Great retrospective, Jim! I totally forgot about the 70s TV series, and I never even knew about the RETURN of POTAs animated series. I just couldn't work up much excitement for the Mark Walhberg film version, but I have enjoyed the previous Andy Serkis trilogy of films. As for the comics, I have never owned or read any of the 70s Marvel iterations, though I've always been somewhat curious. To be honest, I rarely came across them in the wild. The Marvel magazines under the Curtis imprint always had great cover art, IMO. Great video!
always an education, which I appreciate....born in 61...as a kid all we could hope for was a Godzilla movie or some other dinosaur like monster until the Planet of the Apes....we loved the Godzilla movies as the dialog audio never matched the mouth as they were always Japanese releases but they were fun
loved the recent film - had real emotional heft. I collected the UK marvel comic for a while - very easy to pick up in charity shops - reprints from the Curtis magazines
The costume design/depiction of the Apes in the original movies (1970s) is vastly superior than the modern versions.
There was also a Star Trek Planet of the Apes crossover in the comics, fun read!
Marvel did a very different adaptation of Battle, too! #29 is the only one that didn't feature a movie adaptation or tie-in.
Born in 66 i think you are correct , as preteen the ape movies were special.

Jim, regarding Marvel magazines like Planet of the Apes, Curtis was the distributor -- NOT a Marvel brand. From the GCD: "This is a brand emblem for distributor Curtis Magazines and not a publisher's brand emblem."
I remember going to see the 2001 PotA movie for a charity event. On the ticket stub someone had accidentally noted George Clooney in the cast. I saw the movie thinking Clooney was going to turn up….
There is a subtle bias against magazines by many comics fans, who consider them "not really comics" and not worthy of tracking down and reading. Hence, they miss out on excellent original POTA stories in the Marvel magazine. And let's not forget that early appearances of significant characters occurred in the magazines, like the first few Star Lord stories and the fourth Punisher (and first origin) story, all in Marvel Preview.
PotA is a guilty pleasure. Currently working on getting the entire Malibu run. It's a weird book and there are some sweet covers but most of the covers are just terrible. LOL The current Marvel book was really good. I enjoyed it!
Have fond memories of watching the original films on weekend afternoon TV in the mid- to late '70's. For the time, the make-up effects were very good, but, unlike Trevor Slattery, I could easily tell that it was humans in make-up. 🙂 Much prefer the current CGI versions; Andy Serkis is freakin' talented!
