That respectful and contemplative pause at the end is precisely the correct behavior for an audience.
I agree with you 100%, but to be honest I think they just weren't sure he was done : )

Thanks so much, ChamberFest Cleveland, for sponsoring and uploading this master performance! I see from about a hundred comments and 1500 views that you achieved your musical and cultural purpose! This generated much thought and aesthetic response, and reflections on other remembered performances. It helped me in my writing project, just as it helped one woman in the audience to perfect her knitting, and others to muse - "God gives sleep to His beloved"! (Psalm 127:2)
Finally The Goldberg without machine like fireworks,
god bless you. and bach too. it was supernatural.a prayer.
Absolutely stunning
Always a great spiritual experience and a sensual pleasure to hear the Goldbergs well performed.
My favorite Bach UA-cam video, heavenly played and pleasure to watch a virtuoso.
Excellent. A lighter and softer version than the ones I usually prefer. If I had to chose an intepretation that people in crisis or undergoing trauma could find help for healing in, it would be one like this.
It is a very modern presentation with strange timing and strong finger accelerating when touching keys - high dynamic. I think it is great for some people and if they are in the suitable mood.
c magnifique
the return of the Aria, plain, unadorned... how brilliant. how human
VERY NICE..throughout...deeply felt...the 28 th variation "trills" was VERY excellently done..!! as well..segue into the last variations...right to the end...the BEST group of the whole performance..even including the freedom he gave himself in the 29th brilliant variation before the QUODLIBET....making everything sound like "relief that i m home again after a long journey" experience...VERY CONVINCING indeed...and i say that as one that used to play this rather well all my life...and know its intricacies and dangers well...HE IS WORTHY of wide admiration!!
Nice review!
The pace here suits me fine. I taste the notes, each note has an identity but they dance together in harmony. An opening to the spiritual dimension. The Goldberg Variations are Bach's brilliant masterpiece.🙏
Inspirado, sensible, virtuoso, creativo.
Danke 🙏
"Lied"?
Very melodic interpretation, even fast variations sound gentle. ❤
it is a pleasure to hear Goldenbergs well performed.
Yes.
Greetings to you alsi from Croatia. My mother was piano teacher. She went to music school in Zagreb with Višnja Mažuran.

That's "Goldberg."
There's the Blumenthal Inventions, the Lipshitz Suites and the Goldenberg Variations.
@@Pogouldangeliwitz Also, the Bergdorf Variations, to be played in exclusive New York department stores....
Created by the greatest composer of all time, Johannesburg Sebastapol Bacherinni.
This is a wonderful performance, and it reminded me of the tightrope any performer walks in attempting a feat such as performing the Goldbergs. Mr. Rabinovich made a few slips in the performance; nonetheless, we see him as if on a high-wire, with no net, no pole, balancing while doing amazing acrobatics and yes, slipping once or twice, but recovering and persevering to the end, exhausted perhaps, but triumphant And then he comes back to the ground with the Aria da Capo and we too can breath again... beautiful!
I really love this comment, and your positive attitude. A performance doesn't have to be flawless to be deeply emotional and artistically powerful.
we should not be expected to be perfect (although musicians sometimes are)... but we do need to bring our full selves, our real selves, to the music. I think that is what I really appreciate in a performance.
@@DrRickKool Tatiana Nykoleyeva made one mistake in the performance of the Goldbergs that I heard. I treasure that slip-up because she descended from the heavens to prove that she was human and not divine.
What a wonderful description! Thank you.
And yet .. and yet, you made a point to keep track of the slips, and to inform us all that you did. Just saying : )
I feel over doing trills detracts from the expression of one of the most beautiful works of all time.
So thrilled to hear this live tonight!
a strong reading -- in the H. Bloomian sense of misprision, of creative misreading, of readings that produce other readings. bravo
Ein goldener Bach............ Danke und Grüße von Tannhausen....
Wundervoll. Danke
excellent touch, smooth pace
A magnificent performance 👏 👌
Bravo!!!
Delicious ! The works of a composers lives from the gaze that is given to it. It is not limited to what it is, nor to the one who produced it, it is also made by the one who hears it. Music, painting are a space of questioning and meditation where the senses that we attribute to it can come and be done and be undone at any time
I'll always think of Hannibal when i hear this. Beautifully played
Amazing perfomance. Congratulations !
Very nicely played. I prefer the versions f Lang Lang and Andras Schiff. Once Albrecht Schweitzer remaked in his famos book on Bach that the play is more difficult if it is played slowly and that the wonderful music is coming better the slower it can be played. This can rarely be done by the younger artists. In 30 years our gifted player here will bring the fine hidden nuances of these Goldberg variations as performed by Lang Lang and Andras Schiff. I hope.
Superb, masterly presentation.
Astounding performance ❤
Fabulous!!!!!!!!! thank you !!!!!!
Seriously, Seriously good
Indeed a very balanced performance, well done!
Beautifully played - respect...
MARAVILHOSO. Congratulations
I think the regrettable influence of Glenn Gould still extends itself over Bach performances even today.
wonderful!!! BRAVO!!

Great artist!!!
Wonderful!
Excellent interpretation!!!
Giant rendition, Roma, bravo!! Stunning
@@dmitrikostov4803 sorry I don’t speak russian
Bravo !
Super!
Very nice, his style of playing reminded me of Glenn Gould….
Really? I think it is rather in opposition to Gould ideas. Gould is very precise in timing and key pressing. He gives a lot of space for your own feelings. Mr. Roman sounds for me like a jazz musician It is nothing wrong in this, just an observation.
@@knaw35 it wasn’t his plying, but more about his mannerisms…

👍!👍!👍!
What’s with the jacked up seating arrangement?
It was recorded during COVID and the church was only able to accommodate having the piano off to the side of the congregation seating - which is in the round. There were many compromises made in order to present the festival during the summer of 2021, but everyone was so happy to be performing again, it was celebratory in spite of that!
What's with the weirdly unmusical and irrelevant comment?
He's an extremely talented midget
Beatiful.
This piece sounds better in clave, but this one by Roman is very good indeed.
That is when the variation form becomes a sort development, as later mozart used to do. cf Mozart. Anyway,
He is as good as Tatiana Nykoleyeva
I have read that Bach didn't "care for theme and variations" as a musical form, having written only two sets. Does anyone know more about this?
And have you heard the ridiculous anecdote about some nobleman asking Bach to write this to help him overcome insomnia. Was there ever more moronic "origin story"? Could ANYONE fall asleep to this?
The story is TRUE and was related to Bach's first biographer, Forkel by Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach. The commission was not for lullabies but for music to fill a Russian Count's insomniac hours
The patron was the Russian Ambassador to the Court of Frederick the Great, Count Keyserlinck.
The Count rewarded Bach with a lavish Gold Snuff box brimming with Gold Louis d'or coins, an extremely generous payment.
The Count's personal Harpsichordist was Johann Theophilus Goldberg, once a pupil of Bach's .
Read David's Bach Reader, Forkel and Albert Schweizer's Biographer and musicology.
A little knowledge can get you into embarrassing positions.
@@mikelonneke1844 You just said 'The story is true.' So are you saying MY story is true, in which I said "Bach wrote this to help him overcome insomnia"?
You're the one who used the word "lullaby." I merely said 'overcome', which could mean what you said; to "fill the Count's insomniac hours." That is, one way of "overcoming' insomnia is having something to divert you.
What I take you to mean is that the idea that the Gberg variations were meant to help him sleep is false but that they were, in fact, written just so the poor Count could have something to help him while away the hours, not that it was aimed to helping him sleep.
As for your final line about a little knowledge (tho' the original quote is " a little LEARNING is a dangerous thing"), there's little need to be so condescending.
And I'm not in an 'embarrassing" situation. All I did was ask a question seeking, you'll be glad to know, any further info on what looks like a spurious tale. You have now provided that.
Merci!
