How to Connect All The Planet of the Apes Movies - Full Timeline

- The chronology of the Planet of the Apes movies is incredibly murky. This is how I managed to connect all the movies.

I always thought the events of the new trilogy were how the timeline originally went before Cornelius and his wife went back in time.
The time travel thing with apes was crazy. Apes inventing time travel
This is the timeline I subscribe to
Doesn't make any sense at all. In the original, nukes destroyed the world. No nukes in new movies.
@@Eagle45678910 That's true. But that's what the apes believed happened. No real proof of what happened thousands of years ago, from their perspective. It's a wonky timeline, like Terminator, nothing really fits right.
@@Eagle45678910 the video goes over this. Taylor thinks it was nukes. we have no reason to assume he was right
One could argue that the original movie is the first timeline, with the Caesar trilogy echoing it in a different timeline caused by all the time travel in the original sequels?
Yes
Your timeline makes logical sense to tie this universe together. Thanks!
gonna have to take the agree to disagree option here, in the Rise franchise the icarus left earth much later than the 1970's departure in the original, and thus while it's certainly a nod to the original movie it's not the same ship lmao
This franchise is full of huge time discrepancies. How is Beneath set 33 years before the original movie despite being set right afterwards. Is it really to hard to accept that Rise, despite one time discrepancy, could easily be a prequel to the original?
@@icemav5740 yeah it is too hard. sure there were already time discrepancies in the original, but trying to merge the original and reboot series' into one narrative compounds those discrepancies to an unreasonable degree. like to turn your argument back around on you, the franchise is already full of huge time discrepancies, do we really need to add more?
@@blackmagnetictape I’m saying that you accept the discrepancies in the originals but not the new films? Why is that
Look at it like terminator. You can postpone and change the events only to have them happen later down the line with similar scenarios
@@icemav5740 "accept" is a strong word. i don't like them, but they're unavoidably there, what ya gonna do. the original series would undeniably be better if it had less inconsistencies and i don't think it's a good idea to add more by unnecessarily trying to merge two timelines that were clearly meant to be separate.
@xEvilxPwNeR the terminator franchise is an even worse time-travel clusterfuck than POTA, lol i don't think that's the comparison you want to make if you want to convince me it's a good idea to try to link the two POTA timelines.
I saw the tim burton planet of the apes and while I didn't HATE it, I was so thoroughly confused by the twist ending and I assume I wasn't the only one. I bring that up as I only just RECENTLY found a video that explained just what the heck happened in a way that I could understand.
There are several books canon to the 2001's Tim Burton remake which explained what happen both before the events of the movies (between the moment the protagonnist leave his spaceship and crash on the planet), and after (between the moment the protagonnist leave the planet after the final battle and crash into altered New York).
The movie is good, but the last scene indeed just made not much sense and is confuzing.
Obviousely, they tried to replicate the Liberty's Statue scene from the first ever original movie but with Abraham Lincoln's statue.
But that just don't work sadly.
Giving this a big Proximus style “Yes!” Good job. This is the most reasonable timeline imo. I have always been shocked by those who didn’t figure this out. Most hadn’t seen half of the OG sequels, so that may be part of peoples confusion. This lays it out well. Good job, thank you. Now I can just share this with a friend rather than making something that (again seems pretty straight forward) clear to them.
The original film does explain that humans destroyed themselves with nukes. The humans in the original sequel were disfigured by the radiation and were able to telepathically communicate with each other. They also talked about how a virus killed all dogs and cats which led humans to domesticate apes, which lead them to becoming slaves, and they adapted and grew smarter. But when they traveled back in time, it caused the original events to happen much more rapidly. The way I see it, Rise - War is set in another timeline, a timeline that was created as a result of the Icarus being used to travel backwards through time, instead of forward. I like how they set up their multiverse, but I hate that it's a catch all explanation to every film nowadays. It feels lazy. Just say it's a reboot.
@David, I thought Rise -War were reboots. Where is everyone getting the idea that they're supposed to connect?
@@mrsnaythomas9773my opinion too, it's a reboot, not prequels, looks like we will have 3 trilogies in this new reboot, with 9 titled as Planet of the Apes
@@mrsnaythomas9773because it is fun, we know they are not connected, yet videos like this are enjoyable and fun to watch that's it
There are no prequels in the original trilogy, that's like saying Back to the Future 3 is a prequel because they went to 1885. Characters from the 1968 film went back in time so it's still a continuation of the original.
9:03 I disagree that the 3 movies after Beneath TPOTA is are prequels! These characters exist come from the first two movies and travel back in time that’s not the same as a movie being set before the initial MCs existed or are a younger version of themselves
I mean if apes invented time travel that would be awesome but I think pota 3 and 4 are just terrible
This is insane!! Incredible production and severely underrated, hope you get more views!
Why people feel this urge to connect completely unrelated thing?
It's a reboot series. This was stated by the producers themselves. You can compare them, it's fun.
The end.
You forgot to elaborate on Caesar speaking the word “no”. I got what you were going for when you said “or is it”. But you never returned to that topic when you started talking about the reboot trilogy. I understand that the apes said the first word that was spoken was “no “ by Cesar in the reboot trilogy was actually the starting point chronological wise.
in Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Cornelius explained that the first Ape to talk was Aldo not Caesar
Who cares
Hear me out …. He was wrong. Not hard to explain
Yeah but who cares honestly
@@mrwhatif618 As a fan who grew up with the true original Apes films - I care. These new films cannot fit with the 1968 original, and have nothing to do with it.
@@lemontears8516 Not buying that he was wrong. The original series is the true account. These new films are a completely different thing, having nothing to do with the 1968 classic.
I'm not going to lie, but this guy gave me Matt pat vibes in a good way
my favourite franchise of all time your a legend
Actually in Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Cornelius said that the first ape to ever say no was named Aldo.
Also the Icarus was launched in 73, but in the 2010s in Rise so that doesn’t makes sense
Cornelius obviously lied or The legend of the first got Rewriten you forget these are evolved apes that have their own simian cultures
Cornelius wasn’t there
@@figmilleniumin Escape he is, and he tells the story of the world's future, or their past
beautiful video bro, this deserves more views
Great job trying to make sense of something so difficult like this.
Best explanation of thr movies I've come across so far. A lot of theories and interpretation but this is the one that has all the films set in a timeline/timelines that makes the most sense 👌🏽
Rise, Dawn, War and Kingdom are NOT a literal prequel to the 1968 Planet Of The Apes they do references to them but thats it
Nope they aren't the stories also are completely different as well.
It’s a reboot clearly. Would be too coincidental for the names Caesar , Nova, Cornelius, Blue eyes all to have been used again at some point in the timeline
Shut up no one cares
it’s wouldn’t tho the apes could keep names in the family
Also, there's a trope of history repeating itself. The same way that themes and story points can mirror each other across different times and films. So can characters.
I think there are four separate continuities:-
1. The original stands on its own. Taylor is well aware they are travelling into the far future on a one way ticket out of the 20th Century.
2. Beneath, Escape, Conquest & Battle. These all fit together. Brent is on a rescue mission for Taylor's ship. But that's impossible to be the Taylor of the original, as they were on a one way journey and didn't expect to be coming back. So Beneath is a new continuity, with Brent coming after another version of Taylor in a different continuity.
3. Burton's. Obviously stands alone as a reboot.
4. Rise, Dawn, War & Kingdom. The story of Caesar for the initial trilogy and now continuing on in the future of that same world...
i love this guys enthusiasm
Great video!!! watched thru all of them and am working on my own Apes video and this was awesome to watch!!! the entire time i was watching i was trying to spin together how the timelines would work out together.
Also! have you seen the DVD insert of the Burton timeline for just that movie ? it’s ridiculous and convoluted and very funny to try and rationalize
Can’t wait to see it tomorrow! May 8th 7pm IMAX 🍿🍿
Thumbs up? (No spoilers plz)
@@zg9445by me, it’s 8/10
Good video, i can finally understand the timeline alittle better
The exact same theory I've had since watching Dawn in the cinema, well put together video mate
The "prequels" as you say, are not prequels, they are sequels as they take place after Taylor, Cornelius and Zira going back in time does not change that.
Now connect the new series to the TV live-action series and TV animated series.
Also, connect it to the book while you're at it.
What can be said as funfact with the 1970's TV Live Action series (which is sadly incomplete and doesn't have an end) is that it was mean first to be canon to the initial movies series from 1968's.
But ultimatly, more or less at the last minutes, the producers decide to made it its own apart things in its own proper canon.
And then decide to scrap, remove and cut all the references and others links to the 5 first movies.
But there were unable to scrap them all, so there still references and links in the series.
Which made the final results confuzing and very inconsistent.
With too much and important inconsistencies that the TV Live Action series cannot take place in the first timeline.
Yet, many people still think by error the series is canon to it while it isn't.
What a wonderful video!
Very well done. Thank you!
The balls with that Disney executives joke had me OMFG 🤣. Also, does that mean Kingdom would be place in between War and the original?
Great review
Damn. Got yourself a sub good sir.
This could be true, but there is still a bit of plot holes if combined together. Such as the astronauts lost in Space in Rise. This crew was going to Mars and at a different year than the original astronauts. But still your timeline looks really interesting and could be the case.
And Kingdom is supposed to come right after War... THEN the OG Apes movies just like you said. THANK you for this. :D Now, there IS a comic series that takes place right after Tim Burton's retelling. I DID like that movie but fail to see how it would fit in this WHOLE time line we both agree to. So, while the time line that I discovered, and was further validated by you and this video, lines up completely, I put Tim Burton's Ape movie right after that and call it a "sort of retelling" because we ARE talking about time travel and all that.
Just use the multiverse effect.
Original 5 is one.
2001 is another
And the current films are another.
Really isn’t that difficult as it’s impossible to link them all together and is the only way to make sense.
Great Analysis and I totally agree
4:12 also, he would come to the conclusion that humans nuked everything due the fact that the Cold War was happening wen he was sent into space. 🤷🏽♂️
Well done!
I’ve never watched these movies but I’m going to do it. I’m going to do it according to your theory. Seems like it’ll be fun!
Holy cow! I didn't know the timeline was this confusing! I do eventually wanna go back and watch the previous movies in the franchise. Glad I stumbled across this video randomly!
Thanks for commenting, and, yeah, the timeline is ridiculous. It's a lot of fun watching these movies all together though. So many fun nuggets to spot.
Escape was the first one i seen when i was home sick from school. I dont know i was channel surfing (God to i miss finding things that way) and it caught my eye immediately and i remember being in shock at that ending but also being grateful that atleast Caesar was ok.
During the first film in the reboot, the director himself said that it wasn’t apart of the original pentalogy but something of its own wit similarities to the original. The original has already told an entire story and even loops bak on itself in the fourth film to tie the entire story line together and is completed wit the final film. However, I see a lot of videos that try to tie the reboot to the original films.
It's all FANTASY...FANTASY....BUT WHAT A GRAND OLD TIME IVE HAD HAVING MY IMAGINATION HELD SWEETLY HOSTAGE...I LOVE THE CURRENT FILMS...HAD PLENTY OF EMOTIONS COME UP AT THE END OF WAR...WITH CEASAR BEING KILLED OFF...
i really liked the 2001 planet of the apes movie, I was entertained pretty much throughout the whole movie.
No don't connect to the originals please
I dont think the new planet of the apes movie starting with rise are connected to the original 5 movies. Its a reimagining/rebooted version.
Your opinion that the directors are wrong in calling *their* movies a reboot isn't really an opinion, it's just an objectively wrong statement. If the creators state a work is a reboot, that's the end of the argument. The details you say connected the movies to the others are just call backs to the other films as youd expect a reboot to do. That's all.
Imo once the work of the author/director/actor or artist in general is released to the world, the consumer or viewer or general public are able to take interpretations that may be different from what the artist believes is being displayed. When you look at a pretty picture, your feelings may evoke something different than what the person next to you feels or what the artist felt when making the piece. And in regards to writing/dialogue, writers often put in themes subconsciously that they may not even know that they are putting in, e.g some of the fascist themes of the movie Idiocracy has without trying to be a fascist movie (just one example of pretty much every book or movie having this, look some of the interpretations for the 1930s King Kong up as another). Just because the director sees this as a reboot doesn't quite have enough to say that it's completely a reboot, in fact its more than plausible that this timeline could exist. Is that necessarily what I want for the franchise? Not entirely; the only 3 I'd want in continuity from the og series would be the 68 Planet of the Apes, Escape From the Planet of the Apes and MAYBE Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Still, there's enough there to read the work that way as a Time Paradox especially due to this series consistent use of time travel. We shouldn't be worshipping the artist but the art as it stands.
@zachpassey4196 that's all fine and dandy, but you can't really argue that art means something when the artist said it meant something else.
@@dr.curtisconnors3914 you very much can if it's there in the material, again with or without the artists intent that's the whole point of interpretation
@zachpassey4196 yes, I get that but this is not such a case. A film was stated to not have a shared continuity with another. you can't just claim something connects to another, and then try to argue statements that contradict that from artists.
@@zachpassey4196 it's not interpretation if you are blatantly trying to connect continuity that does not connect at all.
My personal belief is that the rise franchise ties perfectly into the first movie but the connection ends there, it just gets too muddied at below the planet of the apes and all the ones past that
It really needs to be pointed out that at the time when the original movie was made the possibility of destruction by nuclear war was in the back of everyone's mind. Nuclear destruction was a pervasive cloud than hovered over everything we did. We were actively in denial while going about our daily business. As a child growing up in the '60s and '70s I had to learn duck and cover drills in school while also thinking of their ultimate futility. I was an avid reader of science fiction, and had a good layman's knowledge of science. The idea that life would be worth living after a nuclear war between the superpowers, followed by any retaliatory strikes that might have been prepared against the contingency of the various countries being essentially destroyed, made any thought of survival ridiculous. And so, the scene in which the Statue of Liberty is revealed naturally and universally evoked the idea that humanity had destroyed itself in a fit of nuclear war. There really was no other thought in anyone's mind back then.
Roddy McDowell in every movie. What an Easter egg
So do you think -- time line wise -- that Kingdom will be a sequel to Battle... or will it be a continuation of the original unaltered timeline that will end with Beneath?
It takes place centuries after Caesar’s death
“Holy Toledo Ohio” is such a deep cut. I tried to find the movie is it called “the electric maid” or something like that?
there is no connecting the movies!
i think you could fit them together except for the tim burton one
It actually does end in Nuclear war in Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes because the humans are shown that they have military stuff so they do fight back but loose but it results in all humans left dying in the war
Even though Cornelius and Zira start the new timeline, the story of Aldo being the first talking ape is from before they created the new timeline and thus according to your timeline, part of the timeline that starts with RIse, which presents Caesar as the first talking ape. that is a contradiction that would require further explanation if we want it to be the answer.
Zira won’t be born until a long time after kingdom
OMFG, have so many people really lost the understanding of "remakes'?! I suppose some clowns must think that Thade's father in the Burton film was Taylor who had somehow reincarnated as an ape, just because of Charlton
Heston's cameo!
In the current reboot movies, older fans like me recognized various nods to the originals as nostalgic homages, but they were clearly not meant to imply any sort of continuity to them, in any direction of time. What would've been the point of merely re-telling the same story and sequence as in the original films?
Remakes usually try to update a certain aspect in order to make it a fresher rendition of the material it's based upon. "Scarface" (1983) is a remake of the 1932 film. Simple as that. Not surprisingly, many people didn't even know that the Pacino version was a remake, since there's half a century between them.
I hope this over-speculation of the POTA franchise is all just being done for laughs, but too many people in the comments seem to be taking this too seriously!
Why stop here, then?! Why not just try to connect the 1936 "King Kong" with the remake from the '70's and the Peter Jackson version?! And then connect the cartoon version of "the Lion King" with the CGI remake. Oh, better still, have fun trying to connect the original Batman series to the Burton movies, the Nolan movies, and every other Batman-related movie ever made.
I think this is a good optional way to watch the movies. However I really doubt the new movies are prequels. If rise started to be a prequel then the other movies retconned it. I don’t think the creators even know yet. They could either remake the OV planet of the apes after awhile as part of the reboot series or get it to the point to connect it to the original movie.
Old is gold first 2 part
I just saw Kingdom. I really liked it and am curious to see how this new trilogy will shape out......
Possible Spoilers
From what others have said, Kingdom is 300 years after War, and possibly close to 1- 2 thousand years before the events of the original. We see the 'feral' humans are similar to the original planet of the apes but there doesn't appear to be abundance of them, but it is implied at the end of kingdom that there are a surprising number of non feral humans still around and still capable of using human technology. I feel this trilogy, like the others, will explore the conflict that will inevitably arise with the Apes continuing to advance and the remaining intelligent humans being unable to accept that there is no way to 'reclaim' their world. The first trilogy did a good job of adding just enough nuance and twists to what would initially may come across as typical stories to make them interesting and I get the feeling after Kingdom that this trend will likely continue.
Nice overview....but how about kingdom of the planet of the apes??
Kingdom takes it further in that there's remaining humans determined to take back the earth so does this lead to the nuclear war, the mutants and the desolation found in the first film from 68.......?
I was always wondering how the apes are also much larger than in real life?
But how would kingdom of the planet of the apes connect to this timeline?
I don’t think the modern prequel movies r connected to the original movies
You didn't explained that 2300 thing. In Escape it's said that apes evolved and rebeled in year 2300.
I loved the 1974 TV series!
I'd like to see an actual adaptation of the novel.
You thought he Star Wars lore was complicated PFFFF look at this
Escape isn’t a prequel. That’s like saying back to the future part 3 is a prequel.
Is this the film theory guy with another name?
Armando didn’t rename Milo to Caesar Caesar named himself
“HOLY TOLEDO OHIO”
As a wise man, once said: OOH!
Armando didn't name him Caeser he chose the name
I think they are gonna remake the originals as sequels, but a movie about futuristic hyper-intelligent apes living in a wasteland isnt too comercially atractive nowadays
kingdom hints at another war with the apes and nukes may be involved.
My Connection of All Movies:
Rise - The beginning of the timeline
Dawn - Why Humans are dying
War - Why humans are Dying losing Intelligence
Kingdom - 300 years later
Og - Charleton Heston
Beneath - Death buuuuut
Escape - Timeline reboot
Conquest - Rebellion 2.0
Battle - Finally a good ending! oh no
Mark Wahlburg - Humans and Apes again fall into w classes Tim Roth time travels back changes history a 3rd time and fuuu
Here’s the issue with saying humanity didn’t take themselves out with nukes, what the hell are the humans who mutated thanks to radiation. Like Battle shows that humans were on that path when they spent enough time near radiation, and it’s clear that this timeline was greatly accelerated. So it’s safe to assume if radiation caused this evolution in one timeline, and we have no clue what caused it in another, then the simplest answer would be saying radiation caused it as well.
Like sure the guy who gives the info is a known liar, but the series never gives you a reason to doubt that idea. In fact it actually gives more evidence to support him than to disprove him.
2:14 Just say, "TIME TRIPPING"! It's so much simpler.
I grew up with reboot trilogy era
Same here
the new movies don’t connect at all, two different (well 3 different timelines) this was entertaining but there’s no equation
How old are you ? You made it out to be more complicated that what it actually was 😂 I figured the movie out when I was in HS
Good try, a far shot better than most try's lol
Rise, dawn, war, kingdom are first. And so far the 1968 movie is next at the moment. After that I never bothered to watch the others. The 68 movie was perfect.
Go watch them, as they include some rather important details. I grew up on those 5 movies in the 70s, and have watched them literally hundreds of times each. I want to finish watching this video before I make what I'm sure will be a rather long winded comment (I know how I get when I'm discussing something I really enjoy, and have studied since I was a small child).
You ARE correct in something, though.... Rise - War (and likely Kingdom (can't comment as I haven't seen where it fits) could very well be the "original" timeline, with the original films being a second/third timeline created by certain events. Like I said, you should watch the original 4 sequels, and do so "intently", as there are a lot of subtle details that can be linked together.
I know that the budget for each successive (and successful) movie was cut, and how that affected the visual quality of the movies.... but try to put that aside, and watch the stories as they unfold. Once you've done that, hit me up and I'll be happy to tell you all of the links I made with them.
Where does kingdom take place now 😭
Wouldn’t humans eventually learn how to speak again?
Wow! 1972 movie Milo renamed himself Ceasar. Re-watch the movie. It was very ahead of its times. Get into the acting, see the imagination not the CGI.
9:19 they didn’t thru the same time warp. The detonation of the bomb is wat caused them to go bak in time.
To be fair the new series of movies very well could end up having nukes. In kingdom we learn there is still human technology locked away and that there are still groups of intelligent humans. Humans launching a nuke is still a very possible event in future movies.
What if the reboot is the actual original timeline where Caesar was the original one who said no but years after his death. The new leader of the apes a ape called Aldo force the apes to change history to make him the one who really said no and that Cornelius and Zira if I spell Caesar mom name right only told the false history of what Aldo said was true and the virus was the one that supposedly killed cat and dogs was actually the viris that nearly killed the humans. You see they as in Disney, can say that this reboot is the real original timeline that is destroyed by one human. With the new time where another Caesar leads somehow get what the original Caesar wanted apes and humans to coexist. And they can then show a world where apes and humans live side by side in peace and harmony. Just saying a wild crazy theory and idea for Disney lol.
Did you even watch the movies?? They confirmed that it was a nuclear holocaust in the original 5th movie.
I would include the live action TV show, but skip the cartoon
I know you said you gonna be ignoring TV shows, comic books and stuff - But this is literally being delusional. "Death of the Planet of the Apes" is a novel that takes place during Beneath the Planet of the Apes from Zira and Cornelius perspective. They learn from Dr Zaius about the ape rebellion, specifically about Aldo's "No". Which they also mention in the court scene of "Escape From TPOFA".
Obviously it's worth noting that the novel was released in 2018, but it's still canon.
Ah, screw you all. I liked the Burton Ape movie a lot.
“How to connect ALL of the Planet of the apes movies” immediately ignores the Tim burton movie because it’s not remembered as fondly as some others.
Wow great work
Makes video called "Connecting ALL Planet of the Apes films"
Purposefully leaves one out
I know people hate the movie, but i just ignoring it like everybody else feels lazy. Even if its a stretch i would have preferred to see you try and stick it in somewhere. Because if you dont, its not "all" the movies, its just the ones you like
