Sarah had such a charming appeal in those days. I always hoped she'd commit herself to more musical theatre productions. It's unbelievable that she's never done another musical since the Broadway Aspects of Love. A real loss. It's always worth remembering that without her there'd be no The Phantom of the Opera!
Am I the only one that finds the music to this eerie? I had an audio tape of when the BYU ambassadors can into my small town. I loved this song as a teen because it felt that the guy I loved gave me sweet glances, his face always appeared in my mind, I prayed we were both singing the same song, but in reality…it was only a glance of eeriness.
There is such beauty, high intelligence, such confidence, such perfection, such depth of personality, there is so much strength to describe about the finer points of excellence in her personal ability to perform. Her expressions, voice, and everything about her seems so much like what I could ever perceive as perfection.
I like her album version of this song more - it has more emotions and she switches to more operatic voice there. But it's really nice to see all these old records, thank you for posting.
A beautiful woman and a beautiful voice that thrills me everytime I hear it! And of course, Sarah is right in her element with songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her performance of Love Changes Everything, another A.L.Webber song from Aspects of Love is unforgettable!
I had never heard Sarah Brightman sing this wonderful song by Andrew Lloyd Webber before I knew she would be great doing it what a beautiful voice and a beautiful person the orchestra was excellent also
My voice coach chose this for me to perform in a pageant when I was 22. I was really bored with the song and thought it would be a snooze to the audience. But I think it's the simplicity that actually makes it harder to sing. 10 years later I get now why she wanted me to do sing this one. I got to scared to hit that high note at the end though and choked on stage! My coach said I was regularly hitting notes higher then that in my warm ups but I just psyched myself out!
In 2015 Mr Rene my Filipino Voice Teacher/Special Needs Teacher taught me this song and how to not be so tensed. Now he is gone to the States with his wife and kids cos cannot get PR in Singapore 🇸🇬 and he has a job there which is at Tucson, Arizona!

In a way Andrew Lloyd Webber is the phantom of the opera because he writes music to shows. Sarah is his Christine because she and her voice gives him inspiration and he writes the music for her just like the actual Phantom does for Christine!! :)
Blah emotions aside, this is Sarah Brightman at her freshest. Unlike in the latter years circa Time to say goodbye when her voice has started deteriorating. I doubt she can sing this now
The melody was written for the original _Jeeves_ and never even made it to rehearsals. It became "When You Want to Fall In Love" in the Marti Webb version of _Song and Dance_, which is on a slightly lower range. "Unexpected Song" was adjusted for Sarah's range.
love it, do you have more? Someone put up more once but it's gone, I'd love 'take that look off your face' video and 'capped teeth' and 'married man' XD and any you have if you do have any :D
This song is really an adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber's "Variations" that he wrote for his brother Julian (who plays cello) and his band in 1977. It's based on the theme by Niccolò Paganini. He later orchestrated it and released it on CD (with a piece by his father - William Lloyd Webber - called "Aurora") in 1986.
@@bryanstratton4645 So the music is a rework of a variation and the song has two sets lyrics, the other version of which I seem to know better then this one. Things you learn
It’s cute and of course the voice is a high soprano but ...... Really this song was more fleshed out and on another level via Bernadette Peters belt soprano voice. Here much of the song sounds like a late 70’s commercial for feminine hygiene or an airline commercial. Brightman excels in the legit soprano rep. When she has to meow through low B’s and the alto range the style becomes ludicrously child like and naive toned. As she employs very little chest voice at all much of the line is utterly lost and the climaxes strange.
Agree. I do like her album version as well which has a more operatic tone, but is still restrained and sounds pretty. Her “opera” singing sounds a bit wonky, and it’s one of the reasons why she never does a great job singing Phantom songs after the first half of the 90s which is a shame.
Never got the hype. Sure, she has a lovely voice, but performances like this are the height of her performance value... no emotion, no conveying of the intent of the song... i’ll take Bernadette Peters at her worst any day, over Sarah at her best... all artifice, no art

Sarah Brightman is incredible, Crystal clear, she makes the hardest of songs sound effortless

She currently doing Sunset Boulevard in Australia.
@@rickardroach9075 I'll bet she loves the fact that Ann Crumb beat her to Sunset Boulevard, too.
The first time I heard Sarah I knew I will never forget that voice! so powerful and at the same time crystal clear, thanks for the vid!
I thought exactly the same!! the greatest inspiration that Andrew had in his life is Sarah.

Truly wonderful. I have always loved this song. And Sarah is just amazing.

I sang this song in my voice lessons and it was actually a really hard song to sing.

Beautiful song. Beautiful voice.

She is actually perfect in this musical
I was in band and we covered this piece and I have always loved this song.
As usual for Sarah, marvelous!
Still very entertaining. Thanks for posting.
Such a lovely song. I used to play it a lot years ago
Subjective! There is nothing missing here. Absolutely great.

lovely
Yes it is.
By far the best version of this song.
Yes it is.
what about Bernadette Peters's version?
She never fails to nail any performance.
this is my vocal teachers favorite version :)
her self-satisfaction destroys any attempt at moving the listener.

thats why he wrote it for Sara. she was his muse.

Blah emotions aside, this is Sarah Brightman at her freshest. Unlike in the latter years circa Time to say goodbye when her voice has started deteriorating. I doubt she can sing this now
Desmond P T at that point she started taking more formal lessons and trying to sound more "Carlotta" than "Christine."
Desmond P T she probably could..the song was written for Marti Webbs voice and Marto Webb has a narrow vocal range
The melody was written for the original _Jeeves_ and never even made it to rehearsals. It became "When You Want to Fall In Love" in the Marti Webb version of _Song and Dance_, which is on a slightly lower range. "Unexpected Song" was adjusted for Sarah's range.

So vanilla. After Bernadette killed it, who else dares to sing it??
Well, she was lovely back then, her voice is lovely here but...something is missing. Compared to Bernadette Peters there are no real emotions here
MaAniFantasy I don't think she really needs any emotion here because the words make up for it.
MaAniFantasy Well stated. Bernadette Peters seems to burst in the radiance of love while she sings this.
+MaAniFantasy good to learn understating though I think

I love Bernadette... but no comparison. Sarah is great in her own right. Please do not compare, they are both fantastic.
This song sounds so much better with just a piano. I really dislike the keyboard part. Great song though.
Sarah is amazing, but I prefer Bernadette Peter's.
Vacant, pedestrian, expected version of Unexpected Song.
Year?
This was the time when opera didn't go to her head(she was never a good opera singer) and was her natural self.
Agree. I do like her album version as well which has a more operatic tone, but is still restrained and sounds pretty. Her “opera” singing sounds a bit wonky, and it’s one of the reasons why she never does a great job singing Phantom songs after the first half of the 90s which is a shame.

I'm bored.
All the “h” in front of her vowels is so unexpected in a singer of this exposure. Amateurish.
