What Captain Sobo in the band of brothers is an example to that. This is military, it is not exactly a ground for democracy, he can be judged as harsh or easygoing at most but as a superior officer, he is not to debate with his inferiors while making decisions. And Darth Sidious should be used instead of Darth Vader as well.
Technically authoritarian means non-pluralistic. Which basically means a society that does not have multiple centers of power. Our society doesn’t have multiple centers of power simultaneously - we take turns. Most people mean autocratic when they say authoritarian. And autocratic is when there is no difference between the law and the opinion of the ruler/s.
Interesting points. When it comes to the research on leadership *_styles_* specifically, autocratic and authoritarian are treated as virtual synonyms. The research that this came from looked at supervisors, school teachers, and other types of leaders of teams and organizations. Much of the research was done in experimental settings. In other words, these terms within leadership studies have a more local meaning that doesn't always connect with the way historians might use the terms to describe how societies are run or ruled.

This style needs to be renamed to something with less negative connotations. It's not like we call laissez-faire leadership style as anarchical leadership style (although we probably should). I say rename autocratic leadership style to something like top-down leadership style. PS - I consider myself democratic leadership style but I would much prefer an autocratic leader any day over the dreaded laissez-faire one. At least the autocratic leader is doing their job and earning their higher pay even if I don't agree with their method. Unlike the laissez-faire ones of whom I don't know what they do all day. As a democratic style when I seek input horizontally from a laissez-faire, I get nothing but a blank face glowing with a lack of knowledge/technical expertise and get more value from one of their team members who get paid less and do more
What’s often times misunderstood of the laissez-fairs is that they don’t do anything. It takes immense, and higher level skill to properly gauge when the “right” time come as opposed to constant hovering-especially for high competent workers.
Different personalities thrive or wither under different management styles. I personally thrive under laissez-faire management as I'm highly skilled and competent. I prefer a manager that gives me a goal and allows me to achieve that goal using my skills. A manager that hovers, micro-manages and undermines would make me leave an organisation in a heart beat. The autocratic style does have it's place but it's better used for inexperienced workers that need more direction and oversight and should be eased off as the worker gains skill, experience and knowledge.

I think all good leaders will evaluate themselves to identify what leadership style works best for them.
