“Black Swan” is inspired by a quote: “A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful”. “Black swan” is about their fear that some day they’ll lose their passion for music and this would be their first death. They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them. Ok, so... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelgänger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion. This song became even more heartbreaking for us after their FESTA Dinner 2022, when they announced they’re taking a break from making music as a group. They expressed that they had been feeling lost and unsure of their identity as a group since the MOTS: 7 (this song’s album) release and the plan to take a break had been in place since then. They planned on having their world tour (MOTS Tour, which got canceled due to COVID-19) and then taking a break to work on their solo music, not only to find their unique flavour as artists, but also to rekindle their passion for music. Reading the lyrics for Black Swan, it makes sense that RM cried after writing this song. It expresses their fears at the time, how they felt like they no longer had an identity and feared they’d die if they lost their passion for music. And ohhhh boy, Jimin's dance haha he did train in ballet, albeit very minimally and as part of his main focus, which was contemporary and that's what he mostly trained for during high school. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. This is further highlighted in the 2020 MAMA version of Black Swan, where he does a duet with Jungkook! (here's the link for a breakdown of the moment twitter.com/mintynkks/status/1335236325373448192?s=20&t=2C90i3inGV9MBv5dgoiYQA & twitter.com/sopeshopes/status/1567652963367239680?s=20&t=7xjj1LVpvBUJbNtYOWfnMg… Spoiler alert, since I dunno if you plan to react to the 2020MAMA performance. Which I HIGHLY recommend, it has an amazing performance of Dynamite as well). Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts + hiphop training. +idol training + his contemporary (and minimal ballet and Korean traditional) training. He does a lot of tricking and aerials you could see with his medialuna (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily over rotate and injure your ankles) and with his movements here twitter.com/pjmgem/status/1466261374355402757?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA and here twitter.com/jikookheart/status/1465173437589110788?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA, during the live performance, where he basically does a one-handed cartwheel to cover more space. Black Swan is one of my favourite songs from BTS!
The lyrics are built on Martha Graham world famous choreographer. quote "a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” So it's about being scared of losing the passion for their work/art, what they love. Shadows and light. Black and white. and congratulations on your album ,, looking forward to it too..good luck ,!!!!!💜💜💜💜💜
You had it right in the beginning! Well done for being so perceptive! Please don't worry about the pausing, we appreciate that you go in depth to understand the messages that are always in their movie-like music videos. It shows that you have a real interest in our tannies. Would you be able to do reactions on all the members solos?
There's a quote by a famous dancer, sadly idr her name but she said dancers die twice, once when they no longer feel the music, and that's the more painful. So it's about what would happen if they lost their passion for music, and that would be their 1st death. But it does refer to mental health as do so many of their songs. It would also be detrimental to my mental health if they stopped making music. They've saved me from despair many times. And you're right, I wish more men cared about their mental health and worked on it. Men do not cry or open up as much as they should. I'm always encouraging my male friends to get therapy but they're all against it. I couldn't get my late husband to see a therapist, but after almost 30 years of marriage I finally saw him cry for the 1st time in only the past year before he died. (He died Jan 1 2022 so BTS is helping me get through it and keep going. ) Ty for your reaction and insights. 💜 Good luck on your single, I'll check it when it drops. Borahae 💜
Hi there. I'm sorry to hear about your loss of your husband and I'm glad BTS is there for you as they are for so many of us. I think the dancer who's name you are after is Martha Graham. Borahae. 💜
I love when people catch their metaphors. You got it right away which makes for a great reaction. This is one of my favorites from BTS. The MV is stunning too. Thee way SUGA switches between Korean and English with such ease and purpose ✨chef's kiss✨. All visually stunning in black too 🖤
I'm impressed! You'd be surprised how many people don't pick up on the changing size of the shadow and the "film it now". Well done. And good luck with your upcoming song. 💜😄👍💜
Thank you for your offer to chat. Incidentally you're not the first BTS reactor to make such an offer and I honestly think it speaks volumes of BTS' and ARMY's influence and love for others as well as yours. Would love to see your reaction to Jimin's Hidden Track LETTER on his solo album. His hug and goodbye to ARMY before he leaves for the military,
You will always find a very deep meaning behind most of their songs and this is one of the very reasons for their popularity too that their lyrics are so meaningful 💜 And In my opinion, I haven't heard anything like black swan in the kpop industry like black swan has its own separate fandom because this song literally changed the trajectory of kpop 🔥🔥the instruments, the meaning of this song, the vocals, dance, rap, MV & their lyric delivery just beyond insane 🙌🏻👏🏻🫶🏻
This is absolutely one of the songs the hits me deep in the heart. There is a saying "a dancer dies twice" once when they lose their passion for their dance and then physical death. As a former dancer this is EXACTLY what happened to me, my passion for dance left the harder i tried to pursue it. It still hurts til this day. Especially in this day and age where i can easily be reminded of it by videos. Ugh and the way the end the choreography is another thing that reminds me of my past (this song), they end in the same position they started. I had a performance in 2009 that i did the exact same thing, literally bts is singing my past life story.
Congratulations on your song 👏👏👏👏 This song if i want to put it in my words its like this You live on this life so many people put you into a social frame that kill our souls the shadow is a reflection of our dieing soul which on the end disappeared and we become like zombies
It is also based on the famous ballet Swan Lake. It is a battle between 2 swans, one white/good and a black/evil swan. In most productions the same dancer plays both roles, signifying the battle within oneself between the light and the dark. The shadowself. BTS has a whole series about the shadowself. The BU. The album this comes off of is called Map of the Soul: 7. 😘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜🫰🏻
Please feel free to pause and tell us what you're thinking otherwise it's not so much a reaction as a watching together. I enjoyed listening to your ideas as the video unfolded. Good luck with your music. 👍💜
You should definitely check out some BTS live performances, such as MMA 2019, their grammy performance 2022, Fake Love at billboard music awards 2018...
About mental health it would be nice for you to react to "Magic Shop", "Ephifany", "Mikrokosmos", the messages contained in the lyrics of these songs saved many lives around the world.
I like that you're actually giving BTS a chance and seeing what we see too!! There's all kinds of Kpop groups to get into that are just as amazing. But it's best to start with one, I started with BTS too back in 2017 DNA was my very first BTS song and I'm still here 😂😂❤❤
Very few artists inspire you to think, reflect and connect emotionally........good beats are good but if doesn't follow up with something tangible it doesn't resonate.......
You should react on no more dream, dope, i need you, run, war of hormones, boy in love, N.O, DNA, fake love, just one day, danger, blood sweat and tears many more......
I'm happy that you are in a journey listenin to BTS songs but, I would recommend you watch the whole music videos & the subtitles first, then you break down the lyrics
Can you react to Halazia by Ateez, they're a very impressive group, as a Multistan thought i'd seen it all but everything abt them especially they're MVs are amazing🤩 and the story behind them is even more so✨️👌🏾

So guys are we going to tell him about BU? 😂🫠
Sure. I mean people love to spam all of the same copy and paste comments so that’ll surely come up -_-
I can’t even get into that😭
No, just stick to the black swan ballet and near-breakup of BTS, that's heavy enough.
I'm impressed! You'd be surprised how many people don't pick up on the changing size of the shadow and the "film it now". Well done. And good luck with your upcoming song.
