Shiratori was not falsely accused. He had actually committed a robbery and murder. And Kobayashi has not betrayed Shiratori. Kobayashi persuades Shiratori to turn himself in to the police. Kobayashi accompanied Shiratori when he turned himself in to the police. It seems that Shiratori did not believe that the occupying forces would free him. When he learned of Japan's defeat in the newspapers, he apparently thought that if the occupying forces found him, he would be executed by them. And Shiratori does not claim self-defense in killing the farmer. His lawyer argued in court that because Shiratori had no intention of killing the farmer, it was not murder but bodily injury resulting in death. The court accepted this and his sentence was commuted from the death penalty to 20 years in prison. Incidentally, as far as I know, Shiratori has not met his wife and daughter since his release from prison.

He was already guilty of his crimes. He would have ran when the farmer came
