probably the first and one of the very few video games based on comics where you can tell the dev team were actually fans. including characters like cloak and dagger, iron fist, demogoblin, etc. And the whole tone between the music and tone just fits what mid-90s comic culture felt like
i really love this game, not for the usual soundtrack, bosses and difficulty, but it was really one of the first games to show a really expanded universe, ie, dopple ganger, cloak and dagger, demogoblin, etc
+Matthew Ertle What I did was if you got as far as prospect park was collect all the icons and get the continue icon, die and repeat till I had enough to spam the bosses and against the final boss just keep changing between characters for a few frames of invincile as long as you time it so you land right in front of Carange. The sequel sucks though.
This game is deep. You are constantly trying to avoid being surrounded. You can toss an enemy at another enemy to create space. But if you are fighting 3 men in front and you have no time to react to a guy coming behind you, you can do a dash attack to get away and knock back the 3 men in front. Venom's strength makes him powerful to use against bosses, but his overall speed makes him harder to fight crowds. Once it's down to 1 or 2 men or you have time before getting surrounded again, you can use your most powerful combos to quickly eliminate enemies.
The roll credits scene was so funny. I was playing as Venom, and when he said "Carnage was OURS - and you stole him from us!", I was just thinking "What? But didn't I just beat him? How is this the end?" Nice bait-and-switch.
Also, he says it because in the original comics this game was based on, Venom was too weakened from escaping Carnage (which was when he tricked Carnage into shooting the symbiote at him with the sonic gun) and so didn't appear to help Spider-Man and the others defeat Carnage and his minions in the streets. After that battle, Carnage was presumed dead, and Venom only healed up enough to fight _after_ that all happened, and so confronted Spider-Man by the lake since he wanted to be the one who took Carnage down. The game, though, lets you play as either Spider-Man or Venom for that pre-credits boss fight, when really Venom wasn't there and it was up to Spider-Man and his allies (Cloak & Dagger, Iron Fist, Captain America, Firestar) to beat them, so anyone who chose to play as Venom for that fight will be confused since Venom canonically wasn't present for that battle and only reappeared in the story by the lake afterwards.
Am I the only one who remembers using the double web sling smash to do a double KO on enemies when they were perfectly lined up on opposite sides of you in this game? I remember using this move to make quick work of the first two bosses and tried to pull it off as much as I could. It was my favorite move!
Don't forget the Spin Throw. I love it - grab a enemie, rise them above Spidy\Venom head, and mash the absolute shit of B and A buttons. But not press them together - alternate. Baddy start spinning as fast as you mash'em :D
I really can't wait for the day they finally put Carnage in an actual Spider-Man movie. If only they could make it an R rated movie though, to show how sick and psychotic he really is.
Yeah. But mostly it's his host Cletus Kasady that makes him even worse than Venom (and Eddie Brock). Wikipedia describes Cletus' insanity and his past. It's pretty fucked up. He murdered his grandmother when he was 8. But that's not even the worst thing he did. Read the Wikipedia file on him, man.
This game should have been named "maximum callus". I grinded my thumbs so hard on this game truly a classic! I made it to the end so many times. I feel better that I didn't miss anymore then the end credits and you gave me that thank you!
I loved this game as a kid. The intro cutscene along the music with Carnage coming out of that dudes body gave me nightmares as a kid!! For an LJN game it was actually pretty good. It gets harder as you go along. The key is to not let too many enemies surround you which was really hard to do. That intro cut scene / music though to this day made it really hard to forget this game!!!
***** if you double web attack (the one where you pull them in and knock their heads together) the sub bosses (when there are two) as your first attack it will one hit kill them and give you an extra life. That's how I beat this game back on the SNES. Hard as fuck though.
I remember beating this game knowing every patterns the enemy makes and all the secret rooms found in this video. They're 4 spots he missed, but it's no biggie just lives, hearts and a spiderman support. All you need is enough lives to beat Carnage in the End. Back then there was no internet and youtube to guide me so i had to repeat every level to explore each stages over and over again cause this game was difficult without those extra 9 lives.
I had the same experience. I remember playing this with the feeling that I would never beat it. The fact that losing all your lives/continues meant having to restart the whole game was a real killer. But I kept at it. I found more and more secrets and got better and better strategies and skill. I might have had this game for years before I eventually beat it.
Yeah, I never beat this game. But then again I never knew there were secret rooms and all the extra items hidden everywhere. May have made a difference
I never knew about them either, and still beat it as a kid. Honestly it's not that hard, it's just about knowing how to spam the right moves which protects you from getting damaged. I was kind of surprised by this playthru, it was much better in the beginning than I was, but struggling mightily at the end. The hero buddy barrage on the final level before the 1v1 carnage fights is important. But I didn't have anywhere near the heroes saved up this player had. The final carnage fights are not that hard once you know how to jump kick him properly, and walk behind his cyclone attacks
Makes sense, though; in the original comics, Venom has shown _WAY_ higher strength than just lifting dumpsters. In the comics, Venom has yeeted military tanks (50+ tons), held up ferris wheels (220 tons), and even threw hands with Juggernaut who is Hulk-tier (and we all know how strong _that_ tier is). Filled up dumpsters are easy weights for him, like a kid's backpack to an irl bodybuilder.

You know, if you smack bosses into one another, especially the first stage bosses, by using your webbing to smack them into one another when they are on the same level of either side of you, then you can get another 1UP for your character.
There are actually a couple of LJN games that are decent. The ones I know off the top of my head are Maximum Carnage, True Lies, Alien 3 and despite it's initial appearance Friday the 13th is actually a decent game once you learn how Jason works and figure out a few of the powerup locations. One more oddball, is Warlock for Snes. These are the only LJN games that are part of my personal collection. Warlock I picked up solely due to a friend saying she played it as a kid and that it was alright.

I remember being a slightly-older teenager playing this game when my parent's weren't home and laughing my ass off at how the regular enemies had such run-of-the-mill names. "Yeah, fuck you, STEVE!" "Hey, Malcom! Eat some Alex, BITCH!" as I throw an enemy into another enemy. Good times.
I had to play this on an old fashioned tv with a dial instead of buttons. Something was wrong with how it interacted with the Sega system, and the screen was perpetually bouncing. To see it like this almost feels weird.
Spiderman: Every villain who I beat seems to always come back Billy and Mike: Literally coming back to fight again one minute after Spiderman beat them up
The Nerd: (Sighs) All right, one more game, and then it's Happy Holidays and good fucking night. Let's end with Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage on Super Nintendo. Everyone says I should play this one, as if I haven't already played enough Spider-Man games! They're all terrible! But maybe this one's okay. After all, I'm not sure how I missed it, because it's one of the only Super NES games that's red. Anyway, let's give it a try. The Nerd: Well, the comic book cut-scenes are quite nice. The game-play? Well, it's a beat-'em-up game. Monotonous, but fun. The controls are responsive, and the hit detection works fine. The sound effects are good, the punches and grunts you hear all lend themselves to the fun, stress-relieving nature of these kind of games. It just feels good when you hit things. You can climb up on buildings, which offers some variety and breaks up the monotony. It can be a little frustrating, but not too bad. And the music is upbeat and energizing. The Nerd: And what do I hear? ("The Mob Rules" by Black Sabbath plays) It's The Mob Rules by Black Sabbath! I don't mean it just sounds similar, it's the same song! Just a 16-bit rendition. It even does the solo! (16-bit rendition of Black Sabbath's "The Mob Rules" solo plays) I think it was just a rip-off, and that they never got Black Sabbath's permission, but it's still welcome to hear and adds to this game's enjoy-ability. The Nerd: That's right. I found a good Spider-Man game. Better late than never. It's no masterpiece or anything like that, but it would have definitely been worth a rental at the very least. Who made this game? (The Nerd turns over the box, revealing that is was published by...LJN! The Nerd's eyes widen in shock, and he drops the box in happiness realizing that LJN pulled through and published a decent game for once!) ("Justified" by Mark Petrie from Partners in Rhyme plays.) The Nerd: (in shock and happiness) My God. Oh my God. THEY DID IT... THEY PULLED THROUGH! OH, MY GOD! THEY MADE A GAME... THAT'S NOT A STEAMING PILE OF FUCKING SHIT! OH, MY GOD! THEY DID IT! THEY MADE A GAME THAT'S NOT SHIT! (cries) I found gold at the end of the rainbow- Oh, maybe it's not gold, maybe it's bronze or something, but... THEY MADE A GAME THAT'S NOT SHIT! (yells) IT'S NOT SHIT!
that moment when carnage's life bar turns from green to red, always gave me hope. i played this game on my mega-drive ALOT when i was a kid but only managed to beat it once with sheer luck. the worst part wasn't his fight though, it was getting to him with enough lifes on you to endure the fight XD i remember just restarting way too many times because i didn't make it to him with enough extra lifes lol.

Good times.
one of the best side scrolling beat em ups ever
The most difficult thing about this game was that you had to beat all the bad dudes while headbanging at the same time
Very tough game and a great soundtrack, still never beat it to this day! Came here to see how it ended and I'm satisfied lol Thanks!
I love how the whole screen shakes when you jump as Venom.
im here for that damn bass in all the cutscenes been humming this since i was little
Forgot the statue of liberty secret level at 54:00
Truly the only LJN game that's actually good.
Remember never to watch videos in youtube with advertisment before.
When you see one, just go back and look for another video.
This game looks so simple yet so fun
Venom is better at taking out bosses because of his power. But Spiderman can fight crowds better due to his speed.
Great nostalgia!!
So the question is were there100 guys named "Mike" and "Danny" in the gang, or was it the same guy getting up to get his butt kicked again and again.
I had to play this on an old fashioned tv with a dial instead of buttons. Something was wrong with how it interacted with the Sega system, and the screen was perpetually bouncing. To see it like this almost feels weird.
One of the hardest video games I never finished. Great memories. Separation anxiety was way easier.
''climb'' is what brings this game down ...
Spiderman: Every villain who I beat seems to always come back
Billy and Mike: Literally coming back to fight again one minute after Spiderman beat them up
0:55 IT’S MORBIN TIME
When i was a kid, I thought this was the coolest shit on the planet. I was right!
Awesome game! Awesome soundtrack!Awesome everything!LOL👏😂😂
The Nerd's eyes widen in shock, and he drops the box in happiness realizing that LJN pulled through and published a decent game for once!)
("Justified" by Mark Petrie from Partners in Rhyme plays.)
The Nerd: (in shock and happiness) My God. (yells) IT'S NOT SHIT!
that moment when carnage's life bar turns from green to red, always gave me hope.
i played this game on my mega-drive ALOT when i was a kid but only managed to beat it once with sheer luck.
the worst part wasn't his fight though, it was getting to him with enough lifes on you to endure the fight XD
i remember just restarting way too many times because i didn't make it to him with enough extra lifes lol.
It’s when Spider Man and Venom call it a truce and partner up to take on Carnage.
I can always remember the song to the first stage.
They need a remake and remastered this classic 90's Marvel beat up game.
This was actually an Acclaim game, but sold under the LJN label.
I still can’t get over the fact of how carnage is sitting on that rock while everyone is fighting 😂
This game is amazing.
