If you're learning Chinese to understand the history/culture/people, then approach it from two channels: 口语 Spoken / 漢字 Characters ... These are two very, very distinct human language abilities and Chinese is a Labyrinth until you're able to read, so the tendency is to focus on characters. This is time consuming, to the tune of years and years, at the cost of speaking skill and simple friendships to practice sentences. Think of 漢字 as a separate universe, spend the time to walk the trails along the stream and follow it through the hills back to the source thousands and thousands of years ago to the 爾雅 erya where the oracle bone carvings turned to seal script and began the journey to what you see on the streets today. If you spend the time to learn how it all came to be, you then follow the path of ancient Buddhism seen in Wu Kong and understand all the mythology and 氣 and relationship to nature that is the basis of Chinese culture.

Today, there are still so many ancient buildings and the environment is so beautiful because there was once a very outstanding mayor here: Geng Yanbo. The ticket for Yungang Grotto is 120 yuan for an adult. I also paid this amount in September as a Chinese citizen. There are cheaper tickets (maybe half price, not sure) for seniors or other type of discount tickets. So it is probably a misunderstanding for 20 yuan for 3 people.
