- Step inside the colorful and art-filled world of Barrie Benson! The Charlotte, North Carolina based interior designer is known for her tasteful and timeless knack for mixing and matching - her home is no exception! Nestled back on the property, the modern home nods to true 1950’s architecture and pays homage to the likes of architect Richard Neutra and Eichler inspired details. Through the double doors to the foyer, the home’s moody exterior makes its way inside. Upon your first steps in, you’re greeted with Benson’s vast art collection and her very own wallcovering she created in collaboration with creative partner Chandra Johnson (the two make up Peg Norris) with artist Anne Lemanski for Schumacher. Benson and her architect husband decided to open the foyer by knocking out a formerly large coat closet and creating a small niche to bring a bit of airiness to the Japanese modern space.
Despite being a classic ‘50s home, when Benson and her husband purchased the house it was an ode to the 1970s with white carpet abound and hanging plants. One of the first big changes they made was laying down hardwood flooring and adding color and texture in lieu of the formerly all-white interior. To ground the space in the living room, Benson used a graphic black and white rug to tie together her plaids, florals, and velvets. It doesn’t take long to see what her color palette of choice is - all things red! From faded reds, coral reds, orange reds, even purple reds, Benson weaves these colors throughout the home from bold uses to the smallest of details.

I really love this house. I love the indoor planter near the front door. I used to see this so often growing up in Southern California. I love the idea of pumping out the wall 4 to 5 feet to create that closet behind the bed. That is brilliant.

Barrie, Thank you for seeing the potential in that house. Love this tour. I could live in that house easily. I love how you moved the colors around....that resonates with me . We bought a 50s house over twenty years ago. Same question I heard often was "when are you starting demo?" Everyone , including the realtor, said it was a teardown. Now it is the most adorable house on our street. Trying to not fit into any mold or trend often leads us to our authentic style.

I’m a Charlotte Rose cut and put in a vase in Los Angeles decades ago. My husband and I built a home on a stretch of land outside LA in a gated vista community. Georgian Revival with Doric columns, et al. This Lady chose a modern house like those that dot the landscape here, and I chose to build a house, that dot the landscape in the South. But, everything she finds dear…China, silver, crystal, and reds and blues galleries, on and on, are dear to me. Modern, or Classic, the Southern girl has the same sensibilities. Really enjoyed this gracious lady, and her dogs!

Wow, this looks so similar to house I grew up in, same type of architecture, entry doors, fireplace. Big windows, sliders to outside and we too had that slate tile in our entry way. WOW, wish I had that house now, so many memories flooding back.
