Welcome to the "Club".........We did that 4 years ago....... We have 3 Japanese Cars in our "Fleet". We won't not be purchasing any more German Vehicles unless their Vintage - pre 2010. Too much Recycled Plastic and Turbos - Planned Obsolescence. The German Vehicles are "Drive Nicer" but the cost of ownership has gone through the ceiling and being able to do your own repairs has become more difficult.
Personally, I would stay away from California Vehicles if you are looking 2000 and newer because those are made specifically for California and have special emissions. Not that you can fix them but may be difficult to find those special parts and some one that knows how to repair them especially now they are +/- 20 years old so engine runs correctly.

Thanks! Yes, it is difficult to maintain and daily drive several German cars that need frequent maintenance and repairs as they age. The Japanese cars just keep going and ask for much less. The catch-22 of this situation is that a used X5 (for example) will be many many thousands less than a comparable year Lexus or Toyota in the initial purchase price. Over time the costs might end up being pretty close overall. It doesn't help with the used car market prices these past four years.

@@BIMMERZEITT It also depends on what you are looking at. At 2015 on Japanese Manufactures started using Turbos (Honda) and Direct Injection (Honda - which had issues with that) and the use of CVT Transmissions (early ones had a lot of issues especially if the fluids were not changed)....
The BMWs have too many "Global Parts" (which is really a "German Thing" about being "Environmentally Friendly") ........ Our son is driving our e91 in which the original German Radiator failed after about 12yrs/140k and I replaced with OEM Behr/Mahle made in SA - South Africa which failed in less than 2yrs/20k - Total Crap - aka "Recycled Plastic"....Tried a Nissens which leaked right out of the box.... I ended putting a Denso Radiator in it.... Go figure.....In 2021, I drove a New 3 Series "Loaner" when we had the e91 serviced at the "Stealer" for a recall. To me, the car was poorly built and drove that way too. Too many electronics. I could tell that this vehicle would be in the Salvage Yard/Crusher in the next +/- 10 years because the repairs would end up costing more the value of the car.

@@MrCuckoobox it is a difficult time with supply chain and quality going down everywhere. But we must keep moving forward and adapt!

@@BIMMERZEITT Yes, I agree. But a lot this is tied to "Saving the Environment" Garbage - which is a ploy for make it "Cheaper and Planned Obsolesce".....I am all for trying to be respectful of the environment and recycle, but when you build parts that fail in 2 years or less and charge a premium for them, and building Vehicles that are going to last 10yr/100k less with avg. cost of $50k that is not being EF.....Sorry. It is screwing the consumer........
It is no different than EVs, which are a Joke. The Government Subsidies are getting ready to end. The Manufactures and the Dealers are going to go Broke because no one wants them for what they are and going to have eat them. The Battery Technology is not where it needs to be to make them cost effective. EVs were out before the gasoline autos were - so they have been around for over 150 years. Why all of the sudden take off or push? "Free Money" - Government Subsidies and Propaganda to push this Agenda.............When you consider, the Strip Mining, Battery Disposal and Generating the Electricity to charge them, they are not better the ICE.

A Subaru with an AMG-licenseplate ... That sounds a bit German.

welcome back! what are your thoughts on the volvo xc70? also, i’d love to hear what you think is the ‘best value’ in euro cars in today’s market.

hey thanks! I don't have first hand experience with the xc70 but I believe the newer ones are better than say, the early 2000's era. I like them. For classic cars the Volvo 240 is a great value at the moment. Robust but not fast or sporty by any means. For modern cars, an E70 X5 is tough to beat in terms of value. You can get a really nice example for $7,500. The parts prices and repairs will eat away at the value over time though, some failures can be very financially painful.
