Sarah B. is my favorite modern artist! Just a quick note about pronunciation of her last name - it’s “Bah-REHL-ess”.

Thanks for being so kind in your correction of Sarah's last name pronounciation. That's refreshing!

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a handful of people who can match Sarah B.'s technical brilliance in singing this song. They can sing all the correct notes and add all the right flourishes. They may also be able to draw on life experiences to approximate the range of devastating emotions she conveys throughout the song.
But ultimately this is Sarah's baby, and no one will have the same connection to the song that she has. There are a lot of great lyrics that have been written that a writer couldn't quite do justice to vocally. Then someone else does a cover and THAT becomes the memorable version.
But "Gravity" is the rare example of a beautifully written and poignant song sung by an author with an equally beautiful and poignant voice.
Sarah Bareilles is living proof that the greatest instrument, bar none, is the human voice. She owns this song --- her song --- on all levels. Especially the emotions, memories and voice that created it. This is truly soul singing.
Why does the audience sing the second chorus? I think it's because the song resonates deeply with them, and Sarah is gracious and generous enough to share it with them. And they sung it well !! They were also wise enough to let Sarah return to have her "Doooowwwwwn!!" moment.
In an increasingly divisive and isolating world, where loneliness is also a pandemic, that interaction is a beautiful thing. I'm sure that in this COVID-19 era many performing artists are missing such moments of connection.

Hello Freya from a singing teacher in Australia Melbourne. This is one of my favorite songs to sing, so deep and emotional. You've analysed this song perfectly.
There is so much to unpack. Sarah has this ability to connect emotionally and interpretively with lyrics that is so rare. Love your work by the way. Watched your interview with Dr Dan it was great!

I like this song and this performance. I've heard the song before but not Bareilles. My first impression is that she seems "comfortable in her own skin" and so with her singing voice. She is relaxed, but works to get the song across as needed. I like how she reacted to the audience joining in, which I hate btw. She let them go for awhile but then came back in gently but decisively to cue them off. Analysis of Eva Cassidy, Over the Rainbow, would be nice.

Something always brings me back to you
    It never takes too long
No matter what I say or do
I'll still feel you here 'till the moment I'm gone
    You hold me without touch
    You keep me without chains
I never wanted anything so much than to drown in your love
    And not feel your reign
Set me free, leave me be
I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity
Here I am, and I stand
So tall, just the way I'm supposed to be
But you're on to me and all over me
Oh, you loved me 'cause I'm fragile
When I thought that I was strong
But you touch me for a little while
And all my fragile strength is gone
Set me free, leave me be
I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity
Here I am, and I stand
So tall, just the way I'm supposed to be
But you're on to me and all over me
I live here on my knees as I try to make you see
That you're everything I think I need here on the ground
But you're neither friend nor foe though I can't seem to let you go
The one thing that I still know is that you're keeping me down
You're keeping me down, eh ooh
You're on to me, on to me, and all over
Something always brings me back to you
    It never takes too long

I had to pause Freya and check out the actual video - incredible - I was going to say she reminds me a little of Ricki Lee Jones/Judie Tzuke but she's probably even better than they were back in the day.

Hi, Im from India. I have watched few of your videos about vibrato. I have had vibrato, even before I started practicing indan classical music. Right now, when I go higher and higher my voice vibrates too much and I start sounding like Edith piaf. My vocal range starts from G2 and it goes up to D5. Now, would you be able to tell me if that's natural, or if it has to be worked on, or if I have to start singing from my head voice? I'm little puzzled about this.

You kept saying listen but since you paused it 21 times I wasn't able to actually hear. If you're going to stop and talk every 5 seconds at least go back and let someone hear what you're talking about.

Am I alone in this? This whole video you critique in a way that we can learn so much, but your analysis would be so much better if we could hear her singing AFTER you critiqued it. PS: my first video of yours. I'm learning a lot but you're pausing too much, at least without backing up in the video a few seconds. Do you realize you have us backup up hundreds of times in this video to better understand what you're saying? I've backed up hundreds of times in this one video.
