Your girl sacrificed herself for your tacos and to protect the greed monster. Now you need to open more Ultimate Masters in her memory! RIP Liliana! PRESSING F TO PAY MY RESEPECTS!
Just a little context: So pretty much planeswalkers were godlike beings that can travel across the multiverse onto different planes. Nicol Bolas is the dragon planeswalker that you see in this video, one of the elder dragons who also happens to be a planeswalker (Double OP). A lot of books later (like literally like 20 books later), an event called the Mending happened that had planeswalkers sacrificing their planeswalkers spark to mend rifts in the multiverse that were caused by them jumping around reality a bit too hard. During the Mending, it weakened all existing and future planeswalker sparks everywhere, rending these gods into simply gifted wizards. Liliana is a necromancer and a planeswalker from the new generation who, centuries ago, made a pact with demons to gain immortality, since planeswalkers were no longer godlike. Unenthusiastic about being a servant to the demons, she tries to break the pact while keeping the immortality by killing all the demons who signed the pact, but here's the twist, when the last demon dies there's a fine print that transfers the pact to NICOL BOLAS. During this time Nicol Bolas has been waging a war against numerous planeswalkers, trying to regain his former godlike spark since the Mending. The roster includes a plethora of great characters, but our main protagonists in the recent books are the Gatewatch, a group of planeswalkers sworn to protect the multiverse against the biggest threats led by Gideon Jura who you can see getting his ass pummeled. Liliana, once a member of the Gatewatch (planeswalker power rangers), but she does not wish to die by breaking her contract, so betrays her friends and serves her master Bolas. The video is pretty much Nicol Bolas getting ready to planeshift to Ravnica and Liliana helping him against the Gatewatch trying to stop him. That's why her change of heart is so epic as she literally choses to turn to dust as her immortality fades and using everything she has to keep the oath she made to the Gatewatch and save the Multiverse in the final WAR OF THE SPARKS.
uhm, when will the book be released that tells the story of "war of the sparks" ? how will it be called? actually i'd like to know about every book in magic ... any place where i should start looking?

I wouldn't mind donating to a kickstarter to get an animated series of the entire war of the spark, this was very well done and i hope we keep seeing this kind of beautiful and creative stuff from wotc
I hope the people behind this trailer see all the love of it since its launch. What a wild ride of emotions they managed to put into three minutes, especially the climax at the end!

After 7 hours this video has 4.1 million views compared to the last 9 (back to Kaladesh) trailers which have a combined total of 4.7 million views over almost 3 years. I really hope wotc does more of this
For me, Kaladesh/Aether Revolt was arguably the last of the really nice trailers. There was this golden age from Innistrad to Return to Ravnica, Theros, Tarkir, Zendikar, Shadows and finally Kaladesh, and then those which came after have always been short and underwhelming. Until this.
It helps that this trailer isn't a stilted, janky mess like many of the earlier Wizards CG videos. They've improved greatly. It's still not SquareEnix cutscene quality, but it's very far removed from being their previous "embarrassing for a company of their size" efforts.
Chris Thorn no I never thought any magic video would be on trending any time soon. I definitely feel that older trailers were a bit underwhelming and relied heavily on card art. This made them feel choppy and made it hard for non-franchised people to appreciate the trailer or understand them fully. This trailer on the other hand is made from scratch, has pretty decent cg, conveys emotion, resonates with enfranchised fans, and tells a story that is intriguing to a broader audience. I absolutely love it and hope wotc continues to do more and that they consider expanding outside of the card game.
But it's not for a true TCG, it's for the video game version of MTG, MTG Arena, which having played the open beta feels EXACTLY like Hearthstone, so the Blizzard feel makes sense

When you want to understand whats happening in this trailen you must know Lilianas story. Long time ago Liliana made a pact with Nicol Bolas which would give her immortality and eternal beauty. I mean Liliana is probably a few 100years older than Gideon. Her part of this contract would be whenever Bolas would return she should be the one who commands his army of undead warriors (the dreadhorde). This contract with Bolas can be seen within the lines all over Lilianas body and now they shine brighter than ever because Bolas has returned gaining more and more power. Now unfortunately Bolas has returned and Liliana has to fulfill the contract if she wants to stay alive. We can see her leading the dreadhord thorwards Ravnica killing every living Planeswalker around. 0:57 We can clearly see Liliana questioning her actions but she goes on because she has no other choice. 1:20 Then she sees two youg childres again (older sister and younger brother). This gives her some seriouse flashbacks to her past. Because when Liliana was a child he also had a younger brother. When they were children they had to face war together and unfortunately her little brother died during this events. Liliana couldnt protect her brother and thats why she started doing all this necromancy stuff. This event should have become the legacy of Lilianas later years. 2:04 At this moment Liliana loses it. She raises her Hand and remembers the Oath she has sworn along side the other Planeswalkers to protect the innocent and fight the evil no matter what is costs. She has a change of heart you clearly see it in her eyes. First it was sadness in her eyes then the sadness turns into anger. So she raises her hand and she forces her anger against Bolas who made her do all this terrible things knowing it would kill her. She choose how her stroy would end no beeing the evil but fighting the evil she realise immortality is not worth going this part. 2:30 So when Bolas realises Liliana broke the contrace and turns against him so Bolas also breaks the contract. Which resulting in Liliana loosing her immortality. The lines on her body starting to glow, eventually burning her soul from within ending her life.
War of the Spark is great when you know Lili's personality, because she is usually really self centered and egotistic, she is *NOT* a good person (unlike Gideon) and in order for her to make this kind of sacrifice it means that Bolas did cross several lines. In fact during the book, and the aftermath after Gideon's death, she got completely devastated...and she has spent a chunk of her life fucking over other Planeswalkers. Bolas was so fucking evil he broke Liliana's evil. I loved that the first place she planeswalked to flee was her old home. I think she understood that Bolas was going to kill her and harvest her spark after his victory. She was not going to leave Ravnica alive.
The reason her soul is burning is because she has the Chain Veil, an extremely powerful artifact she acquired much earlier in life. This artifact uses your own life force to boost your magic, and with the Chain Veil, she was able to resist Bolas's control for just longer enough to make sure the Dreadhorde attacked Bolas. But the effort was too much, and it killed her body and soul. If it weren't for Gideon, I don't think even necromancy could have brought her back.
It matter that she made a deal with the demons and the Bolas because she looks pretty dumb otherwise. The deal with demons she could handle, she killed them all to free herself from the contract. A deal with bolas would be like basically agreeing to being a slave. Something she would never do. Also, that is not her using the veil, that is her burning from the contract. She is using the veil to resist a little longer.
Easily one of the most beautiful digital female faces ever rendered. The artists responsible for Liliana's face should get a bonus. A gorgeous trailer overall with perfect music. I wish the talent behind this trailer would be commissioned for a full movie in the MTG universe. Man would that be legendary.
I have been playing Magic The Gathering since 1999... this trailer made me feel like I just opened my first rare from a pack.. What a time to be a MTG player ❤️
I love this. I don't know jack about MTG, the game, its characters, its lore and generally don't GAF about it. But this is so well done I come back and watch it every so often. The way the animators managed to tell a story with no dialogue and limited CGI human animation... It's a masterpiece of show, don't tell many movies would envy.
She became a necromancer centuries before to save her brother, and failed, now she owes her soul to the dragon and commands his army of superzombies in battle against her own allies and friends! Then she see the kids, a girl trying to save her brother... and its too much, if she has to live as a slave she choses to die in defiance instead! The great finale is that the big warrior that the zombies are ganging on is one of her friends that she just betrayed and when the spell is tearing her apart he places his hand in her shoulder and uses his special brand of magic to take the curse himself which tears him apart instead of her setting her free. SHe asks him : "Why?" And he answer with a smile: "Because i trust you" and dies. She then beats the shit out the dragon (who is the Thanos/Darkseid of this multiverse) by unloading friggin zombie-gods (as in actual zombified gods!) on him.
All of you are correct. Liliana sought her quest for power and did some evil things of her own fruition but even the look on her face, the reaction shows us that she rlly felt appalled and taken aback by this war and her past. If it meant to die free or live as a slave she would rather die free and act on her humanity which was sparked by the remembrance of her and her brother when they were young. She nor did anybody else know that Nico had enacted the Price of Betrayal
Weirdly enough, in the horrible books what triggers her is Gideon failing to kill Bolas. She rationalized it as "I wanted to kill Bolas and was waiting for my moment, but at that point I realized my moment was never going to come" but even her knows that she is bullshitting to try on appear more detached than she was.
When her spark ignited when she turned her brother Josu into a lich knight, she eventually came back and essentially killed her brother to get to belzenlok and rid herself of the 'contract' but it defaults to bolas, so she essentially killed her brother only to be forced, by bolas, to kill practically every planeswalker. That was not poggers if I say so myself 😅
Liliana has always been an interesting pick for the poster child of black. Inherently she has been a character who has done whatever it takes to amass the power to prevent what happend to her family, and in doing so has done considerably more and more heinous acts. All in the name of her freedom. Now that her mission has been 'completed' and now her leash is tighter than ever from Bolas' claws, she now digs deep into a quality that is themetically integral to black: Self-Sacrifice. Paying life as a resource has always been a part of black as a color and now it's being well represented with Liliana's likely final act in a blaze of glory, fighting for the freedom she has always wanted, the power to protect her friends.
Just putting this out there, it doesn't have to be a final act-her turn against Bolas freed Gideon Jura, which in turn may allow for her to be saved in any number for Planeswalker-y ways. :P When they all worked together against the Eldrazi, even a power that was as inevitable to them as a hand reaching out to grasp fish in a barrel couldn't stand against them; I'll enjoy seeing what Bolas' answer to that is.
@@maximeleclerc6273 That's a fair point, too, there's always undeath... absolute worst case scenario, even if she died, she'd become a ghost on this plane. Say, how about that? A ghost Planeswalker? Of course, if we got that... I wonder if they'd bring back Elspeth.... 😍
Coming back to this trailer over three years later… still so good. This set is what got me back into MTG after putting it down for years, and even invested in the lore. Just so well done.
A lot of it, for me, has to do with Trailer Girl doing another "epic" cover of an already-emotional pop song. I'm pretty sure it is the same person that did The Crown trailer and the one for the remake of Wrinkle in Time.
@@JadedRaverJewel this set is also really good to get into, many people are saying the game is slowing down which is great for new players actually getting to play lol

Hey captain, didn't think I'd see you here. But since you are, I want you to know that I appreciate you and love your vids. Keep up the good work and hey, if you ever see this comment, maybe say hi to me in your next video.
I've watched this an unhealthy number of times. Liliana is my favorite Planeswalker and necromancer in general fantasy. She's devastatingly beautiful, her power is her own, and she's ambitious enough to make deals with demons to preserve that beauty while having the audacity to destroy them to free herself from the contract (or so she thought). At it's core, the story of Liliana Vess is a tale of an amoral, power hungry, objectively bad person learning the value of sacrifice and service before self, becoming a good person. Gideon's sacrifice changes Liliana forever. "Is it better to be born good or to overcome one's own evil nature through great effort?" - Party Snax
I don't think she's an objectively bad person at all. I think everything she did, she did out of fear of death. After what she saw happen to her brother, she had a legitimate fear of death. That fear lead her to avoid it at all costs, hence making the deals. She's definitely done bad things in her attempts to avoid death but I don't think that makes her bad, I think that makes her human.
@@thenightman9189 I see your point and you're definitely on to something. She might be bad but she's definitely not evil, not evil, not even close. I think she has what people called "buried morality". She does have a moral compass, but like you said, her fear of dying or rather of growing old and ugly (she is quite vain) lead her to bury those morals so she could pursue immortality. But she also has a tendency to do terrible things to people who only mildly inconvenience her. She went through a dark chapter where she flirted with the idea of being evil but it took a whallop upside the head from reality to wake her up, and that's something I can identify with. It wasn't until she realized that her service to herself and to Bolas (because she did definitely enjoy her position on Amonkhet as basically queen of the dead, I mean her card shows her smirking and looking very satisfied as innocent Amonkhet-turned-zombies fan her and feed her grapes) was causing innumerable civilian deaths that she finally decided...maybe death isn't so terrible if you do it in service to others. She knew what would happen the moment she defied him, the contract is clear on that. I think that moment she sees the black haired girl and her little brother get crushed reminds her of her failed attempt to rescue Josue and that was the last straw. The journey from bad to good can be a messy one, but as long as you get there eh?
unknown Unknown I wonder what changed. I mean for the most time she was pretty selfish, she even joined gatewatch for her own agenda. Maybe she realized that bolas wants to collect all the sparks no matter ally or foe.
It was the kids. Because you saw she was tempted to resurrect them, but she turned because she knew there was no bringing them, or her family, back..... and she decided to stop the one whom she decided to heap all the blame
You have to applaud WotC if they do something right. You just have to. So, applaud WotC, you can still deliver good stuff, if you really try hard enough.
With the kind of quality we see here, I really don't see that happening. Too much effort (and resources) for a gamble. A proper short film, though, would be simultaneously amitious and reasonably safe, make fans go wild, and be a decent measure of the interest in a proper movie.
No, you can't fit the massive world of MTG into just one movie. Only long-running series could possibly do this justice, and I don't want it done unless it's done right.

Just a little context:
So pretty much planeswalkers were godlike beings that can travel across the multiverse onto different planes.
Nice recap 👌 (no sarcasm) but it looks like they're already on Ravnica 🤔

After 7 hours this video has 4.1 million views compared to the last 9 (back to Kaladesh) trailers which have a combined total of 4.7 million views over almost 3 years. I really hope wotc does more of this
Rovert Wasyek did you ever think we would have a Magic trailer trending at number 5 on UA-cam?
For me, Kaladesh/Aether Revolt was arguably the last of the really nice trailers. There was this golden age from Innistrad to Return to Ravnica, Theros, Tarkir, Zendikar, Shadows and finally Kaladesh, and then those which came after have always been short and underwhelming. Until this.
It helps that this trailer isn't a stilted, janky mess like many of the earlier Wizards CG videos. They've improved greatly. It's still not SquareEnix cutscene quality, but it's very far removed from being their previous "embarrassing for a company of their size" efforts.
And with good reason! Heck this was so good I sent it to my friends and they don't even play!

I'm keeping a sliver of hope that WoTC will make things right with the community and not try to brush off the people that make this game great (like what was done at the 'fireside').
Please wizards, bring back the old feel that I enjoyed as a kid (7th edition) and don't oversaturate the market nor target specific formats per set. Secret lairs and masters/jumpstart sets are great but you're releasing them too quickly to appeal to a majority crowd of people that probably don't even play the game much. This game has helped me with a lot emotionally due to the GATHERING portion. Don't kill the GATHERING in MtG. Please acknowledge your customers concerns and make things right.
War of the spark had brought the healthiest format for standard......then eldraine happen
War of the Spark was the culmination of an 11 year long plan and it was beautiful. Then one of the designers at WoTC had a thought: "what if we print a card called oko" and everything fell to shit

LILIANA WAS ALWAYS MY FAVORITE PLANESWALKER SHE MAKES BLACK MAGES PROUD TODAY
self sacrifice its not very black, if u truly are a black mage u would dissapointed, as a matter of fact its not black at all, it the most non-black thing possible.
Jabberwock LD clearly you haven’t played much magic my friend! Black mana is all about self sacrifice. Black mana requires life points to do many things like draw cards, destroy permanents, etc. Besides all of that, what Liliana did was command back her own destiny, the most fitting end to a black mage. If you believe what Liliana did was contrary to her colors, then perhaps you too have been blinded by Bolas..
@@logan_out_loud1169 yes but the ultimate goal is to archive power, the only reason to pay life its for ur own sake, not to help anyone, but you. Try to say anything u want, but thats the color identity. If u dont belive me ask anyone else, most will say the same.
Jabberwock LD naw man "greatness at any cost"
Almost 4 years later and this still gets me.
I'd swear Liliana made a pact with 4 demons for her immortality not with Bolas
Gabi24492 yes bit after she killed them the contract went to him
It matter that she made a deal with the demons and the Bolas because she looks pretty dumb otherwise.

Neat touch. The "peasants" that Lilli is watching is her model from Origins with her little brother's model too.
Mind blown!
I thought she was just seeing her past through them.
The Death of the siblings reminds her of her own attempt and failure to save her Brother Josu.

I just realized why Liliana was angry. Because the two kids remind her of her brother
She was angry because she felt/was used. Then decided being free and dead was better than alive and a slave.
Actually that’s that look like her and her brother when they were younger in magic origins
Romeo Belisario 😭 well put lol
This comment & the trailer are making me feel things for cardboard. Q__Q
You kinda make necromancy look like a good thing
Just putting this out there, it doesn't have to be a final act-her turn against Bolas freed Gideon Jura, which in turn may allow for her to be saved in any number for Planeswalker-y ways. :P
When they all worked together against the Eldrazi, even a power that was as inevitable to them as a hand reaching out to grasp fish in a barrel couldn't stand against them; I'll enjoy seeing what Bolas' answer to that is.
@@maximeleclerc6273 That's a fair point, too, there's always undeath... absolute worst case scenario, even if she died, she'd become a ghost on this plane.

This aged poorly :’(
I've watched this an unhealthy number of times.
A trailer for a trading card game has no business being this good. Ugh I love it

2:10 god that expression was perfect, she literally decided to disobey bolas just then and simultaneously realized she would die.

Danzan Sandeev it was the girl and her brother, I bet. It probably reminded her of her and Josu.

I thought the same! I'd pay big bucks to watch a movie with that kind of quality.
- And they got plenty of story in the multiverse :-)
With the kind of quality we see here, I really don't see that happening. Too much effort (and resources) for a gamble. A proper short film, though, would be simultaneously amitious and reasonably safe, make fans go wild, and be a decent measure of the interest in a proper movie.
No, you can't fit the massive world of MTG into just one movie.
Only long-running series could possibly do this justice, and I don't want it done unless it's done right.
