Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of LJN's 1994 license-based beat 'em up game for the Super Nintendo, Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage.
When this first came out, I remember how good it looked in screenshots in all of the magazine reviews. Between the comic panel scenes and the game's character designs, it looked like it was dead-on with the source material. Add in Final Fight-type gameplay, branching paths, a soundtrack by Green Jelly (not that I cared much about GJ, but the music being done by a real band that I had heard of was really cool), and it all seemed like the recipe for a perfect game.
Does anyone else remember the bright red cartridge this came on? I loved that!
Of course it didn't live up to such an impossible expectation, but it was pretty excellent anyway. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Even now the graphics still look really good, and the music still suits it to a T (even if it is still fairly generic sounding rock). And have you ever noticed the (unauthorized) use of Black Sabbath's The Mob Rules?
The controls weren't quite a match for Final Fight or Streets of Rage 2, but you have quite a few more moves at your disposal because of your webbing: grab 2 guys and smash them together, swing over their heads, create a makeshift shield - all are possible with the right finger gymnastics. You also get to call in other superheroes to help you out, which I always thought was super-cool. It doesn't control particularly well, but it's not too frustrating once you get the hang of it.
I tried to hit all of the secret rooms on the path I took, but man, they really didn't make it easy to access them, even if you knew where they are!
So is Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage worth a play? Damn right it is!

LJN's best game
Easily the sharpest kid on that short bus.
That's not saying much
they never made this game they just publish this game
Acclaim also published the game alongside LJN.
Their only good game.
One of my favorite games of all time. I never beat it BUT the music, the gameplay, and the storyline was 🔥🔥🔥
It was all about he boss double smash. Once you figured that out the game was repeat-a-beatable.
Never beat it myself. You're not alone.
I went back and beat it as a 27 year old I had too
If they had passwords I maybe could’ve beaten it. Having to always go back to the beginning frustrated me to the point to where I lost interest in it as a kid. Still a great game I just got tired of always having to go back to the beginning after progressing.
Man loved this game but it was so hard and yes going back to the beginning just demotivated me to finish.
One of LJNs best games. Possibly the best they ever published.
Alien 3 - a nice Game - is also published by LJN!
The only decent game by LJN
@@Slym_Slayer No, their WWF games were also fairly decent as well.
Jaws nes is okay but it's more of nostalgia next door neighbor's Friday night sleepovers trying to beat it till one night we did it
But I totally agree this game is one of laughing joking numbnuts best game

Maximum Carnage was a surprisingly good beat 'em up that played well and even now still looks great. If you're a fan of Spidey or beat 'em ups, this is a must play!
Well played. You knew enough to get by. Are you aware of the punch exploit? If you tap up or down you reset your attack string. Lots of random secrets in this game, lots forgotten. Thank you for playing through as Spider-Man.
im a fan of venom sooooooo (:)
was this ported to snes from genesis or vis versa, i played the sega version didnt realize it was on snes too?
@@SiTnSiDwAyZ It was released on both at the same time.
There s a lot of these beat em ups that still hold up. Streets of Rage 2, Spiderman( the one proceeding Maximum Carnage) X Men Arcade , TMNT 2 3 and In Time, Avengers, etc.
one of my favorite parts about this game is that it's pretty much Streets of rage but with some Spider-Man characters and Cloak and Dagger. Maximum Carnage is truly one of the best beat em up games and even SNES games.
Thought the same thing
The rock and roll music in this game is sick.
Its essentially black sabbath. If your a fan then it probably sounds familiar. This game stole alot of their songs without paying royalties. Banging soundtrack for sure.
so even back then, marvel had been doing post credit scenes
Don't forget this game had a red cartridge.
When I was a kid, I always thought it was so cool to play as Venom in this game.
On the other hand, I also thought to myself "Isn't Venom one of the bad guys--technically?...".
Well, venom is a protagonist in the game because he and carnage are enemies.
Venom hates Carnage. Because Carnage is a “bad guy” who murders innocent people. In fact Carnage was the villain in the Venom sequel
During the time of this incredibly insane, 90's infused mayhem of crossovers, Venom was an Anti-Hero and became the Lethal Protector, after defeating Carnage with Spidey and both him with Spidey formed an uneasy truce to operate in their own areas, without interference from each other. As you guess it, it didn't last! X)

That story will forever be non canon to me
I literally had no idea you could defeat Doppelganger like how you see at 8:33-8:38 when I was a kid.
Same! Nor did I know about the secret room right at the start of the climb portion just before this.
I rented this from Blockbuster like four times before my parents finally bought it for me.
Used to rent this a lot back in the 90's.Compared to others games that Ljn and Acclaim made this Maximum Carnage is a masterpiece especially when it comes to controls. They used to program hard rock gameplay even Fred Flintstone would complain about!!!LOL
Misconception, LJN and Acclaim never made a game at all, everything under their umbrella were just published by them, always made by an outside software company, a different one for many of the games that bear their logo.
Most of their games ranged from mediocre to just awful, but with Maximum Carnage LJN managed to make a game that was actually pretty awesome! A beat-em-up where you can play as Spider-Man and Venom, and have access to their super powers with a pretty rocking soundtrack!
LJN never made a game in their existence, they only existed as a publisher, and another arm of Acclaim, who was also just a publisher.
I loved this game when I was a baby.
OMG I freaking loved this game when I was 12 years old!!! I ever remember that intro music!!!!
0:51 I loved that moment in Spider-Man where he said “Pizza time” and pizza’d all over the screen.
I just pizza'd in my pants bro
Had this game as a kid, so many great memories.
One of the best comic book adaptations of its time. Killer soundtrack, it keeps the bright colors and onomatopoeia sound effects and is just a solid beat-em-up. Only downside is it lacks a two player mode!
i still have the original red cart , i thought it looked so cool when i was a kid
Same
That was cool, seeing the stages that I could never get to as a kid
Original Venom line-"But we've come back to make sure that this time, you DIIIEEE!!"
I used to play this game and then watch the Simpsons show in the 90s. Good times 😂
I can never beat this game alone but can on Separation Anxiety. Both fun nostalgic games.
Separation Anxiety was way easier than this. Carnage was a cheap bastard. They nerfed him in the sequel.
That fight against the bald thugs at the end of the alleway stage, where Cloak and the blonde girl saves your ass... Oh how I tried to beat them all every time I was playing. This one time I would have succeeded, but when the last four of them come at you, you can only beat three of them, and the last one cant't be beaten because he won't lose his health after he is one punch away from defeat
I beat the four guys at once and maaaan I only did it one time. On the Sega Genesis version it's way tougher.
Her name is Dagger.
En realidad esos cuatro tipos si se pueden derrotar, solo que uno tiene una vida exagerada, pero si eres paciente puedes derrotarlo, aunque el final es el mismo

It's an excellent spider-man game and rockin soundtrack. 😀👍🎮
Underrated gem.
Got this game for my 8th birthday in Jan 1995 , never was able to beat it but I loved this game
I like how this game made use of the C list superheroes lol. One of my favorites
I wanted you to play as VENOM! This is his first Video Game apperence.
LJN actually made a good game? I must be having a stroke.
Ueno54 yeah but after this ljn bankrupt
LJN was just a publisher. The games were actually made by a variety of companies they commissioned. It's just that they kept unknowingly choosing bad ones.
They also published True Lies, which was a surprisingly good movie tie-in game.
R/Ihadastroke
I love the soundtrack to this game!
Now that SOR4 is successful & TMNT Shredder's Revenge is upon us. DOTEMU. Needs to make A true Maximum Carnage Sequel. Any one else agree?
I do
Dude, when I played this game, for me it is one of the most difficult games I have played, you completely dominated the final fight, it took me like an hour to beat that idiot. (I was using Save state)
the fact that the follin brothers will not compose the music for this game ):
his last composition on the SNES was in Motor x (canceled SNES game)
sad that they abandoned software creations
Maximum Carnage.
It's one of my favourite games of all time and it's my favourite Spider Man of all time.
In fact, I love it so much that I've come up with all sorts of different versions of it.
There's Maximum Carnage which is of course the classic original version.
There's also The Incredibles Maximum Carnage which is basically Maximum Carnage but with The Incredibles.
Also there's Jewel Riders Maximum Carnage which is Maximum Carnage but with The Jewel Riders.
Then we have The Musketeers Maximum Carnage which is, you guessed it, Maximum Carnage but with The Musketeers, including Albert The 5th Musketeer.
And many more.
A classic. Was so hard. This guy made it look easy
Carnage and shriek on a killing spree M-A-S-S-A-C-R-E
I was never able to see anyone complete this as a kid. It always felt too difficult for me and my brothers.
Separation Anxiety seemed a bit easier but in terms of overall quality it felt like a downgrade, especially in the graphics.
This is true. You can find and get more extra lives as Spider-Man in comparison to Venom in Separation Anxiety. Venom is the tougher challenge to beat Separation Anxiety with.
Did good in school, Moms bought me the red cartridge for Genesis! I loved this game. Awesome stuff
We need a remake on this game
ironically this was one of the few games that LJN actually made that was good
1:36 The Birth of Carnage
It had a fake out ending? Kinda unheard of back then.
Intro scared the HECK out of me when I was a little kid, I had to watch from under the covers while my older brother played 😂
The second deathlok popped on screen I lost my fricken mind because I was so hyped to see my favorite character in a videogame
8:28 If you listen to fools, The Mob Rules!
LJN actually made a game that's not shit! IT'S NOT SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!
Loved this game
I used to play this with my cousin. I always find it amusing with the Iron Fist entrance song is from Enter the Dragon.
Also I remember this was based on the amazing (pun unintended) Spiderman cartoon from the 90's :D
Actually, this game is a straight-up adaptation of one of the longer and more heavily involved comic book story arcs from Marvel Comics in the 90’s, literally titled “Maximum Carnage”. I don’t think that there’s any other game like this in that regard, having a video game be a straight-up adaptation of a comic book story arc.
@@johnpike7141 I always thought it was sort of a cash in on that truly great cartoon.
@@johnpike7141There was also The Death and Return of Superman on the SNES, also based on the comic storyline.
Let there be carnage
This game, Spider Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage, based on the 1993 comic book story arc of the same name, features numerous heroes, including Spider-Man, Venom, and their allies from the Marvel Comics fictional universe like Captain America, Black Cat, Iron Fist, Cloak and Dagger, Deathlok, Morbius and Firestar, all teaming up to battle an onslaught of villains led by Carnage, including Shriek, Doppelganger, Demogoblin and Carrion. This single-player side-scrolling beat 'em up (with a format similar to Technos' Double Dragon and Capcom's Final Fight), the player controls Spider-Man and Venom through various levels to stop the supervillain Carnage and his team, as well as hundreds of criminals they inspire in their wake, from taking over the city. The two 16-bit versions are virtually identical. The first print of the game for the Super NES were sold in red-colored cartridge. Later prints came in standard-colored cartridge. It was followed up by a sequel titled Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety. Maximum Carnage is one of the first video games to be directly based on a comic book story, rather than simply using comics characters in a standard video game "action/adventure" plot. Many of the game's cutscenes feature semi-animated versions of art taken directly from the comics. It was also the first Spider-Man video game to receive a teen rating (while the SNES re-release version had a rating of K-A, the Genesis version was rated MA-13).
Insane mastery of the controls lol
Ok, the soundtrack for Prospect Park is straight up Mob Rules from Black Sabbath
At the time, this was the first objectively fun Spider-Man console game since Spider-Man on Atari.
Great game
42:24.; 69%?!...
Great times...
i love this game
Doppelganger really creeps me out
Doppelganger always scared the hell outta me haha.
Loved the music tho, inspired me to make my own punk band. If you see this comment, my first song releases everywhere April 5th! It's called "Nintendo Innuendo" by Junkyard Kingdom ✊️
Friggin brilliant game
This game is the reason I never bashed LJN like some other people loved to do. It was one of my first experiences with the company and it was amazing.
I don't think I ever beat this game man. Always got to the rooftop where you're fighting shriek and carnage and a few of the other goons and died
That Green Jello soundtrack...
my favorite super nintendo spider-man game
You're a friggin beast!
48:57 "On your left" (Throws shield) "I can do this, all day" - CAPTAIN AMERICA
How do you pull off the move that you see Spider-Man perform at 6:26-6:33, again?...
I haven't played this game in so long.
you do the web grab move when there's people on both sides.
How on Earth did you do the Double Smash?
the donkey kong jape at the end makes me smile
My fave snes game. So ashamed I didn’t know about the secret room and water tower trick
Why yes Mam I would love to see a full play through of Maximum Carnage with only Venom
15:55
The fuck? Who the fuck does that?
How come Cloak's head & the #2 is in the center of the screen, again at 16:37?...
I haven't played this game in so long, I literally don't remember.
He picked UP from above
Felicidades eres profesional.
why didnt you use venom?
I know right? I was him every chance I got!
Cause he is gay
Becouse that level with Venom sucks.
@N P he knows about the symbrock ships lol
I feel bad. I don't know who Carrion and Shriek are.

I could never tell what Cloak was screaming at 15:03-15:10 when I was a kid.
What's he saying?...
“Tandy”, it’s Dagger’s real name
Should be called Spiderman beats kids and young women.Carnage is the good guy in this one.
LOL !
Oh yeah young kids those goons in coats look like 20 year olds on top of that Spidey is defending himself
The Main titles music of this game being Carnage Rules by Green Jellÿ ( a great comedy metal band that Danny Carey of Tool was the longtime drummer for.) Great song too. Old School Crossover Thrash Like Suicidal Tendencies.
I never played this as a kid so.... I missed on that one but only Marvel game I played was "Spider & X-Men Arcade's Revenge" and "X-Men Mutant Apocalypse" that's all... I didn't know this game is way better than those games I played one cool thing I love is that it has... "Mob Rules" by Black Sabbath
I always preferred this version over the Genesis version because I felt the music sounded much better on the SNES on this game.
Cool LJN game!
I literally had no idea you could get Spider-Man to take out his shield when I was a kid.
How do you get Spider-Man to reveal his shield at 7:29-7:31, again?...
I haven't played this game in so long.

Seperation anxiety was cool too
Venom 2 post credit scene hints a Maximum Carnage movie. Make it happen Marvel.
Had this game it was red
Nice
marvel studios needs to make this into a movie
seeing the friendly neighbourhood spiderman throw hads with everyone he crosses on the streets is kinda funny but still this game looks great.
Spiderman and venom unity !!!!! ☆☆☆☆☆☆
Go get him spider-man
How come some of Spider-Man's health went down at 13:39-13:43?...
When you do the special move it takes health away.
Surely spiderman knows how to treat ladies
