  • I review the Chevy/GMC 1500 2.7L Inline 4 cylinder TURBO L3B engine as a Heavy Duty Mechanic. This 4 cylinder turbo charged engine produced 310 hp and 430lb-ft of torque. I take this truck out on real roads and show you Real World fuel economy (mpg), how fast this engine is and whether or not this 4 cylinder engine is underpowered.

I hope everyone had a good week! Today I am taking this beautiful GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado out on the road for some real world reviews. firstly we talk about the the power and speed of this 4 cylinder engine.
some people seem to think this engine is under powered so I wanted to put that to the test by doing some acceleration test on the highway. I personally thought this small 2.7L turbo charged engine had some good power and some good speed behind it for a pick up truck.
throttle response and drivability of this small engine is actually top notch for being a turbo charged engine. this is most likely because of Gm's special turbo set up almost completely eliminating any turbo lag.
but the big question was the fuel economy of this engine. and to be honest I have to say I am disappointed with the lack of fuel economy. I think I had a good amount of testing and driving to show a good real world fuel economy test and getting only around 15-16mpg is just not that great for such a small engine.
I would have expected closer to 18 mpg but that just didn't happen.
I hope you guys enjoyed the video!

I purchased a 2023 Silverado Custom with the 4 cylinder a couple or so months ago. To step back, when GM first announced they were going to put a 4 cylinder in a Silverado, I thought that choice would destroy the brand. About a year ago, I started researching getting a new vehicle, and I was leaning to a truck - originally either a Taco or a Colorado. That sent me down the path of understanding the four cylinder that GM was using in both the Colorado and the Silverado. Impressed after seeing the research and development, and finding out that Silverado's are cheaper than Colorado's (per bang for the buck), i did a test drive and was sold on the 4 banger. I'm averaging about 19.5 MPG and most of my driving is city. I notice a slight turbo lag, but I think the dual volute design really is what minimizes that effect. It pulls hard when I need to merge or get around an idiot. I'm not at all upset I didn't go for the V-8. Heck, the 5.3L offered is actually considerably weaker than the 2.7L if you check the numbers. No regrets.

I own a 2023 GMC Sierra with the engine and I like it. GM need tbese to sell because the engine emissions are SULEV-30 and the 5.3 is ULEV-50. The 2.7 is helping GM still be able to make and sell V8 even if the fuel mileage isnt there.

Let me be clear, I had an f150 with a 2.7 and was this engine's biggest skeptic, then I drove one. My '22 Sierra has the 2.7, so far (30,000kms) it really has impressed. I tow a boat and camper in the summer and haul drums for work. The 1900lb payload was a big benefit. With the family, bikes, gear and 4400lb trailer loaded this truck didn't struggle at all towing through the hills through Horseshoe Valley and the Kawarthas. The torque is smooth and always there.

@The Getty Adventures it won't be for everyone, but, more torque and less weight than the v8 make it worth a try at least. I know the 5.3 VERY well also, if I was buying again tomorrow I would go with the 2.7.

Fantastic review Alex. It is refreshing to see someone review a new truck without bias that doesn't pander to the mfg looking for video sponsorship. Simplicity definitely equals reliability hence why so many commercial drivers covet older pre emissions motors for their trucks. You make a great point too, why on earth would you sacrifice beefier motors with more displacement than a miniturized overworked runt if you don't gain any benifits such as fuel mileage and reliability. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my truck in to you for repairs you are obviously a straight shooter no BS mechanoc. Again well done. I wish more people would speak truth to power and start boycotting these efeminate trucks with no cajones and make the mfgs realize they are better off giving the conumer what they ask for rather than what Uncle Scam tells them to offer, just sayin, not a great business model if you piss on your customer base.

I think if this the opposite as the comparison between a big gasser like the 7.3 ford vs. the 6.7 diesel. The mileage is a little less in the gasser, but it is $12k cheaper and that buys a lot of fuel. AND the gasser is more reliable, easier, and cheaper to maintain. In this case, you have a motor that saves you $4k up front, but you only get marginal fuel savings and you have a turbo engine that historically don't get the long term high miles of an NA motor. I will never be wooed into a turbo without night and day benefits... I keep my trucks too long.

Put 100k on it in 1 year.
Could knock down 9.5L/100km on the highway at 110km/h
One time I did 1400km on a single tank
The surprising part was in the city. If I didnt jack rabbit and start/stop traffic wasn't heavy, it would get 11L/100km
I disliked the truck vs the GM's, but the engine and transmission were an amazing combo. Towed 11k lbs with it no sweat.
Was also $10k cheaper then a GM truck at the time in comparable spec

Turbo 4 cyl is a dumb idea, huh. Very complex and expensive engine to repair in the long run. A V-8 is simple compared to this turbo direct injection engine.Fuel economy vs repair cost is much more expensive with the 4 cyl. Naturally aspirated V8 engine is the way to go. You don't save anything in fuel costs and repairs are going to be much more expensive.

I had the option of getting the 4 banger when I purchased but didn’t see the advantage. I’ve towed up to the max 9600lbs and the truck still had plenty of power.
