Thanks for being such a humble person Devin. I'm 25 and have wanted to be a filmmaker since age 11. Went through a lot of struggles over the years in my personal life, but it's people like you that share your passion so well, and that inspires me to keep pushing forward. Making my first attempt at a feature film next spring.
Ive been with your channel for awhile now Devin and can I just say that your skills with the glidecam have improved a thousand fold, the shots are alot smoother than when you first started out which is to be expected its just nice to see you grow as a filmmaker, glad I can be here for the ride!
As a filmmaker and camera obsessed person, I love and appreciate these types of videos. You're one of my biggest inspirations, and I could listen to you talk about cameras for hours. Thanks for this Devin!
I hope this series continues. It was awesome to see some more behind the scenes. I love what you do, man. Keep up the awesome work. Might be getting some merch, too. ;)
Thumbs up!! its incredible that you will still spend time helping and communicating with your fans.. Keep it up Devin. Big fan of what y'all are doing.
I really like this vlog because it kind of gives the aspect of the life of a film maker which is amazing to me because I want to be a film maker when I grow up and the main reason I decided that was because of you! Your videos have inspired me so much and I hope I could work with you some day! Please do more of these vlogs because I love them and it inspires me more! :)
I really can't believe you replied! That's amazing! I made a video of me freaking out that's on my channel and if you want you can look at it but once again, thanks for taking the time to reply!
Love the freedom you're giving us to request more insight into your way of life. Personally, I want as much candid footage as you're willing to provide. Discussing things like sponsorships, travel, what you personally enjoy and see when you get to travel to all of these amazing places, and how you bond with the people that you work with. Just the kinds of things I want to see. Keep it up; you're doing hard well, and maintaining a strong community along the way.
Thank you Devin! I love your videos so much! And you do exactly what I would love to do one day. (I know a lot of people say that, but I really do.) I hope to meet you one day. You inspire me and please never stop posting these amazing videos!
Thank you sooo much for doing these. I loved watching this vlog an it is awesome. I've seen all of your main videos and BTS Videos probably ten times each and I look forward to every monday to watch your videos. You are what inspired me to start making videos and I love doing it so much. Thank you for inspiring me to do what I love to do!
devingraham And thanks for the awesome vlog. I think I'm one of your biggest fans. Watched every video, seen every post and even listened to the few interviews speeches that you have done. Now I get to learn your secrets so I will be able to use them in my aspiring career. You are one of the main reasons I'm taking video classes in college right now. And you are my biggest inspiration. I hope I get to meet you and work with you some day. And thanks for responding. I've been waiting for that for about 3 years haha.
Devin, can you please do a few IN DEPTH tutorials on best glidecam practices, including, your preferred settings (drop time, weight, etc.) I've seen some videos saying that a "no drop time" approach is actually usable to get even stabler footage (but it needs to be quite heavy) Also, some more in depth techniques of how to hold, how to pan and tilt, how to pull off certain moves. THIS WOULD BE MASSIVELY APPRECIATED BY A LOT OF US! Thanks, Rory
Thank you so much for these Behind the Scenes, they Help us all a lot and its great to see you work, you are such an inspiration even in Switzerland :) Just bought every single Merch on Vooray!Big Fannn and seeing you in these Vblogs is Amazing, we get to see what you do when you are alone :) Hope to see you on day in Switzerland, if not, ill comme to USA for one of your videos or Talk, Its a Dream and a Must DO! THANK YOU for everything you make us see
Awesome stuff Devin! These tips, videos, adventures and blog posts are constantly making me a better filmmaker, and although I still have a long way to go, I aspire to be someone like you. You are my role model. Thank You!
Devin, this video was great as always. Your blog post was very informative and I strongly agree about the gopro, for the price you can get amazing 4k shots where other cameras can't. Right out of the box you have a great platform for shooting that can do underwater footage stock which looks incredible. The versatility of the camera is amazing with numerous mounts and accesories I highly suggest you take a look at the ribcage system. Where you can modify the camera to accept lenses! Which drastically improves the footage making it a very good camera. Thanks for this contribution to the filmmaking community and I hope to see more videos soon!
Devin I'm getting a stabilizer similar to the glidecam and hope I can get close to as good as you are with getting those steady shots! Watching your videos actually inspired me to go buy one so thank you!
Devin Graham Can't wait! I went to school for video production but life kind of got in the way. I'm trying to get back into it and love the stuff you guys produce. You have definitely motivated me to get back to doing what I love. So excited to see these vlogs!
I just wanted to say Devin, you are a true inspiration and one lucky guy. You get to do what you love every day of your life and get to go and see these stunning places around the world. I am 15 and live in a small town in Colorado, and ever since I saw your first video, I have wanted become a professional photographer and cinematographer. I would love to do what you do. I would love it if you did a post on your blog about lenses. What lenses you use and would recommend for advanced and beginner photographers with dslr's. I do have one question though. When you record your videos, they always seem to be in focus, far and near. How do you create such a short depth of field to the point where almost everything is in focus in the frame? Thanks
Great first vlog! I'd love to see more! I'd be awesome to see a tutorial on how you decide which lenses to use in different situations beyond the basic "low mm for environment wide shot" etc
Hey Devin I loved the tips and I think you should do a blog on the way you walk when holding the glidecam and bending your knees vs not bending your knees. Thx for the tips again!
Thanks for these vids Devin! Will be great to show them to some younger guys that I help mentor, who are into film making and photography. They will get a kick out of these Vlogs for sure. Thx again mate!
Hey Devin, I have a tutorial recommendation. I Have a Glidecam hd 2000 that I've been using with my Canon 6d for the past 2 and a half years, I'd just like to know how you make your footage so smooth. I've watched hundreds of tutorials and I've got it perfectly balanced, but it still looks a little vertically bumpy after running with it for more than five seconds. How long do you usually make cuts with the glidecam? I've tried to walk like a pigeon and mimic your walking technique, I don't know what else I can do? Is the best way always just to slow down the footage from 60 to 30 fps? Also I would absolutely love to know what colour grading techniques you use because your footage is always so beautifully graded.
Im no master like Devin by any means, but some tips: 1) Having a heavier camera helps. This does not mean add weight to the bottom of your glidecam because that will affect your left and right shifting/movement. 2) If you are right handed, hold the handle with your right hand, but with your left, use your thumb and 1 or 2 fingers right below the gimbal/bearing to keep it as gentle and smooth as possible
So to condense it all down. If your just starting out, and budget isn't an issue. These are the cameras I personally would suggest, in order: 1. Canon 5D Mark III 2. Panasonic GH4 3. GoPro 4 Why not the a7s?
JGtheSKAT3R The GH4 is also mirrorless. The jello on the A7s is because of the sensor read speed in 4K readout. It's just not that fast. It's not because it's mirrorless though. Also, it's very rarely noticeable. Granted though, action scenes could be a problem (but then just stick it in APSC mode and jello = gone!)
thats pretty cool, i know almost nothing about the a7s. Ive only used it once at a wedding i shot a while back. amazing what that little package can do
JGtheSKAT3R There's absolutely no relation between Rolling Shutter and the camera being a mirrorless. In fact, every regular DSLR becomes a mirrorless when filming.
Your great personality and magnificent videos are my biggest inspirations. You are always working with all of your passion. Everytime I watch one of your vidz I tend to grab my T4i :-) and try my best to enjoy/listen/apply every precious tip of yours all over again. Like Jason J said I hope to get to work with you one day. Always keeping up on top of the world GREAT JOB DEVIN
devingraham you are a legend :) love your videos. You made me laugh when you spotted those people watching you haha. Keep up the amazing work and look forward to seeing your future videos.
Great that you start out this series. I'll think about what I can suggest you to make tutorials about since I can't cover everything too. I guess you don't have much time so you can't make the videos more comprehensive and informative since it would be much more time consuming. But it would be nice if you would have mentioned what focal lengths your lens has with which you usually shoot on the gildecam with, but also mentioning, that many of your shots are actually slowed down from 60fps to 30 so it looks much more steady (and sometimes even 120fps --> 30?).

I was reading your blog about a year ago. I've read everything, found a lot of interesting facts and tips and tricks... Thanks for "starting" again :P :D
Excellent. I am trying hard to step up my game on my survival channel here, and the glide cam IMHO should do the trick. It seems that my channel has a lot of how to and informative to it, but it needs more art. Monday I'll have the glidecam so we'll see! How to run this stuff helps people like me that didn't go to film school. My channel is a hobby so anything you can give me helps. Thank you for your time. I understand how much of it goes into making films. It's ridiculous.
You're maybe my biggest idol! The behind the scenes videos are always even more interesting than your actual (amazing) work. So l like very much idea of vlogging, these tips and thoughts were great. You should come to Finland we have amazing locations and beautiful nature ;)
very nice, im glad this is a thing now! one question tho, when you adjust the tilt of the preview screen on the red, doesn't that shift the camera's center of mass? So it would throw the glidecam's balance off right?
I love that! Your blog it's AMAZING! devingraham If I have Nikon system for photography (and small camera from Sony, very small - Handycam) but now I want to shoot video what should I do? Sell all system and go to Canon (better option to shot video) or stay at Nikon and try focus on CONTENT? Sorry Devin for this technical question, but I think answer from first hand it's the best.
Your videos are so inspiring. Love the behind the scenes, watched all from the beginning. Also liked how you showed the technique for that shot. For future, have more on techniques on getting shots, how to turn. Is it better to walk slow or slow down video? Keep them coming!
Hey Devin i got a little question. do you stabilize your footage in post. shooting in 6K will probably give you many possibilities to stabilize, wont it? do you think its worth stabilizing 1080p recorded footage in post (Premiere, After Efffects)??
***** What Devin said. Even warp stabilizer in premiere can only do SO MUCH stabilization before you begin to get the yucky warping effects, so you definitely want to avoid unwanted shakes in your production shots. Devin and Glidecam have nearly perfected stabilized handheld shooting!
stevey500 ***** Tobias Polze In the settings for warp stabilizer, you can adjust it so that it wont actually warp it, but shrink the frame in and rotate the video. You can adjust to what extent you want it to do that and you can have it rotate and warp the video if you want. This works best with higher resolution video because it does shrink your video in, so preferably higher than 1080p, and the other problem is the cropping factor of this option.
Awesome stuff man! I absolutely admire what you do. Your stuff is so inspiring and enjoyable to watch. Thank you for all you do. You keep us wanting to improve our own videos and chase our filmmaking dreams. I can't wait to see what comes next!
I love watching your videos. Any kind of videos. I'm actually to see you vlogging cause especially when you're travelling and filming cause it shows more of what it's like in the behind the scenes (:
I was just wondering... It seems incredible to me that you can get such a smooth shot while simply walking forward. I know (although i have never used one) the glide cam helps massively with this but to what extent does Devin stabilise the footage in post?
Hi Devin, You and your videos have me now even be inspired to buy a "steady cam". I decided to get started for a cheap option and that of the Walimax StabyPod S 60cm Carbon and I think this is for my Nikon DSLR the right choice. Greetings from Germany
Hey Devin, fantastic vlog, you are very inspirational. I was wondering if you shoot in 60fps to slow it down and in a sense stabilize the shot or just to capture clear details and keep it in real time? Thanks.
He Devin, i dont know if you have though of this but i run a red MX on a glidecam all the time. I bought a v mount battery and use it as my counter balance and run a cord to the epic to power it. This allows me to cut down weight a ton and be able to run for 2 hours with my bricks. I dont run a side handel with this rig.
Love the behind the scenes. Was wondering how you achieve the look, shutter speed mainly and what stabilizer you use to help even out the frame. I feel like shooting everything at 60fps helps with some shake as well when you slow it down, is this true?
this is really cool. the behind the scenes have been inspiring and it is so cool that I was even more leather. I hope there are many more movies coming and I look at your blog every day :) i'm from Holland so my English is horrible sometimes :(
Do you slow down your footage in post? If so, do you do it by filming at 60 FPS and then conforming to a 24 fps timeline? Love you videos, especially the nature ones!
I seriously love your style of shooting devingraham I just got a Glidecam a couple of days and it's the biggest pain in my ass, but I love it at the same time. I've been balancing non stop trying different things to help by shots become smoother. My problem is I can get in balance with the handle on the right hand side and it's great(ish). I run all the tests like moving it around and what not, but as soon as I pan it over in either direction it tilts hardcore. Do you think it's my gimble that's not centered or am I making a rookie mistake?
+devingraham Sup DST. Quick question. I'm shooting on a Glidecam with a Canon 70D 60p, 125s, F4.0, ISO 100, with a 18-35mm F/1.8 lens. I'll be shooting at a well lit indoor event with lots of people. My concern is focus. I'm a one man band so I don't have anyone to pull focus. What focus setting should I use on my camera when using a Glidecam (Higher Aperture, Manual focus to infinity, Auto Focus, Continuous Auto Focus with Face Detection, etc.)? Thanks for the feedback.
Great Devin ... I'll be watching every one of your VLOGS now. Can you explain how do you edit your videos? How much work is there between the original footage and the edited one? Thanks ! Greetings from Belgium!
Hi Devin, I was wondering if you had any idea on when they might release this new Glidecam and if it had a name yet? I'm hired to use the Glidecam for short films, weddings, and other videos often. Side note, your videos have helped me gain technique on how to stabilize the camera in different conditions with the best possible outcome, so they are much appreciated. Thanks!
Hey Devin, What do you think about the new Brushless Gimbal Systems? Do you think that they could drive manually operated glidecams and stabilizers out of business soon? Or is that technology still too new?
thanks Dev! Same. I have to say it'd mean the world to me if you'd give my channel a look, I think you'd really enjoy my latest project "Short Fall" But either way, I'll be looking forward to seeing more blogs like this one my friend.
would be nice to see your workflow on cutting your material because of these massiv data fiiles in raw. In which program, computer and how you prepare your files (maybe convert them before editing). Very interesting because I want to buy a new cam next year, but my budget is too low for a RED system. maybe not more than 10.000 Euros. Thanks so much for all your infos- I watch all your movies. Fantastic. Greets from Austria/Europe
Hi Devin. LOVE your videos!!!! I see you're using an ultra wide Canon EF prime on the Weapon. When shooting on your own without a focus puller are you using REDs AF system or relying on the wide depth of field offered by the wide angle lenses in order to maintain sharp focus? I always look to see whether you're using focus pullers but can never see them!! Regards. Fiona :-)
Hello ! Maybe you said it but as I'm French I missed it^^ the footages we see are filmed in 60fps, so in this video, is the glidecam sequences speed /2 so that you have a smoother result by getting slower shots ?
Thanks for being such a humble person Devin. I'm 25 and have wanted to be a filmmaker since age 11. Went through a lot of struggles over the years in my personal life, but it's people like you that share your passion so well, and that inspires me to keep pushing forward. Making my first attempt at a feature film next spring.
Thanks so much for the support :)
Ive been with your channel for awhile now Devin and can I just say that your skills with the glidecam have improved a thousand fold, the shots are alot smoother than when you first started out which is to be expected its just nice to see you grow as a filmmaker, glad I can be here for the ride!
Thanks so much for the support, and being along for the journey. Has not been an easy one, but extremely rewarding because of all of you.

Haha, thanks for the support my friend, many more vlogs to come, until you all get sick of them ;) - Devin
I hope this series continues. It was awesome to see some more behind the scenes. I love what you do, man. Keep up the awesome work. Might be getting some merch, too. ;)

I really can't believe you replied! That's amazing! I made a video of me freaking out that's on my channel and if you want you can look at it but once again, thanks for taking the time to reply!
What is the name of the camera that you using???🙏🙏

Finally! Yes, I love this video. I hope more videos like that are coming. It helped me a lot.
I will definitely check out that blog and I'm happy that you keep on doing those Behind the scenes videos.
Devin, I have a question. As a bad-ass glidecam user, do you think the $25 dollar arm brace for the glidecam is worth it?
This is great Devin, thanks a lot for sharing! Awesome work
Back from the hospital now after the seizure the GoPro footage gave me. Nice video though! I love how glide cams make footage so buttery smooth.
Great first vlog! I'd love to see more! I'd be awesome to see a tutorial on how you decide which lenses to use in different situations beyond the basic "low mm for environment wide shot" etc
Everything just perfect! I hope you'll keep doing this Devin! This is helpfull
Hey Devin I loved the tips and I think you should do a blog on the way you walk when holding the glidecam and bending your knees vs not bending your knees. Thx for the tips again!

Yes! Even the shots of the sand in this tutorial, the colour grading is amazing

Holy cool!! Loved seeing it from this perspective. Hopefully there will be more! :D Keep up the great work you guys!
Glad you're vloging now Devin!!
Great! More of these please Devin.
waited a lot for this. keep it up! you are the best!
I love these vlogs! Please keep doing them!
Devin, you are awesome! Keep it up!
Hey thanks :)
Watching a vlog in 4K is the first time for me! haha
So to condense it all down. If your just starting out, and budget isn't an issue. These are the cameras I personally would suggest, in order:
1. Canon 5D Mark III
2. Panasonic GH4
3. GoPro 4
Why not the a7s?
the a7s is such a sick camera, but since its mirrorless, you get ugly jello warping when you move the camera quickly
JGtheSKAT3R Only a bit more than with the 5d.
JGtheSKAT3R The GH4 is also mirrorless. The jello on the A7s is because of the sensor read speed in 4K readout. It's just not that fast. It's not because it's mirrorless though.
Try and shoot it right in production. Stabilization gives it a warp effect. If you do stabilize it, I use Premiere. And use warp stabilizer.
Hi Devin,
You and your videos have me now even be inspired to buy a "steady cam".
I decided to get started for a cheap option and that of the Walimax StabyPod S 60cm Carbon and I think this is for my Nikon DSLR the right choice.
Greetings from Germany
Please do more of this like 2 times a week please it awesome
MORE VLOGS!!!!!!!!!!!
i like you, and your vids Davin :)
Finally! awesome!! Just got HD 4000 today and love it so far!
Hey Devin, fantastic vlog, you are very inspirational. I was wondering if you shoot in 60fps to slow it down and in a sense stabilize the shot or just to capture clear details and keep it in real time? Thanks.
Awesome video as always. Do you mind sharing where this spot is? I feel like going out and adventuring this weekend after watching your vids.
Great! I can't wait for other vlogs! You're a huge inspiration for me! I hope I can meet you one day. A tutorial for color correction would be cool :)
The shots look awesome!
DEVINNNNNNN YOUR SUCH AN ISPIRATION FOR beginner filmers :D
this is really cool. the behind the scenes have been inspiring and it is so cool that I was even more leather. I hope there are many more movies coming and I look at your blog every day :) i'm from Holland so my English is horrible sometimes :(
Is that glidecam coming to NAB 2015??? Looks like it seems to be easier to balance. Looking forward to this love your work Devin.
It is indeed :)
+devingraham Hey Devin, can you make a Video about your GoPros and GoPro Tips please? Greetings from Germany :)
Great work. Also hope to see more of this awesome videos.
Thanks for doing this vlog Devin!!
Devin! Love your stuff. What lens did you use with your RED in this vid? I didn't see it listed on the blog page. Looks beautiful though. 24-70mm II?
Hi Devin! I'm wondering about the new age music, it is so wonderful. What songs / artists is it?
this is great, please do more. I just have a question. How much do you slow down your video?
Alright buddy welcome to the Vlogging world!
I'll watch more vlogs
haha, thanks my friend :)
Thanks for the feedback.
i have the same problem at this very moment, what did you do?
I went with Continuous AF with Face Detection. It worked out well.
Thanks!
Come to Southern Japan some time! There's all kinds of stuff to record here you haven't seen yet! :)
Hey Devin, What do you think about the new Brushless Gimbal Systems? Do you think that they could drive manually operated glidecams and stabilizers out of business soon? Or is that technology still too new?
Awesome Devin. If you don't mind my asking, what color correction software do you use generally?
Adobe Premiere, just basic stuff :)
thanks Dev! Same. I have to say it'd mean the world to me if you'd give my channel a look, I think you'd really enjoy my latest project "Short Fall" But either way, I'll be looking forward to seeing more blogs like this one my friend.
Very cool idea. I want more from that!!
You Da man! Great VLOG.
Keep doing what you do.
Aloha
Thanks heaps Devin! Just wondering how you guys store all your footage when you're on a shoot with such large file sizes?
would be nice to see your workflow on cutting your material because of these massiv data fiiles in raw.
These are so good keep them up!
