NHL never wanted to help out the Canadian teams this much when they were suffering in the 90's. Hell all of them almost all went bankrupt and they were given less of a chance to survive than Arizona has in 9 years. Houston literally has an owner begging for a team (I'd like the Nordiques back like everyone else just to get a chance to own their sick jerseys but we all know that Houston is #1 on the list for the next franchise) and the NHL wont just rip the Coyotes from the current owners hands for some reason even though they basically COMMITTED AND TRIED TO GET AWAY WITH TAX EVASION.

Ikr, I'm tired bettman's BS that Canadian cities are too small (Quebec city, Saskatoon/Regina, Hamilton, etc.) while "big" places in the US (Florida, Arizona, Buffalo, etc.) somehow fail to have more home fans than away!!!
As a fan, I would absolutely love to go watch an NHL game that has a very small capacity seating. I know that isn't good for the team nor the league, but just on the selfish fan level it would be pretty cool
As a Yotes fan who lives in Phoenix, a smaller capacity arena isn’t the worst thing, we got a lot of empty seats, not to mention the fact that half of the fans every game are wearing the opposing team’s jerseys. It was beautiful when our boys beat the Maple Leafs at home this year, because you got to see a lot of fans in blue jerseys looking like sad pandas! That’s what we live for, to see all of the opposing team’s fans in our house walking out of the building with long faces after one of our rare wins. Will take them all though! Go Yotes!
@@redpillfreedom6692 I'd love to see that, actually. I'm a Coyotes fan who lives in Kansas, and I wouldn't mind driving to Kansas City to see a few games. The NHL wouldn’t allow the Islanders to play a full season in a refurbished 13,900 seat Nassau Coliseum until the second pandemic shortened season in 2020-21. It wasn’t fair to the team and the fans. Barclays Center (not built for hockey) only had a 15,800 seat capacity for hockey. The coliseum was rocking in the 2021 playoffs because Long Island is where the fan base lives. Not NYC. The NHL wants a team in a market that doesn’t give a damn about them in the slightest. It’s a joke.
They’ve been bleeding money since their days in Winnipeg for a long time. They don’t have stability for much of their existence, and that’s depressing to say the least.
With all due respect to the few long suffering Coyotes fans, how long is the league going to keep that team on life support? In any other league, they'd be long gone. It's a long dead franchise. Answer: As long as Bettman is commish, they're not going anywhere. I swear, there's someone who so desperately wants to keep the team there that's they're blackmailing, extorting or bribing him. Maybe it's all 3 because look at the lengths they're going to keep the team there. At this point, it's the only logical conclusion I can come to.
@@MarloSoBalJr that probably true, but still a dumb reason to susadize a team there. And Florida has golf courses too. And beaches. Personaly, I think he buried a few bodies there and the coyotes is the price for silence.
The Monument in Rapid City, South Dakota seats more people than this arena. That building is the home rink for the Coyotes ECHL team. Move the team to Quebec already
If I’ve learned anything in my life, it’s that this whole situation with the coyotes is absolutely ridiculous and that AZ is not a good hockey market. Sure there are fans, but the franchise is run terribly. And just because there may be fans, doesn’t mean the market is good. Yet, Bettman for some reason insists on beating this dead horse, and not only that, then taking the carcass of said horse and bashing nhl fans and the rest of the league with it. I’m sorry, coyotes faithful. But I honestly can’t see a reason why this should continue and I can’t believe we’re still talking about it in 2022
The New York Islanders were not allowed to play more than just the first round in the 13k seated Nassau Coliseum in the 2018 playoffs due to it "not meeting NHL standards." Now the NHL is agreeing to let the Cyotes play in a 5k seated arena for 3-4 years. its a joke. if it goes through I hope they make the playoffs so the NHL loses even more money.
Bettman can make 5 times that amout if he put the team in Quebec. The Quebecor group is in the fortune 500 of the best out their and they built a brand new NHL approved 14000 arena. Great question, but if this happened in Canada Bettman would have moved the team at least a decade ago. I could not see them losing this much money in Winnipeg. No matter what the year(s). Just sad...
The fact of the matter is that Phoenix is the 6-7th largest market in the country, so they should be making a butt-load more revenue... There are no excuses for why they're 💩 broke
The really painful part about this is, there _are_ hockey fans in Arizona. They deserve better than this. Lest we forget, about 15 years ago, one of those fans was a little boy named Auston Matthews...
not even that much, if they have to remove seats to make it "NHL" ready then will be much less. like the 3200 number... for fucks sakes they could move the team to Indianapolis and play in Indiana Farmers Coliseum and have damn near double that amount (6200) lol, and even better move it to Conseco Fieldhouse and be able to have 12,300. god arizona is a bloody joke.

Quebec Ramparts (9230), London Knights, Halifax Mooseheads, Edmonton Oil Kings, Calgary Hitmen, Kitchener Rangers, Spokane Chiefs, Portland Winterhawks, Everett Silvertips, Regina Pats, Moncton Wildcats, Oshawa Generals, and Niagara IceDogs
Screw that the Charlottetown Islanders (QMJHL) would bring in about as much as the Coyotes next year! The city of Charlottetown PEI which has a population of 36,000 people could support this team at this point! What a joke! @@drexxler138 yet here we are with numerous successful NHL franchises in Canada. Business climate isn't part of the criteria for the NHL to approve franchises. That is the decision of the investors or potential ownership.
Unless the Tempe project is approved this plan should not move forward. It would be not only a waste of money and continue the suffering of the fans and the fiscal instability of this franchise. Move the team to Houston or Quebec. Then take the 40mil and build the practice facility with extra public rinks and use the leftovers to start a community hockey program to build the fan base of the future. The best example I can use is Tampa. The Lighting invests heavily in outreach and building roller, outdoor, and ice rinks. They have a team that travels the area and teaches the game. They run excellent summer programs. Conversely, The Tampa Bay Rays baseball team does none of this and finds itself in the same spot as the Coyotes. They never invested in the community or fanbase to build long-term support via grassroots efforts. You have to be part of the community if you want to have a successful long-term sports franchise.
The best move would be playing down in Tucson Arizona. Where there are multiple arenas much bigger. The TCC where the Roadrunners play seat almost double the amount asu would. And Mckale Memorial Center hosts over triple the amount. Just saying there are momentary places in Arizona just as big. They just are in places further from Phoenix and Glendale

"Multi-purpose arena" sounds so bush league, like it's the spare gym at the local highschool where they store the old mats and bleachers they don't use anymore.
Except that it is a brand new, state-of-the art facility. What makes it multipurpose is that it will also be home to the gymnastics and wrestling teams. That is typical fo4 NCAA arenas.
The other 31 teams can opt to buy out those contracts or a "special" draft would take place. Coyotes oughta to fold if Bettman decides to bury this franchise into oblivion
Gary 'Batman' is actually embarrassing the NHL at this point. I cannot believe that a professional sports team is being allowed to get away with ALL this. It's ok to admit defeat and just relocate the team.
That’s true the nhl doesn’t have ownership of the team it’s the investments and 2 billionaires that have committed to desert to keeping the team in Arizona has 4 higher broadcasting revenues here in states Phoenix is big city
Honestly though, which would get larger crowds: Coyotes playing in Arizona or Coyotes playing in a random small Canadian town with like 10 000 population and a home arena of an old outdoor high school hockey rink that has been worn down since the 80s?
I joked about this earlier, but Charlottetown could support this team! They average about 3000 fans a game for the Islanders, I'm sure they could support an NHL team if all it takes is 3500 a game... and that city has a population of 36,000 people. What a joke!
Coyotes are the biggest joke in professional sports. They've had 1 playoff run in over 25 years. What an absolute joke. The fact that the NHL won't just cut ties and admit defeat is so pathetic. Move it to a market that actually wants it.
I have an idea that would make sense. Since the Coyotes have struggled with attendance for so many years, I think it would be interesting to move the team temporarily to Houston or Quebec City to see if the fans would support the team. I don't think there is any question the fans in Quebec would support the team, but uncertain about Houston. This scenario would be similar to how the Montreal Expos played some "home games" in San Juan, Puerto Rico in their last season as the Expos. I don't really think that this will happen, but it would be interesting to see if the fan support would be better in a different city.
Move them temporarily to our new AHL arena being built for the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Should be finished by the start of the season. Only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix. 10k seats.
This franchise will go down in Business Management text books as the model of an exercise in futility. They have surpassed even The Florida Panthers (currently in a Renaissance of their own! But pretty sure when they start losing again, we'll be watching a 3/4 empty arena again; is it even 3/4 full now? PS: When, WHEN, are they going to put their TV camera position in a spot where we can actually watch the game from, instead of Row 20? Holy crap) in hopeless fan support and management.
AZ Vets Memorial Col is a DUMP. There is NO reason at all to throw money at that building. Investing in the ASU building not only improves the ASU hockey program's situation, but finally gets the Coyotes a (temporary) home on the east side of the valley where they should've been in the first place. I really wonder how history would've gone if the Los Arcos site had happened back in 97.
Gary Bettman is willing to severely damage the league to keep one franchise in one metropolitan area. Imagine if he lobbied this damn hard for the other teams in trouble(original Jets/Nordiques/Thrashers) over the years? Imagine signing a player and that player might not even get paid…
@@MarloSoBalJr The issue is that the Footprint Center wasn't built with a hockey rink in mind, thus the sightlines were terrible for hockey. One of the goals was obstructed at one end of the arena because the upper deck hung over the goal.
I've talked about this for years; Bettman will stop at nothing to cement his legacy of making hockey in non-traditional markets work and while it has worked wonderfully in some, he clearly will do whatever to keep it afloat in Arizona. This franchise's a joke and making the whole league look as professional as the ABA in Semi-Pro; let natural selection run its course and kill it already!!
capacity “around 3200, if they take out the stands to build locker rooms” is perhaps the most ridiculous statement I’ve heard in 2022 so far. I’m truly sympathetic to Yotes fans, but good lord, you’ve got to be realistic. Every single thing capable of doing so *has in fact* gone tits-up with this organization. Sell the dang team and either move it, or get dead-serious about walking-the-walk with plans for their future survival, because that’s what it would be if they stay in AZ. When the Minnesota Vikings played at UM for 2 seasons, at least they were already constructing the new building, and the capacity wasn’t laughably below standard. The Yotes don’t even have an agreement with any city for any building yet, much less have they begun to break ground or actually build a place to play hockey. Are they really going to attempt a 3200 capacity arena for 2 full seasons? I acknowledge that the fans who are there are passionate and this is no dig on them, but AZ is already lacking awareness of their existence; Playing in an arena with 1/4 of the capacity of the flipping Wimbledon tennis final is just too sad and too much embarrassment for the league to endure. I’m still in complete disbelief that this is a real conversation that’s actually happening.
This is like the classic movie "Slapshot", where the owner was more interested in the team losing for tax write off purposes. It's incredible that the NHL actually seems okay with this lunacy. Their owner makes the late Harold Ballard look like a genius by comparison. This is like a bad TV show you need to turn off, but can't find the remote.
Arizona, the only place where you can get numerous arenas built for a team nobody wants. This joke of a franchise has been given a ton chances to turn it around and failed horribly. The unstable ownership and mismanagement on every level has made this team an embarrassment to the entire NHL. I do feel bad for the fans that have stayed loyal to such a poorly run team.
I know the NHL does not want to relocate because they lose a lot of money from relocating rather than expanding. So before the situation gets worse like Atlanta where they were forced to move the team right away, Why not have the NHL buy back the team and then Auction the team off to the highest bidder with a few stipulations. Have Quebec, Houston, Kansas City all fight over the team and see what one of them is willing to offer.
There have been teams in various leagues in the past(admittedly the distant past) that would be barnstormers, they’d lack a home park/arena and would always be the road team. Maybe the Coyotes can do this?
@@shaynekempton3368 I never said it was a good idea, but it would still be better than putting them in an arena that’s 1/4 the capacity of the rest of the league

So Winnipeg loses their team for this joke of a franchise for 15 years and this franchise can’t even find a home to play in ,and they get to stay in the league, like what an effing joke, there’s a reason why a Canadian team hasn’t won a Stanley cup since Bettman has been Commissioner of the league. This favouritism for American teams has got to stop
If Toronto didn't have to bankroll teams like Arizona's with our attendance cash then we could probably be having fans in the stands right at this moment.
im still confused why the coyotes cant play at the veterans memorial arena in downtown phoenix for the interim... seats 13,000 people... I'm born and raised in Phoenix and nobody seems to care about this team, I wish they would just move somewhere with a real fan base for the sake of the players. The cardinals play in Glendale too, but always have a packed arena, so saying Glendale is the problem isn't really true- people just don't care.
In 1980 when the Atlanta Flames moved to Calgary, the team played out of the 1950 Stampede Corral with 6,475 seats. It was an old dump of a building and they played there until 1983 when the Saddledome opened. At least the ASU facility is brand new. Slow news day ... pure drama generation. Meh.
To add to the other comment, the league now has a revenue sharing agreement with the players meaning the union gets a say. Players now lose money if the league doesn't make enough money and ticket sales is a big perfect of league revenue. A sold out game for most NHL caliber arenas is roughly $1 million in revenue (in some arenas, it's more) so playing in a tiny venue now hurts the owner and the players.
In 2022 when Squeeky Wheel commented on a logical take about a bad franchise, the comment played out like a weird stan defense squad comment with stupidity all over it. It was an obvious attempt to try and get Bettman to be best buds with them and they failed at that in silence until a few days later when they got called out. At least the responses to this weirdness have common sense. Slow news day ... pure weirdo generation. Meh.
Why don't they use the coyotes as a test bed for a city or 2? Have them play in a place that may be in the running for a possible relocation to see the reception. A place like Portland (whose arena was actually built for a hockey rink) could be a good place to play to see if the people would support a pro hockey team.
Make sure they pay first and last months rent as they don't have good credit. Maybe they need a co-signer. Stating that it was unfortunate human error on not paying taxes is like me telling the government my dog ate my tax bill.
I don't understand why the NHL is so dead set on making Arizona work. Houston is right there and an even bigger market. Didn't the Aeros outdraw the Coyotes?
Not to mention Houston has an owner in waiting, an actual NHL sized arena ready to go, and with Arizona moving to the central this year there would be no realigning of the conference. Add to it, think of the Dallas/Houston natural rivalry. That would be a great series to see.
3200 fans... Dude, the Saskatoon Blades got better attendance than that pre-pandemic, and that's a WHL team that locals don't even think is doing well in attendance numbers. The year they hosted the memorial cup had an average attendance over 6,000. The heritage classic game held in Regina a couple years ago had 33,000 in attendance. The Yotes would be better off playing in a province with a population roughly equaled by the city of Calgary.

First time I'm actually watching a clip from the podcast and Steve's swearing is so funny he has the censor himself on his other channels and for sportsnet but god damn it when he swears he is five times funnier.
The only reason they're in this situation is that their current ownership is incompetent. The tea leaves were out there in 2020 that the City of Glendale may end the lease because they have an out by 2022. The NHL, in an effort to keep the team in the Phoenix market, kept selling this team to rich idiots over and over. The team has changed hands 7 times since moving from Winnipeg. This is a joke, I don't want the Coyotes to relocate but the NHL has not done a good job by this "keep them their at all cost" mentality. And I feel for fans who were told their market is too small or not right for the NHL (like Hamilton, Saskatoon, Quebec City), who have to see this situation go down. It's embarrassing for the league.

The fact that Bettman and his goons are willing to keep jumping through hoops for the Coyotes makes no sense. NHL never wanted to help out the Canadian teams this much when they were suffering in the 90's.

10k seats.
Just move the team to Houston, Quebec City, or legit anywhere else.

Are they really going to attempt a 3200 capacity arena for 2 full seasons? I acknowledge that the fans who are there are passionate and this is no dig on them, but AZ is already lacking awareness of their existence;
Playing in an arena with 1/4 of the capacity of the flipping Wimbledon tennis final is just too sad and too much embarrassment for the league to endure.

Hello Houston.
Meh.
The NHL was not the 5 billion dollar a year top 5 sports league in the world it is now.
